“A Brilliant Hotel”
Reviewed March 15, 2014 via mobile

Please do not believe the bad or indifferent reviews about this hotel. We are still there and despite the bad weather at the moment we are having a brilliant time. The hotel at the moment is having a lot of work done and eventually be back to its former glory, don't get me wrong its fine but will
be even better. The room service is excellent, the management are so helpful and are first rate. The food is brilliant, worthy of a much higher rated hotel and the waiters are great. The bar and bar staff are excellent and cannot be faulted in any way.The animation team are the final link in the chain making your stay at this wonderful place complete.Buddy, Lucky, Medu and the boys are a fantastic asset to the place, not forgetting mimmi, the latest female addition to the group. They are brilliant and always good for a laugh. We ventured outside hundreds of times, day and night and never once experienced any trouble whatsoever.Several people are a little worried about the haggling in the shops,I myself love it and have spent ages haggling the price of a watch or a t shirt. The Tunisian way is to start high and get as much as possible, its their living after all. They don't hold a grudge if you don't buy and you will walk away friends. If you don't like to haggle there are quite a few fixed price shops where you get no hassle at all, and prices are only a bit higher than a good haggled price.

We arrived here, mid Jan, the sun was shinning and we where quite excited we discovered the pool was empty of water, and where given on other explanation other than it was 'cold', reception area was dark and dingy, and the rooms where very tired looking. The food was ok, but very repetitive, and when I asked if I could sit on the terrace with my lunch because the sun was shinning I was told 'no' not given any explanation, just 'no'. All in all not a pleasant experience, the friends we made, made it enjoyable needless to say after only 3nights there we were finally transferred to another hotel that was more inviting and comfortable. With regards to location, in the summer this resort would be amazing, in January it's dead as a dodo..... Which annoyed us as this holiday was sold to us a lively and up and coming cosmopolitan resort, and when I asked if it was a year round resort I was told that it most certainly was...... The transfer to another resort was the best move we made.

My wife and I have recently returned from a quick weeks break at the Chich Khan. Fifth time we have been there, last time was four years ago. It was lovely to see some of the staff again who as usual made us feel very welcome. These guys work hard to please, and succeed even when the weather is not at it's best. If you go in February be prepared for the out of season look throughout the town, it must be remembered that the season proper starts at Easter so the facilities can be a little rough round the edges. However take that on board, enjoy the local food and customs and a great time can be had..we travelled around this time as it's not really sunbathing weather in Feb, hired a driver and he took us wherever we wanted to go, best value indeed. Got to see the real Tunisia again and met some absolutely lovely people.
This country has gone through a rough patch recently and so is consequently striving to retain its tourist charms, this is evident by the hard work everyone does to please.
This hotel, previously under the Iberostar banner is now stepping out as an independent, same owners, just new ideals. Our fifth visit we found great improvements in most areas, especially the food which was really quite excellent this time. The hotel is undergoing an improvement regime all the time, most of the rooms are being re decorated and updated . I like this hotel , it has a Arabic feel to it, the colours are very Tunisian in flavour, yes it is old but still very presentable and spotlessly clean. Staff are cleaning the hotel constantly, this gives a good feel of care and attention. The staff are fantastic, bearing in mind how little these guys earn, they are friendly, willing and always attentive, some GB hotels could learn from this I feel.
We have personally known some staff members for many years, Sabre (barman) was only a young lad when we first met, now a confident young man who speaks many languages fluently, it was great to see him again and be remembered.
The animation team are real stars and work tirelessly to keep people entertained throughout the day and evening, not to everyone's taste but nevertheless great fun. The new team especially Badi (buddi) made our stay most enjoyable with tales of everyday life in Tunisia, which is not an easy time for some of them, we were made to feel very welcome and realised that these people are really pleased that we have made the trip to their country out of choice.
All in all it depends what you are looking for in a holiday really, this hotel is suited for families with children, it's very clean, it's safe and the food is good. A week by the pool in the summer soaking up the sun if that's your bag, brilliant stuff. Equally there is lots to see and do outside the Hotel, but remember this is an Arab country going through change, accept that and you will have a blast.
These people when you get to know them are some of the friendliest folks we have met on our travels round the world, for us you can't go too wrong with a quick break at the Chich Khan.

