Walk the shops. Stop by the Downtown Bar at 11 James street and listen to Bob Kissel sing every weekend from 4-9. This place is great they had swings for bar stools and the guys serving you are just great.

“Not to be misses”
Reviewed May 17, 2013

You realize how lucky you are to live in America when you visit the Thousand Islands (actually 1,865). This area of upper New York State is magnificent! Definitely a place for all members of the family - young and old. It doesn't matter when you visit, although summer seems to be prime.

“Unforgettable Vacation!”
Reviewed May 2, 2013

What an incredible area to visit! Be sure to see the area from one of the homes in the island. If you don't have friends or family there, check for places you can rent. That way, you are really living "in" the islands. The wildlife in the area is great... deer, racoons, osprey and many others abound. We were particularly fascinated by the snakes that we saw swimming about eating fish! They didn't seem to mind the cold water at all.

Equally important parts of the visit are to take a tour (by boat of course) through the homes and smaller islands to see some great architecture and places with lots of personality, then hit the "big" portion of the river, where you be dwarfed by the huge cargo ships making their way along!

If you are Southern (like us) and wimpy about cold water, you may find the water a little cool here. But it was not cool enough to keep our kids from enjoying the swimming and tubing. All the residents we encountered were friendly and very welcoming.

Be sure to stop at the Wellesly Island Dock and wander up to the town square and restaurant/ice cream shop. What an adorable area!

Even in the summer, nights can be cool, so pack a light sweater or cardigan. And don't forget the sunscreen; you may not feel "hot" cruising through the breeze in your boat, but you'll burn quickly.

“Yeah, just like the dressing”
Reviewed April 27, 2013

Ok - we were there in May and that was still to early to do anything, but a week or two more and we'd been about right. However, I'm so glad that I didn't miss is. We took a boat ride around the islands and got some history of the area. I regret that we weren't there when more was going on and when the weather was better, because it's a hauntingly beautiful place and there are great stories attached to many of the residences and residents. And yes, this is where 1000 Island dressing originated. There's a lot of history around, too, but we had to get to Niagara and who would want to miss that?
