“Falling short”
Reviewed November 3, 2011

We've just returned from an all inclusive week and, all in all, had a good time. However, there are shortfalls in relation to the hotel and I wouldn't return to Tunisia again.

The hotel decor was lovely with lots of pleasant areas to sit. Our room was clean, comfortable and we had a view over the pool and mountains but were not disturbed in the evenings at all. We don't do the kind of entertainment on offer but it didn't intrude as the bingo type stuff was in a cellar at the other end of the hotel. We weren't disturbed by noise in the evenings at all as there was none outside or in the main bar area. For about five minutes you have to tolerate the Animation Team gathering the kids for the 'mini disco' making 'whooping' noises and shouting at everyone but they soon disappear. The indoor bar, and downstairs coffee bar, were lovely and the staff very friendly and helpful. However, I hope never to hear Celine Dion singing that Titanic theme again. One CD - all week. I asked them to change it, which they couldn't do, but they did turn it down.

We are unfussy vegetarians and there was plenty for us to eat but not one vegetarian main course during the whole week unless you count pizza. We were hoping for some veggie couscous but everything contained meat/fish and it was quite difficult to communicate with the staff about what was in the food - even in French. The alternative menues - Mexican, Asian, Italian - were similarly void of anything vegetarian. We ate well, but the options were limited - eggs, salads and bread. No cheese to speak of really.

The pool side isn't our thing but we gave it a go. Towels badly need replacing. Too noisy, too crowded and not enough sun beds. The pool was too cold to venture into. We tended to go to the beach which wasn't crowded and where the water was warmer. A shame you couldn't get coffee or tea - or even beer - at the beach though. It would also have been nice if the beach could have been cleaned up a bit each day. Not everybody puts their fag ends and cups in the bin at the end of the day. The beach vendors were a pain in the neck but you soon get used to pretending to be asleep or telling them to leave you alone if they are too persistent.

Glad we didn't go on the pirate ship - the music could be heard from the beach and, worryingly, was Gloria Gaynor's 'I will survive'. We were warned that the safety standards on the boats will not be what we would expect.

Don't bother with Carthage. If you like ruins and monuments and the like, it will seriously disappoint you. Read about it instead. As art lovers, we thought Sidi Bou Said might be interesting. It is quite quaint but if you wander to the top of the village to look at the view across the Med you will come to a steep fall to the sea where the rubbish is dumped.

Our room was very clean and comfortable. The sheets and towels were changed as often as you wanted them to be. Would have welcomed a safe in the room rather than having to pay for use of one and then having to see the reception staff every time you wanted the master key.

No holiday will be perfect or suit everyone. On the whole we were comfortable, served well and fed and watered to a satisfactory extent. No sickness, slept well, enjoyed the sunshine, and the sea, whilst rough, was nicer than anything you'd ever get here. Wouldn't go back though.

We selected an all-inclusive as we had were taking two young children and thisallowed them the freedom to help themselves to a variety of food and there was also entertainment provided for them. The hotel has an airey and impressive reception area. All staff that we had contact with were very heplful and very nice without exception.

Our room was on the ground floor and was convenient to both pools which gave the children the freedom to come and go when they wanted but also allowed us to keep an eye on them. The outside pool was very nice but was so cold that it was almost heart stopping. The indoor pool was much more comfortable and was a big hit with the children.

The food was nice enough though did tend to be a little repetitive. There was a large choice and a number of things were made to order while you wait. Waffles, pancakes and paninis were popular at the pool cafe around 4pm.

Our childen did not take part in the daytime activities but the youngest went to the disco around 8.30pm. Following this was other entertainment from the animation team and there were instances where we felt that some of the content was not quite appropriate for the children of a younger age who were still there. The animation team tried very hard to engage with people, right throughout the day. It's a difficult job to get people to participate but they stuck to it.

The public areas were bright and generally seemed well looked after. The gardens and rooms do need updating and were a little shabby.

The hotel is convenient to the beach and the hotel has it's own beach area where soft drinks and food are part of the all inclusive deal. There is a small pleasure park about 5 minutes walk away and we had an enjoyable day there for about 15 dinars each - do not expect Disneyworld!

Also under the all inclusive deal, you are able to dine at 4 other Iberostar restaurants during the week but you do need to book in advance and we found that 3/4 days was needed.

Taxis are realtively cheap and a trip into Hammamet was only 6 dinars. It pays to negotiate with whatever you buy - deals can be done.

Overall we enjoyed the holiday but as all inclusive is not our usual choice, this did tend to take off some of the shine.

Just got my mobile bill through and have discovered that the maid or somebody else who had access to my room made a lovely set of calls all on one day totallying nearly £100. Didn't even leave my phone on show. I am disgusted and will be taking this further. Also found the staff overbearing and rather pervy, probably due to my blonde hair. In the actual resort, all you get is hounded by Tunisian men. Lost my patience in the end and decided to stay away from the shops. Will not be going back. I don't recommend Tunisia OR this hotel to anybody.

We have just returned from Chich Khan and I cant complain! Plenty of food, and good quality better than what we were expecting. The animation team were great and had a really good laugh with them and the waiters from the pool bar. Beach was a little dirty and got pestered a little but I found a friendly thank you to be no problem.
Had lots of fun around the pool and in the 'Tam Tam' disco!! The DJ certainly made my time here really enjoyable.
Room was always kept clean and when we said to the maid its ok it doesnt need a clean today she insisted on coming in to check and cleaned anyway!!
All the staff were friendly, hotel clean, plenty of food. Would go again, we went for a fortnight for a bit of a relax and to get away and have some fun, and thats what we did!! Can't comment for much outside the hotel, there is a fixed price shop just down the road which was quite cheap and we were left alone to browse.

After reading the reviews that seemed a little daunting, decided seeing is believing as to some of the adverse comments. Well they seem to be founded and this has been the worst Iberostar i have stayed in, food poor, accomadation tired, flies never seen anything as bad as there ,and belive you me i have been round 3/4 world or more ,beach area full of camel muck as well flies and not enough beds to meet demand on the days that are sunny, not only contet with this short fall you cannot get all inclusive beer on the beach. The idea that you can use the facilities of the other Ibero's close by is a nonsense called in on for a coke and had to pay 10 dnt for two small ones.
Yes you do get pesterd by the local lucky boys on the beach and on the streets but a little firmness soon gets rid of them.
The staff in the hotel are very good and try there best to accommodate with the means at there diposal, so the rooms are tired but clean, bar staff very efficient , as to are the resteraunt staff, I think the animation team need to get there act together, and make a little less noise round the pool area, the night time entertainment was to a poor standard with a lot of sexual jestures in the presence of young children.
The towels in the hotel could do with replacing this includes the beach towels (use better to claen my car).
It is a bit monotonous walking to the beach day after day, I will certainly pick a hotel closer to the beach in future.
All in all the Tunisia experience was a bit of a flop and was glad to be on our way home , so it will be a long time before we return if ever.
However we met some fantastic people on our travel .

Room Tip: front of hotel, not pool side if you want quite at night

I will not be going back to the Chich Khan the music is none stop and one of the lads in the entertainment team made more noise and needs to realize that some people come for a quiet relaxing holiday and dont want people shouting and blowing whistles in your ear.The rest of the staff were good bedrooms were clean did not think much of head waiter at night in the dinning room it was like a mad house I think this hotel is for the young so if you are looking for a nice quite holiday this is not the hotel for you.
