“Almost perfect but few things can be improved”

Me and my wife travelled to this nice hotel for 10 days begining of June. We reached around 1 AM and were promptly checked in. Though had to wait for the welcome cocktail for good 15 - 20 min. despite the reception guy calling for it as soon as we reached there. No big deal but we wanted to check in asap to unpack and hit the pool.

Room was perfect. We upgraded with limited sea view room and I have to say that despite being limited, we had whole sea in front of our balcony. Its a room on 3rd floor and had ample space in room and it was well designed. Only thing is you have two single beds joined together rather then a one big bed. That might be tunisian thing.

Lobby and other hotel areas are nice. Beach was fantastic and sea was gentle. There are plenty of water activities and we did para sailing which was good value for money. Much cheaper then the Caribbean resorts.

Drinks were generally ok though I didn't like cocktails and they all tasted strong spirit. I settled to eaither bear or whiskey. Please note some alcohal brands are not included in all inclusive.

My main issue with resort was food. Though there is a plenty of choice but being a 5 star , I would not want to eat in same buffet every day for both my main meals. The fresh meat grill counter had pretty much same choices every day. Pasta was good but how much you can have. All in all, food was a bit of let down for us but that's every one's own preferences. The ala carte restaurants have set menus and you can not change it which again seems a bit odd to me. May be hotel management should think about having ala carte open all week and have different cuisine and add some spice like mexican, italian , arabic etc.

Hotel staff and manager works hard and makes your holiday even better. Its catered mainly for retired french couples who are looking for some time in sun and there was not much of young crowd. Night entertainment is next to none. One night in 10 days we had 15 min of belly dancing but other than that it was just music out of a stereo. Tom, some days sings live but management should think of having some good , thought out evening entertainment.

I would not go back to same resort but definitely to Tunisia.

Room Tip: Ask for sea view room.

The Riu Palace Oceana is a hotel that will definitely not disappoint you, beautiul grounds and wonderful staff but as we had a fair few queries at the beginning of the week before we settled into a good routine, I have put together a few tips for future travellers:

MONEY
As you can't take Tunisia currency in or out of the country, you will have to exhange it all either at the airport, hotel or bank. Th exchange rate is fixed by the government each week so you will not get ripped off anywhere that you decide to exchange money. As we went all inclusive we did not take that much spending money with us, but what we did bring we brought in cash and kept in our safe all week, just changing it at the reception desk as and when we needed it. However on Sunday (the final day of our holiday) we tried to change money and were told they didn't have any money, not sure if this was because it was a Sunday, but just a warning. We changed our remaining dinars back to pounds at the airport on the Sunday evening which was quick and hassle free.

Tipping
It seems normal to tip around 1 dinar on towels service, drinks orders and then we left a larger tip at the end of the week for the maid service. When we arrived and a porter took our bags to our room, we had not exchanged any money by then, but we offered him some English coins which he was happy with.

Food & Drink
All Inclusive includes 3 buffet sittings eeach day 7 - 10am for breakfast, 12.45 - 3 for lunch and 2 sittings for dinner 6.30 - 8 or 8.3-0 - 10pm. Choose your sitting wisely as you will be expected to stick to the same dinner sitting for the rest of your week. Breakfast and lunch are open seating but for dinner, the head waiter will assign you to a table which will be yours for dinner for the rest of the meal. It was not clear what drinks could be had with your meal which were included, but by the end of the week it seemed it was all sodas, beers & some wines. Cocktails in the lobby bar are all inclusive and tasty, especially the 'Vodka Sunrise' and come accompanied by cheese and olives. Selected alcoholic drinks are included so it is best to check before you order. A green receipt will be left on your table at meals after ordering drinks, some waiters were keen on you to sign this before leaving and some did not seem bothered, we took to asking to sign it each time to save confusion. Drinks in the minibar are also included and restocked each day.

Beach & Pool
Both areas are lovely though we found it easier to get sunloungers on the beach as there were plenty whilst the sunloungers around the pool filled up more quickly, but we made use of both the beach and the pool frequently. There are plenty of watersports to try and there are some people that walk up and down selling items, but we receievd no hassle.

Old Hammamet and Yassmine Hammamet
We took a taxi to Old Hammamet that cost us 6 dinars (taxis can be ordered at the reception desk). Old Hammamet had a traditional market with plenty of shops and pushy sellers, be prepared to say no and if you do want to buy, be wary of the price selers first give you, we found we were able to buy prices at around a fifth of the original price offered. Worth a visit though to experience local culture.
You can walk to Yassmine Hammamet along the beach in around 20 mins and this has more updated restaurants, bars & shops.

We had a lovely holiday and the staff were happy to accomodate anything we asked, when we asked for a room on the last day as we had to check out at noon but our transfer wasnt until 10.30pm, the hotel provided us with another room at a reasonable price.

The only negative I'd say is that the staff seemed to make slightly less of an effort with us as we are a young couple (both 19), and constantly assumed we were half board rather than all inclusive during food & drink orders, however this was easily corrected.

If you're not looking for too much to do other than relax on the beach or by the pool with the odd trip to Yassmine or Old Hammamet this hotel is definitely for you!

