“Good hotel for good price”
Reviewed June 27, 2013

Just back from a week stay at Omar Khayam. (17th-23rd)
We were worried after reading some of the reviews but we were very happy when we got there.
The staff at the reception were friendly and willing to answer any questions, although the language barrier does sometimes make for misunderstandings but I can't speak Arabic/French so can't really complain about their English.
Our room (2536) was great for us. No complaints, if you’re expecting 5 star accommodation you may be disappointed.
Maids do a great job to ensure rooms are clean with fresh towel daily.
Pools are all clean and there are plenty of sun beds to put under parasols.
Slides are good fun especially if you have a rubber ring or lie-low. There is a quieter pool with fewer children at the other side of the hotel if you want a quiet swim this is a good spot.
The beach has lots of activities, we chose to do jet-skiing and parasailing at affordable prices (50DT per person for jet skis and 60 DT for both of us in the parasail).
Pedalos, kayaks, windsurfing and catamarans are free to use. The beach is kept clean with lots of sun beds to use.
Most food is cooked in front of you. Some things are very fresh as there was a huge tuna fish for dinner on a few occasions.
There is always something to eat for the unadventurous e.g. chips, pizza and salad.
If you are adventurous there is Tunisian food you could try too.
The snack bars offer chips, pizza, salad and best of all, cooked to order, pancakes with chocolate sauce!!!!
Well worth doing is the pirate ship cruise (with Thomson holidays 39DT per person)
Lunch is provided and sunscreen is advised.
Warning you will be asked to participate in the entertainment.
Quad biking, bookable with a salesman in the hotel, (as is the pirate ship) these are great fun and worth doing (60DT per person)
Overall it is a good all inclusive holiday destination for the money.
Good location
Good food
Good fun

We arrived on the 17th June and left on the 24th.

On arrival, we thought the hotel seemed very basic and the room was situated far away from the reception (We had asked for a quiet room so I guess we got this haha). As stated in the travel brochure we did get two single beds which were not able to be pushed any closer to make it like a double which I have seen in a few other hotels. Apart from this It was a clean and comfortable room with decent air conditioning and a nice view.

The next day we were able to buy a safety deposit box from reception and hire towels for at the beach (20 dinar per towel and 20 for box. Bring your own beach towel as these were not very good)

We booked two excursions with Thomson

Sail Away- pirate ship
lively, entertaining, cheap, half day.
However, it took an hour and a half to get there from our hotel! This was a big inconvenience but I would say the only negative part of this trip.
The food on this trip was not to our taste as it was fish but others seemed to enjoy it.
I would say this was worth the money and a good laugh.

Zulu - Zoo trip

EXCELLENT! Worth every penny if you like animals! Got some amazing pics and fed a giraffe :) Show and meal were good too.

At the hotel
Staff - reception staff were helpful and pleasant
cleaners - friendly and did a good job of the rooms.
Bar staff - polite and helpful
animation team - good with the kids and not too pushy with the adults which was good.

Food - It was ok (meat had a lot of bones and fat) but because me and my husband are picky we ate mostly pizza, chips, pasta and salad.

Last day - We were told to wait until the last day at 9am to ask for a late checkout. However, there were no rooms left. We didn't need to check out until 12 but because we had went to reception early we were put out of the room and had to wait until 10.30pm before going to the airport. This was a bit of a nighmare! We were offered the chance to have showers in a room at 6pm to freshen up a bit. Helped a little but still a very long day.

Beach - excellent! Free kayaking and pedalos! Lovely beach, always got a sunlounger and there was a volleyball court set up too. Could do para-sailing and use jet-skis too (not sure how much they were though).

Money - PAIN, PAIN, PAIN! We were advised to take traveller's cheques and no cash only to discover you could change ENGLISH notes at the local exchange two mins from the hotel. Keep all receipts from exchange you will need these to change currency back to sterling in the airport.
Cash machine very close to hotel few hundreds metres to the right of the hotel (remember to inform bank you are going on holiday! (I unfortunately did not do this!)

Entertainment - Our one and only experience of the evening entertainment was ok to start with (for the kids though) but a bit poor at night so we left early. It may have been better on other nights though!

Overall good hotel for the money and would go again.

Room Tip: we asked for a quiet room, high up with a nice view when booking with Thomson.

I cannot praise the people, the country, the service, the food, the hotel and the staff enough. I had a fabulous time here at the Omar and would go again tomorrow. The room was large spacious and airy, cleaned regularly and fresh towels on request. Met some lovely British people who appreciate Tunisia and the culture. I suggest if you want British food to stay in Britain, as Pizza, Chips, Pasta. Pancakes all made fresh obviously aren't "British food". A big thank you to all the staff at the Omar for there very warm welcome, service, friendliness. I suggest that if you like warm weather, beautiful sandy beaches and a fabulous hotel that you give this one a try, go with and open mind and ignore a lot of the whining in some of these views.

Just back this morning, and I cannot see what people are complaining about. I have been to Tunisia 4 times now, and people need to remember this is a Three Star Hotel. It provides three star service, very well. Rooms are basic and clean. I am tall, and my feet stuck out the end of the bed, but hey, they did that at the Hilton as well. Aircon in my room was excellent, and bed comfortable.

Food caters for all nationalities. On Thursday they had a 5 foot long Tuna fish carved in front of you for the freshest grilled tuna steak ever. There is an al a carte restaurant, free once per week, where the traditional Tunisian meal was lovely. There were five of us in our party, and you could always take your meal outside from the main restaurant to the "La Brise" barbecue restaurant.

People do try and sell you things - some sanctioned by the hotel and some not. Say "No" and they go away. It happens everywhere in Africa. The "veteran" staff are all very friendly because they speak many languages, some of the younger ones are just not confident in their language skills - never found any sign of rudeness.

If you want 5* then pay several hundred extra and go to the Riu Palace. I had a great holiday and would not hesitate to go back.

I went with my family at beginning of June it cost a lot of money for all inclusive it is mainly Russian and German speaking and the food is catered for them it is cabbage most of the time and slop I wouldn't give my dog most of the English people on the resort were like us not eating and having to look elsewhere for food but outside the complex there are no restaurants we didn't eat for three days and eventually had to upgrade to another hotel the rep was only there for an hour in the evening no English entertainment one snack bar that did the same horrible food as the al a carte restaurant t and one pool side bar with 3 bar men serving so be prepared tp que foe a beer . I found the staff not helpful and expected us to eat boiled chicken and rice for two weeks . I don't think so. Please take this review serious if you can't eat foreign food then don't go here

Arrived on the 5 june, the staff are rude thats if they converse in English , the food is not fit to give a dog , i would NOT give it to my dog , the entertainment is a Joke all in French in a dingy inside room. You have to sit where your told at meal times , the drinks are rubbish and have to pay for ice cream.

The room was crap the door rattled and had to be wedged in order to get some sleep , i spoke to the rep at the hotel about the poor quality of the food and was told to "JUST ASK FOR CHICKEN". needless to say the rep even left a few days later !!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was at this hole for 2 days with wife and 2 children we starved for 2 days , i had to upgrade to the Holiday villiage or return back to the UK as we could not have stayed at this hotel , i could go on forever about this crap place,

If you are English DO NOT GO TO THIS PLACE , this was recomended by First choice they should be ashamed. What they don't tell you is that the indoor pool and Gym belong to the sister hotel which is the other side of the road.
