As I'm about to book my fourth visit to the Riu Palace Oceana I thought I'd take a minute to catch up on the latest reviews and, like other visitors, I just have to say that BMP_9 must live in a parallel universe. It is unfortunate if they had a poor taxi driver - but that is hardly the hotel's fault! The hotel has arranged cars for us on our last two holidays and they have been very safely driven on the excellent roads from both Tunis or Monastir airports.

On every occcassion we have stayed here the rooms have been spotlessly clean and looked after very well each day. The public areas are very well maintained - whether it is the wide corridors outside the rooms, the bar or restaurant or the gardens and pools.

We have alway recieved excellent service and nothing is too much trouble for the staff. They treat all guests extremely well and take immense pride in remembering return guests and treat them like family.

The restaurant serves a wide variety of food that suits both our different tastes and the Tunisian wine is delicious and tremendous value for money. Each time we have stayed it has been during Rammadan (the last time we stayed was within days of BPM_9's stay) and not once has there been an issue with service. The staff take it in turns to take at short break aroung sunset to break their fast but this is usually around the time that most people are up in their rooms getting ready for dinner.

Although French is the second laguage spoken in Tunisia after Arabic almost all of the hotel staff speak very good English - in fact I am always amazed as they move from guest to guest around the bar switching from English to German to Italian without seeming to miss a beat.

We could not reccommend this hotel highly enough to anyone wanting a quiet and relaxing break in very comfortable surroundings with good food and wine. There are a variety of trips you can take from the hotel within two or three hours drive and it is a short and inexpensive taxi ride into Hammamet town where there are numerous restaurants and cafes as well as a well preserved medina.

Having read the horror stories of so many tripadvisors on Tunisian hotels & the general feeling that 5 stars in Tunisia equates with 3 stars elsewhere, I was very careful in choosing a hotel. The reviews for Riu Palace Oceana at Hammamet were very good & I therefore spent more than I normally would for private travel & we were not disappointed. The staff at the hotel were friendly, courteous and responsive. The rooms were clean and comfortable but not remarkable & the maid service was excellent. The food was plentiful & fresh, with tremendous choice. As we had our 5 year-old with us, we did not go to the a la carte restaurant in the main hotel but to the buffet. However, we also eat a few times in the evening at the small cafe between the big pool and the beach & it was a very good standard & a peaceful, uncrowded place to enjoy a meal.

We did not move much out of the hotel, as we really wanted a rest, so I cannot comment on Hammamet. We hardly used the beach, but it was reasonable. We live in Barbados, so we have high standards for beaches. We used the main circular pool in the garden behind the hotel, but also the large indoor one as it was often empty. My wife used the spa & found the staff friendly & the rates not exaggerated. Our young son was extremely well treated by everyone he met at the hotel.

I stay often in 5 star hotels for work and although I have seen better, more modern & well-equipped rooms, I think that the general standard of the Riu merits 5 stars. Others have mentioned that not speaking French is a handicap. I speak fluent French so could not judge, but my wife & son do not & they found they could manage easily enough with English. If you want to go to Tunisia, don't risk ruining your holiday by going to a cheap hotel. Pay a bit extra and get pretty good value for money.

One warning: taxis. We took a taxi from the airport in Tunis & they tried to charge us double the cost (160 dinars against roughly 80). we refused upon arrival at the hotel & gave 100 after consultation with the reception desk. The taxi driver was furious. For the return we booked with one of the taxis at the hotel after prior agreement oin the price.

This hotel was selected by our Golf coach for a group of us, so we were reassured to find it ranked highly on TripAdvisor before we arrived.

As other reviewers have mentioned, the Oceana is a clean hotel set in beautiful gardens with leisure activities within the grounds, directly adjacent to the beach. Arriving without any local currency, it was useful to find an ATM cash dispenser in the lobby.

All the rooms face the sea, with comfortable terraces. The only slight negative was that the loo flushing system was a bit erratic, even after they had efficiently sent a maintenance person to fix it . There were no tea/coffee making facilities in the room.

There is a large buffet for meals, although after a few days, the choices were somewhat repetitive. The large lobby bar area offered rather limited cocktails. They ran out of Campari on our 3rd day, and it was never replaced before we left 4 days later. But then, one is in a largely Muslim country, so probably no surprise that the provision of alcohol is a rather low priority! The Tunisian wines, on the other hand, were surprising good and and very inexpensive. The Chateau Mornag red was easy drinking and around 7 Euros a bottle, even at hotel prices.

The staff were friendly and helpful. Most spoke English, although French was their main 'foreign' language. Some spoke German as well.

Our daily golfing trips were highly enjoyable. The Citrus Golf Course is of a particularly high standard, with a coach service to and from the hotel.

This hotel did not disappoint, and was roughly on par with the Malta Hilton at a similar latitude.

Good day -
I was somewhat amazed to read certain comments in this thread ,
from BPM_9 - and with all due respect , and without prejudice , may I suggest that perhaps
the hotel and taxi /route were not that of the Hotel on this thread .
I am a frequent contributor to this site and feel it is a great pity that certain comments
sometimes seem to be in relation to other places and not the subject of the thread in question !
Long live this great hotel !
A.

Though the lobby might not be striking at the first sight, the gardens are very beautiful, the sea and the beach are the best the nature can offer. But what makes the real difference is the personnel: they are always warm, smiling, ready to help you, to make your stay a memorable one. Though the minibar was not properly functioning and TV had channel receiving problems in the room, everything was clean, spacious. Every day, when you come back to your room, you find small surprises like flowers spread in the bed or the curtains ornated with flowers. However, I do not recommend the spa. The massage therapists are not very skilled and do rather a below average job.