Room Tip: Choose a room overlooking the pool with a balcony, much nicer

My wife and I stayed at the Chic Khan for a week in late February 2014, unfortunately the weather wasn't too good so we had plenty of time inside the hotel.

The location of the hotel is quite good, it's just 200 yards or so from the Medina which is basically a newly built development of shops and restaurants where you can expect to be hassled until you make a hasty retreat back to your hotel!

Chic Khan isn't however on the beach road but it's only a 5 minute walk away, as is the Marina.

The Chic Khan appears to be one of the older hotels in Yasmine Hammamet, many of the the hotels facing the beach appear new and more modern.

What surprised me is how dark the hotel is, the main public areas and corridors are painted orange and it's very dark and gloomy even during the day.

The quality of the local drinks available on the all inclusive package were surprisingly good as was the food at meal times but it quickly becomes repetitive.

The bedrooms are fine however they would benefit from an update and a lick of paint.

The corridors are in need of new carpets, they've clearly not been changed since the hotel was built and have seen better days.

The 'animation' team seemed to work hard offering the usual sporty activities during the day and then shows, karaoke and discos in the evening.

Personally I wouldn't go back to Tunisia as it's a bit too dirty and unkempt for my liking. However if it's your type of place and you can get the Chic Khan cheap enough it's worth a short stay but I'd suggest paying a bit more and staying in one of the newer hotels overlooking the sea.

Just got back from a week in Hammamet looking for winter sun .....there wasn't any unfortunately -it rained, the wind blew constantly and it was very very cold.
First point then ..don't go to Tunisia at this time of year if you want to sunbathe !!!
Second point ....don't go to Hammamet if you can't sunbathe and therefore need to go outside the hotel ...there is nothing there ..desolate holiday complex's with inhospitable locals who pester all and sundry.
Third point ..Chich Khan is a hotel going through change ..a fading Iberostar hotel that was abandoned by the former owners who concentrated on their bigger 5 star hotels locally. However the new owners are trying really hard to give value for money and they do. My wife and I are very fussy and were very surprised that the food was excellent and varied and the wine/alcohol although somewhat weak was plentiful and very drinkable. Rooms were clean and well maintained but cold ( heating started at 7.00pm in the evening !!!).Staff were great and if you tipped according to tradition 10TD (£4.00) to barman and Head waiter at start and same at end of holiday plus the occasional 2TD (£.80) when the waiter brings your drinks ( they know what you drink after day 1) you will be fine ....no one ever tells you these things ! We stayed 1 week and struggled to spend £100 which was mostly tips and a few cheap gifts.
Point 4 ...Tunisia is a 3rd World Nation as our rep told us on the trip from airport to hotel ..it feels like it and possibly worse. The infrastructure is awful but the roads are great...why? The surroundings are desolate ...think Beirut minus the bullet holes....groups of rude men on street corners ...ladies beware the touchy feely hotel staff as well ...you may like it my wife hated it.
Pont 5 Airports are clean and modern but the passport staff are over officious and aggressive and soooooo slow ...we were early for our flight home and got through final passport control 1 minute before we were able to board our plane.
We will not be going back to Tunisia or any Islamic country ever again however...sorry Hotel Chich Khan you are a great team and try hard ...pity you are not in Spain.

Room Tip: Quiet rooms are 2nd floor overlooking the pool

This was our second time in Tunisia but first time staying at the Chich Khan hotel. We wanted a girly getaway and stayed there for the last week of February. Considering it was out of season and the weather was a bit hit and miss, we just can’t wait to go back in the Summer!