I like good hotel gardens to relax in on holiday. I chose this hotel because it had lovely gardens, allowed no children under 16, all rooms were junior suites, was in a quiet area of South Hammamet and had generally good reports from Trip Advisor. The sort of terminology utilised by previous guests made it more interesting for me.Stayed June 1st until the 10th 2012.
Checked in late and was still made to feel welcome and after reaching the room two plates of cold meat and cheese salad arrived. An extremely thoughtful gesture. Good Start.
The room was huge with a sitting area and equally huge balcony. Separate walk in dressing area with tea and coffee making facilities, mini bar and safe. Large bathroom with bath, separate walk in shower and separate toilet cubicle.
Next morning the views of the pool, gradens and sea were even better than anticipated.Gardens full of bird song and wonderfully sunny.
Room kept very clean and tidy by Samira, our wonderful maid who spoke to me in a mixture of French, German, Arabic and English.I'm British, speak German as my second language and speak a very small amount of Arabic and French so we were able to communicate well. It was good fun.
Buffet food at breakfast and dinner was excellent. Good quality and plenty of choice.
Staff service in the dining room was pretty good except at breakfast when they were reluctant to approach tables to ask about coffee or tea. Tables were also left full of plates at breakfast and not cleaned quickly enough. Minor point for the management to address not a complaint.
I wanted a peaceful relaxing holiday with a good room and good food. I was able to find everything I wanted with this hotel. I will return next June 2013 and have every confidence that I will find exactly what I want personally from a holiday at the RIU Palace Oceana. I would recommend this hotel very highly if like me you just want the simple things I require from my break away from Britain. Best of all during the Jubilee celebrations Britain was rained upon mercilessly and the sun just shone and shone in Tunisia.

Room Tip: Book a pool, gardens and sea view room. Worth the difference.

We chose this hotel during an internet search. The pool and the gardens are what attracted us. We were not disappointed in anyway by this hotel. We arrived at 1.30a.m. we checked in and went straight to the room as we were very tired. No sooner had we got to our room the hotel had sent up a complimentary snack. This was a pleasent suprise and the start of a great holiday and stay at this hotel. The hotel was adult only, which was great for us.
The gardens and the pool were just how they looked on the photo's. We got a sunbed every day with no hassle, always in a good position. I would say that anywhere in the garden was a good position and you will always get the sun, if its shining. We were very lucky that the sun shone a lot during our stay.
We were half board and the buffet breakfast and dinners were excellent. Plenty of choice of hot and cold food. All the staff in the dining room were helpful and smiled. My one negative point was at breakfast, somedays you had to ask for coffe more than once.
The room were very spacious and kept very clean by the houskeeping staff. We were given a room with a wonderful view of the gardens and sea.
The hotel made need a bit of tlc and updating, but this did not matter due all the staff being excellent at their job.
When we left we said we would return next year and I would recommend anyone going on holiday to Hammermet to stay at this hotel.

Room Tip: Any one overlooking the gardens will get a sea view as well.

Having read the reviews on this hotel we were alittle wary of going, BUT....... a few true facts
The hotel is now adult only - being mainly German and French - very few English at the hotel
The hotel is very nice, but is not 5*, maybe a good 4* would be better
Food - mmmmm - OK could be better
Drinks - although cheap - they are cheaper from the shop around the corner!!
Its not worth going all inclusive - Tunisia is so cheap don't waste your money
Sunbeds - excellent, comfy and lots of them (no getting up at 5am to get one!)
Staff - absolutely fantastic, especially the animation team - 3 of the best blokes ever!
The hotel is in the middle of nowhere - be prepared to walk to the nearest resort - Yassmine Hammamet but don't expect much when you get there!
Would we go again? Probably not for a few years - too quiet - you can hear a pin drop during the day around the pool - its VERY QUIET

Room Tip: Choose a ground floor room - straight out the door onto the pool around - FAB!

We have just returned from a two week holiday (27th May to 10th June 2012) at this hotel and what a fantastic experience we had. We chose this hotel because it is adults only (booked through Thomson's Couples brochure) and we were not disappointed. The service and quality was 5* from start to finish. We will definitely be going back next year.

We would like to say a big thank you to all the staff and the General Manager, Mr Neves, for all their hard work and professionalism in making our holiday so memorable.

If your looking for quality, service, elegance and that personal touch then I would definitely recommend this hotel. It is based in a quiet residential area with a couple of hotels either side and is a 20 min walk along the beach to Yasmine Hammamet or a good 1hr 30 min walk to Old Hammamaet. Both can also be reached by taxis which are very cheap.

Evening entertainment is fairly low key - pianist in the bar, lounge singers and on a couple of evenings traditional tunisian entertainment, ie, belly dancers.

We stayed in room 228 on the second floor which had a lovely pool view. During our stay, my partner celebrated a special birthday, and on the day the room was decorated with towel art and fresh flowers and in the restaurant for breakfast the table was decorated with fresh flowers and we were given two complimentary glasses of champagne - wonderful.

As for food and drink - the main restaurant was excellent. White linen table cloths, napkins and fresh roses on the table everyday. Waiter service for drinks, chef's on hand to ask questions about any of the dishes and live cooking stations for Pasta, Fish, Steak etc. Loads of salads, bread, vegetables, accompaniments and desserts.

The pool scene is quiet and relaxed by day and the best thing is NO CHILDREN!

If you have any hesitation in booking this hotel - DON'T, just go ahead, book it, and enjoy it!!!

The director general Mr Neves is the most hands on I have ever seen.He has an excellent rapport with all his staff and it shows in the quality of service throughout. He is constantly about the hotel and obviously has everything running smoothly.Another innovation was seeing the head chef constantly about and very pleasant and helpful. The staff were all very smart and always very wll attired.the grounds, swimming pools and beach were always in very good appearance and the hotel in general was excellent.
