Very interesting. Showing how the ice once left huge blocks of stone at impossible angles. And it also requires good physics to walk around all of it.

“Well worth the effort”

I loved this place. It's a fantastic place and only saw 3 other people. If Megaliths and Rock art is of interest to you, this place is well worth seeing.

“Step back in time”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 17, 2013

Approximately 75 km from Udon Thani, in Ban Phue District, is the Phu Prabhat Historical Park.

Geologists suggest that millions of years ago the area was covered by glaciers and when these melted the resulting moraine, or debris, caused the strange formations of stone. The area is scattered with unusual shapes of menhir (stand-alone rocks) and archaeologists believe that around the 14th -16th centuries of the Buddhist calendar, Buddhists and Hindu hermits lived here. These men are believed to have prayed, meditated and in general, retreated from the world in their little rock-hewn abodes. Looking at these rocks, the Hoh Nang U-sa in particular, one cannot help but wonder about the tools and techniques, these ancient people used in their building activities.

On some of the rocks one can still see carvings or paintings of men and beasts from many centuries ago, though time and the elements are slowly eroding these. I suspect that some of the Buddha images strewn around the place are of more recent vintage.

The park is well-maintained and the entrance fees of 100 baht per person is a pittance for the opportunity to spend a few hours in a tranquil setting while the mind wanders back many centuries in time.

“Amazing site- go there!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 24, 2013 via mobile

This site is probably under-visited for what it is worth. Nevertheless, it is very well administered (well organized site, helpful staff, lots of explanations in English). Entrance fee is pretty cheap (100 baht/pers)

We made a day trip to this site from Nong Khai and hired a scooter to get there. The 1.5 hour ride to get there is pretty smooth, the road is in great shape and there is little traffic.

A must-see if you are in the area!

“Phu Phrabat Historical Park”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 2, 2013

Phu Phra Bat Historical Park nature reserve is situated high on a mesa which is million of years old and on which we can see dinasuar foot prints, sandstone formations carved by glaciers millions of years ago, evidence of the prehistoric age of human settlement, prehistoric rock paintings, ancient man modified sandstone shelters, boundary pillars of the Dvarvati period of the first milennium and stone Buddhist bas-reliefs and shelters of the Khmer Empire of Thailand approximately 1000 years ago. Phu Phra Bat Park is located north east from Udon Thani City and the route is well marked with signs and takes one hour to drive there from Udon Thani.