Hotel:

Most of the time it was nice sunbathing weather, but if it ever wasn’t that great, then there is plenty to do around the hotel. Pool tables, table tennis ect and cosy bar. We treated ourselves to a spa afternoon which is situated in the hotel and it was lovely. Back massage, body scrub, steam room, facial and Jacuzzi for just 100 dinar (about £40).

Surroundings:

If you wander outside or go down to the Medina you may get hassled a bit to buy something, but a firm no thank you does the trick. Before travelling, we read that this bothered a few people, but you have to respect and embrace the fact that you are experiencing a different culture.

At this time of the year, the beach is quite dirty and unkempt so unless you’re very brave then we wouldn’t advise going down there, but it’s nice to walk along the path at the top.

Staff:

We had a great time, and this was mostly down to the excellent staff and the animation team. Tipping the waiters a couple of dinar really goes a long way. They really appreciate it and you will have a table and your drinks already waiting for you next time. All of them are so friendly and make you feel like you are the only table in the restaurant.

We really cannot praise the animation team enough. They are a lovely bunch of guys who work so hard every day and night to keep everyone happy and laughing. Thank you Marmadoo, Midi, Luki, Badi, the DJ and the rest! You made our holiday and we are still laughing at memories from your evening shows.

We sat with Ali Baba in the shisha lounge most nights before the entertainment and we always had a giggle!

We must also give a mention to the Director Mr Oussama Makdouli who really looked after us and made sure everything was okay throughout the holiday. At the time of booking, we requested a pool view room but found this wasn’t the case when we arrived. We asked reception if there was anything that could be done, but straight away he moved us to a pool view free of charge. You really made us feel welcome so thank you for that.

The rep Anthony was so helpful throughout our holiday. He is very thorough and full of info at the welcome meeting so you feel well looked after and he is around the hotel quite a lot if you have any queries.

Thank you to everyone at Chich Khan who made our holiday one to remember, and we look forward to seeing you again in the Summer!!

I have just returned from a lovely holiday with my mum and two brothers 17 and 20 at the Chich Khan.

Good Points:
-The hotel staff are outstanding they will bend over backwards to make sure you are best taken care of whether its refilling your coffee cup or attending to maintenance. The manager is very hands on and attentive to the needs of his guests one of the best i've ever met.
-The hotel is a comfortable walk (about 10 mins) to the medina (shopping centre) be prepared to be hassled though they are not to aggressive and will usually be quite good with bartering. The beach is also not far.
-There are a few trips to do camel rides evenings out the zoo and cabaret so tae extra money.
The food in the hotel is amazing lots of new things to try and all fresh they are big on fish but you can also get pastas with your choice of filling pizzas chips meat was mainly beef / turkey with a different sauce each evening. in seven days did not have any trouble going for seconds because everything was so nice. there is a choice of a la carte once per week of Italian or Mexican we didn't get round to this with trips etc but other guests said it was nice.
The rooms are clean and tidy the housekeeping comes in every couple days the hotel in general is spotless you can see them working very hard to keep it that way.
- Free Wifi in the reception

Not so good points
-The rooms are very comfortable but for me personally the matress was a little firm causing a couple aches and pains but there is a spa downstairs if you want to treat yourself to a nice massage.
-We did have a little trouble with a balcony door that didnt lock but the manager was very good in dealing with this and checking himself that it had been done.
-The hotel carried out some pipe maintenance during our stay we did not have water for one day it was back on and nice and hot ready for getting showered for dinner again manager very apologetic for any inconvenience but it is winter and anyone to complain about this seriously is being unrealistic about travelling to winter destinations.
-Around the resort you will get hassled and people will stop you and say that they work in your hotel (they don't) they want to take you to their shop for commission say no thank you keep walking.
The entertainment team could do a little more for the evening maybe this was limited due to the time of year but the shows where sometimes a little slow however the cabaret night well worth a watch they all give 200% effort was a good night. during the day they got my brothers off playing football archery etc so no complaints there.

Overall despite the very rubbish weather that we had for the week we had a great time and are already looking at going back in the summer. This is as honest a review as i could right hope it helps happy holidays :D
