Was planning on spending 2 weeks at the KP Hotel as it was located approximately halfway between the wife’s family village and Udon Thani, saving us about 30 minutes each way of our daily round trip drive. We left after 4 days.

Afternoon check-in found only one young girl working behind the desk…no other hotel staff around. All hotel rooms are located on the top 3 floors of the 5 story hotel so luckily there is a small elevator that barely fit the 2 of us and our luggage. We had a large corner room with 2 windows on the 3rd floor, which had a double bed and a tiny metal framed table and chairs. There’s also a built in desk that the 12 channel TV sits on and it also houses a small refrigerator. Although there are 2 end tables next to the bed there’s no lights on them as there are no electrical wall outlets in the room (only ceiling can lights operated by switch at the door). The only available plug-in is a wall outlet in the bathroom, so bring an extension cord if you want to run a computer, etc.

Breakfast is included, which consists of pre-cooked fried eggs, hot dog type sausage’s and toast…oh, and instant coffee. That’s it!

The hotel has a great big Olympic size pool with slides and adjoining wading pool that is used most days by local kids that pay a small daily fee. We didn’t use the pool but it appeared clean when we took an early morning walk around. There’s also a large gym/exercise room located on the 3rd floor…which we also didn’t use.

You must have your own car/truck when staying at this hotel as there’s no available songtaew (bahtbus), motorbike taxi, or other public transportation close by. To catch a songtaew you must walk a ¼ mile (.43k) to the main road. The weekend we stayed there, they had a large wedding at the hotel and when we returned that evening there was no parking places left, so we ended up having to park across the street. The rest of the week the hotel appeared to have only a few guests, which were mainly Thai.

After four days we gave up and moved to a hotel that we had stayed at last year up in Udon, that was cheaper and a lot better than the KP hotel…although an hour longer per day round trip drive for us.

I found on entering a reasonable entrance hall clean and tidy and reception staff have limited knowledge of english that stretched to 850 baht but any subsequent question was answered with yes although she clearly did not understand. I went to the room and after traveling for 2 days was looking forward to a shower and bed. I got to the room and was impressed by the decor and size of room. I quickly had shower and noticed that the towels where soiled with excrement so drip dried myself of and crawled into the bed. The next morning at 7 am I came down for the included breakfast to find its a mini buffet one slice of bread and one fried egg left on hotplate my other option was several hot dog sausages which I gave a miss. Also there was rice soup but not my thing for breakfast. I asked for a Orange juice to go with my slice of bread but the answer was " no have " that was breakfast 1 slice of bread and a glass of water, nice. I then asked reception if I could have clean towels without mentioning the poo stuck to them and she phoned the housekeeper. I then decided to travel 60km roundtrip to Udon Thani to organise some breakfast. On return to my room I found new soiled towels and my bed sheets been changed and looked like someone was bleeding with with a dozen blobs as big as my outstretched hand. I had enough and had to ask receptionist to see my room and the excrement on towels she agreed it was blood on sheets and had it changed straightway. I then went to the pool to have a cool down and was greeted by a rat snacking out on dog poo next to the pool what a treat. The pool is devoid of any chemicals as its murky and full of mosquito larvae and little creatures called boatmen. As in the title I found this place strange and not value for money I been coming to Thailand for 30 years and have never found any hotel lacking the basics but assume the hotel is used by business guys buying the local rice of farmers and the pool is used by locals as the towns swimming pool. If you looking for basic stuff to be there go 30 km into Udon Thani and give this place a miss.

ahhh, the KP hotel, kumphawapi's newest (and only) full service hotel. i've stayed here many times prior to the completion of my home in this quiet village in the isaan region of thailand.

the hotel features simple yet clean rooms, a restaurant, spa and massage service, room service, a pub, business and conference centers, and a wonderful outdoor swimming pool/lounge area. they can also arrange reasonably priced transfers to and from udon thani international airport (about 50 kilometers).

the offerings at KP's restaurant are predominately thai (and therefore obviously authentic), but they feature both continental and american breakfasts and a few western menu items as well.

though i no longer have occasion to stay at the KP, i have often recommended it to family and friends who visit the area, and i still frequent the pool and restaurant.

the KP is a welcome respite for backpackers who would like a hot shower and a clean bed, but it it's thailand's famous nightlife you're searching for, head south to bangkok, pattaya, or phuket.

notable: the property is situated withing walking distance to the local train depot, and the north/south trains pass by 3 to 4 times daily.

I stayed here solo on a visit to Kumphawapi (30kms south of Udon Thani) in May of 2009. The hotel has its own good sized swimming pool, basic restaurant (nothing elaborate having a small bar, attentive catering staff and management who cared about my opinion.

Rooms were clean with fixtures and fittings to a good standard, reception desk and domestic staff were very pleasant and helpful.

Having read internet forums of people visiting this area of Thailand (Isaan) a common question was "Does anyone know anywhere decent to stay around Kumphawapi" The hotel was 'very' quiet when I stayed and thus I sat with only one other solo traveller having a quiet beer in the bar area. I would go so far as to say that the hotel has little competition in that there appears nothing similar in standard locally.

The hotel is set some 700 metres back (and then right down a side road) from the main mittraphap highway connecting Udon Thani towards Khon Kaen

Do I have any criticisms? no not really

The hotel has its own website and i booked directly with them via email http://www.kphotel-udon.com
