We are early retired couple looking for value for money and great surroundings, we found it and really enjoyed our "Arab" Spring. Looking to escape the bleak spring in the UK ,I booked a last minute holiday with First Choice to Hammamet in search of sun. What a great week we had, plenty of sun, blue skies and lots of places to lay and soak it up around the beautiful outdoor pool, or swim in the heated indoor pool. Or wander down on to the beach which was adjacent to the hotel where there are camel and horses to ride up and down (negotiate the price stringently though!) The hotel, a large traditional building with spacious lobby with comfortbale sofas and chairs, was clean and fresh and welcoming. Our room, a standard double, was clean and comfortable, the beds were great. I suffer with a lot of back pain so was grateful for a comfy night's sleep. No noise or door banging and staff went about cleaning with a calm and efficient manner.

There was only one restaurant open as we were still in the "low" season (April 10 - 17) but the food was delicious and plentiful. An all inclusive self service style may not suit everyone but it was managed so well that there was no hassle. You could not go hungry!! The wine on tap was not to my taste but we ordered a bottle of Tunisian wine for about £8 which was fine. But the bars are open all day and evening serving every branded drink you could wish for.

The catering and bar staff were delgithfully friendly and welcoming, as were the young Animation team who organised activites and shows every evening.

To be honest for us there is not much else to do in the resort so if you want an exploring holiday or to shop this is not the resort for you, but for a lovely, peaceful restful break in very pleasant surroundings overlooking the Med its great. The marina is only a walk away, which we did everyday, then back along the beach, but you do get the usual hassle from locals trying to sell you everything from a camel ride to a massage at their sister's house!! So just be wary and stick to the recommended trip or activity providers via your holiday rep.

The First Choice team from collecting us at the airport to the end of the holiday were visible helpful and informative. Even when on our arrival at the airport to return, the baggage handlers had a wildcat strike (probably never been able to do that before their revolution!) they managed everything well keeping passengers informed and liaising with the airport management to get things moving as quickly as possible, and in the event we were only a couple of hours late, although Manchester passengers were transferred to the old airport at Monastir for their return flight. But this was organsied by First Choice with buses brought in and everyone knew what was happening. We will certainly return to this hotel, probably in October.

Room Tip: Our room overlooked the front of the hotel and we had no noise or disturbance, but it was low season so there maybe more comings and goings in the high season. It was comfortable with large beds and very clean.

I stayed at the Riu Marco Polo 14/4/13- 21/4/13 with my partner and 2 of our friends. An honest review...

AIRPORT
The tunisian airport was very slow we waited approx an hour and half to check in on our flight home.

STAFF
The staff were lovely very helpful. On our arrival we were welcomed by a refreshing drink and welcomed by a few of the staff whilst we waited for our room key/information. The animation team are amazing and really made our holiday! The drag & karaoke night were brilliant. The rep Adie was really helpful and always cheerful. On our second day we had a meeting wih the rep and were introduced to all the main staff who worked in the hotel including the manager!

ROOM
Good sized, extremely clean. Air con was not the best could be unbearable during the high season.

POOL
The main outside pool is huge with a pool bar and pool loungers - was very cold but we did go in. The indoor pool was alot warmer and we spent alot of time in there. We always managed to get a sun lounger around the pool!

BEACH
This was an absolute let down. I read reviews before we went and really hoped that the beach would have been cleaned for when we arrived but it was full of litter and horse/camel faeces. As soon as we stepped on to thebeach we were harrased by a local man asking us to get on the camel we politely said no thankyou but he grabbed us by the arm and tried to pull us towards the camel - very pushy and intimidating! There was no way you could relax on the beach which is a shame.

LOCAL AREA
We had a stroll around the marina which was pleasant. On one of the days we decided to go out of the hotel to have a walk around. As soon as we got away from the hotel we were approached by a man who said he worked at our hotel at the pizza bar. As we started to walk away he ran up to us and asked us if we knew of the 'festival' that was on in which we replied no and he insisted that we followed him so he could show us the festival but just took us to his sisters shop. This was also intimidating as once we got to the shop we were harrased to buy anything and everything but we eventually got out! After that we did not go out of the complex alone.

EXCURSIONS
We went on three excursions:
Zulu, Catamaran and Legends of tunisia all of which we enjoyed and felt safe.

OVERALL
The hotel is nice, food differs slightly but gets quite repetitive. Would not visit again but it was interesting to drive round the surrounding areas when on the excursions and see the culture of the country and the locals. Other than the bad points stated we had a great time a holiday is what you make it!

Room Tip: Would not have a room on the ground floor.

My wife and I stayed here for a week from 10 April 2013.
The hotel was superb, nice indoor pool and gym, large exterior pool with swim up bar, fantastic staff, excellent animation team and varied food although not too special, don't expect bacon.
The weather was excellent all week, high 70s , breakfast on the sun terrace and sunbathing till 4.30 p.m. The hotel beach was good but further afield the beaches were quite dirty, littered with plastic bottles and old cans although a start had been made to clean some of them up before the season starts.
Our room was at the back of the hotel, 4130, although we had a lateral sea view and the maid kept it very clean, there was a hair dryer and free safety deposit box.
We tipped the staff because the service was excellent although we avoided the people who wanted to carry our cases to the bus as the buses are close to the airport.
We were all inclusive so had no need to go out in the evening, preferring to have a drink at the bar or watching the animation team doing their best to entertain us.
If you venture out you do get hassled but keep on walking and you tend to be left alone.
All in all a lovely chilled out week.

Room Tip: Rooms at the front overlook the pool.

A bus full of tired holiday makers arrived late at the hotel (2am) and the reception staff were super efficient at providing a very brief & welcoming intro before handing out the welcome packs and keys and rallying the porters to show guests to their rooms. They had set out some food also for those who wanted a snack before settling in for the night. Our visit was at the end of March which is low season so the 2 speciality restaurants were not open. Even so, the main restaurant was excellant with a great choice every sitting with the hot dishes being cooked fresh before your eyes. A fab range of food, always fresh and hot. The temperature was in the low 20's most days and it became overcast in the afternoon, which was really nice having come from zero degree Britain. The days were spend relaxing by the pool and enjoying a bit of sporting competition with the animation team who organised many daytime activities - boules , archery, volleyball, darts etc. You can take it or leave it, they didnt hassle though we were usually willing to join in and break up the day. Its a good way of getting to know some of the other guests also. The evening entertainment is OK - there were a couple of acts brought and the animation team do the most - they are really good dancers and a lot of their shows revolve around this. The beer is OK for a couple of cold ones during the day. I found the bacardi to be horrid so I stuck to the wine or beer. The girls had a few cocktails which looked colourful and fancy but I'm not sure if they contained much alcohol.
The hotel is right on the beach, but being low season it was very dirty , they were making a start to clean it during the week we were there but we found it better to stay around the vast pool that is the centerpiece of the complex.
If you do venture outside of the hotel be aware that this is a country that frowns on females exposing any flesh and expect to be glared at regardless.
Generally within the tourist area's tourists will be targetted by people trying to part you with some money, this is more evident in Tunisia than many tourist resorts so do expect to be hassled a bit - but its the culture and you just need to stand your ground.
In Summary I would recommend the Marco Polo - and Tunisia if you can put up with a bit of hassle.

Room Tip: The rooms facing into the pool are best - the outer rooms just look onto the road or the carpark.
