“Clean and central”
Reviewed November 12, 2010

Stayed here for two nights. As others have commented the hotel is very central next to the bus station, and with a number of expat hangouts (which are always great to get info on the city: Fuzzy Ken's is particularly recommended) in close proximity (5 min. walk or so). There are convenience stores, bars, markets and various other shops nearby.

Tiffany the owner is very friendly and speaks fluent English as others have also mentioned. Due to the lighthearted theme (cartoon characters) and bright colours used the place has a very fresh appeal.

My room was clean, of average size and had a comfortable bed, good aircon, small bar fridge, large traditional TV with more than 70 channels including a number of English language ones (BBC World News and others) and European as well as Asian channels. A cupboard for hanging clothes (with a shelf in it too), a low coffee table with two funky chairs, and two bedside tables complete the picture.

Bathroom was equally clean and has hot shower which worked well.

All rooms on the "A" floor (first floor) now have free wifi internet, and in my room it was of good quality (5 bars out of 5, and of good speed with no outages).

The road-side rooms get noise from the street (buses starting up fairly early in the morning, and mopeds/motorbikes/tuktuks during the night) so if you are a light sleeper perhaps best to request a room away from the street (it appears that half the rooms on each floor face the street, the other half the back of the hotel).

There is no working desk in the room which made it not practical for me to stay long-term as I need this to work, but overall my stay was a good experience and if you don't need a desk it is definitely recommended!

We stayed at the Silver Reef for 2 nights and couldn't have asked for anything else. VERY good location, right across from the bus station, and only a short walk to shopping centers, night markets, and the international hospital. The owners were really helpful and spoke English fluently. Would definitely stay there again.

I have stayed at the Silver Reef 3 times since May 2010 - and that speaks for itself. It is conveniently located less than a block from the bus station downtown and it is very convenient for getting the bus to Vientiane. The owner/manager Tiffany is great to deal with, very helpful and fun. The Silver Reef is a bit quirky in its style with cartoon like figures as the theme but it is basic, clean and safe and a good value in my opinion. There is a shopping area with good modern restaurants a few blocks in one direction and the old shopping market with local fare in the other. This is an excellent place to stay if you are on your way to Laos.

We did not stay at this hotel as we were in transit from Laos and were heading to Chiang Mai via the Udon Thani's airport.

However, we had to spend a few hours at this looking hotel while trying to locate our left-behind luggage on the bus from Laos. Whilst we were anxiously desperate and the heat was exhausting, the lady owner was very friendly in welcoming us into her lobby. She was also instrumental in trying to help us locate the driver and finally finding our lost item.

The reception area is airy, bright and the walls are adorned with chirpy colours. The toilets look immaculately clean, and we had free wifi at the lobby area.

The lady owner is a clear example of a friendly helping hand when one needs it the most in a foreign land!

i stayed 6 nights at this hotel & found it to be a very comfortable & in a great location minutes away from the shopping mall, Mojos restaurant & the Day & Night entertainment market. Its across the street from the bus station, 100 meters to the 7/11 & some of the coolest little Thai restaurants where you can eat real authentic Thai food & have a beer at 5am for just a few dollars. You can have your laundry done just a few doors down for 10 baht an item, clean & pressed! The room was very clean, the ac was top notch, the bathroom was clean, large & great shower/water pressure. I wasn't up early enough for breakfast so pay no attention to cowboy calgary billy bobs comment.(after all he is from Calgary!). Its 650 baht a night which is less than $21US. If you want breakfast all day walk 200 meters to Mojos & play some pool while you wait for your breakfast. Go across the street from Mojos to Angels Massage & get a super massage for less than $10/hr.
I forget the owner ladies name (I have her card but not with me now as I am writing this from my work) but she was very nice & friendly to me & I will definitely be staying there again on my next visit! I have no complaints at all about Silver Reef Hotel. Its one of the coolest coziest places to stay in Udon. if you want luxury & 5 star service then pay for it & quit your bellyaching about this little gem tucked away in a great location & very safe. OK the only thing I can think of to complain about was the busses starting up at 6 or 7 am just moments after I had gotten in. if you stay here maybe ask for a room on the opposite side ot the bus station.

Excellent place to stay in Udon for a few days. Rooms are immaculate and nicely decorated. Non-smoking hotel, which is a plus. Good value at 650baht/night.

No other services in hotel really but laundry service a few doors down and an excellent breakfast at Coffee Corner (turn left out of hotel and take road to left - about 100m down). Only a short walk to the night market, farang restaurants and main shopping complex/department store.
