A faded beauty

Review of Charoen Hotel
3.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed May 18, 2012
I've stayed here twice now and while it's a faded grand old girl I can't say I mind too much. The location is very good being close to the railway station i.e. markets and nightlife area.

The rooms are dated but it's OK if you're not the sort of person who needs everything to be just so. The bathrooms have the lowest shower heads I've ever seen anywhere in the world. They must have been installed by either a four foot plumber or someone who never washed his hair.

Breakfast is that Asian version of a western breakfast but they do a mean omelette which keeps you going most of the day. The clientele is mostly Thai so this is to be expected.

The one thing I do love about the hotel is the pool which is huge if slightly over-chlorinated, but a great place to sit and read a book over lunch and a couple of beers. At sundown it's off to the local market for some great authentic Thai food.

I don't make it to UT very often but if I do I stay here. It's OK for value for money and the service at the desk is always fine, but the bellboys and concierge are excellent and more than happy to get you anything you need (and even some things you don't).

Room Tip: Try to get a newer one ;-)

I've stayed in the Charoen Hotel for several times during my visits to Udon Thani. The hotel is nothing special, but for Isan-standards it's okay. Try to get a room in the new building as they are slightly better then the ones in the old building.
Location is perfect, near the shopping complex, restaurants and nightlife.
Staff is friendly and I will definitely stay there again.

Room tip: Try to get a room in the new building.

Not a luxury hotel, but the pool was great during song kran - the hottest time of the year in Thailand. Rooms are well furnished, even if a little dated, The price was good value as it also included breakfast. The hotel is a few minutes walk to the bus station and they offer a complimentary free shuttle to the airport, which very handy.

Room tip: Try for a room at the back of the hotel as the road is busy.

Don’t expect a Hilton or Marriott room for only 1050bt ! That’s what we paid for a clean and large room (30m²) including buffet breakfast, a comfortable bed, large and clean bathroom, good working airco and a swimming pool. And, yes, the hotel has been built during the Vietnamese war (In Udon Thani was a large US military base) , rooms are dated and the furnitures are older, nevertheless we have no complaints if we have to pay only 1050bt. Wifi . Good breakfast buffet.
The soreheads who have complaints, has to go to a higher class hotel, but that’s the problem in Udon Thani : there are no high end hotels in town !
Charoen hotel is centrally located , only 200m from busstation, 900m from trainstation and night market, 700m from central mall. The hotel consists of an older and a newer wing, 5 storeys high, and 250 rooms. Lunchbuffet at 250bt and dinerbuffet at 130bt !
Oh, one tip : ask a room at front side of hotel, because of loud disco at back side.

Took a group here this past November. The hotel was probably grand at one point, but now the glory has faded, the carpets are stained and a faint hint of old smoke lingers in the hallways. That being said, the staff was friendly, the food was great and the grounds nice.
