“Best hotel in Phuket”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 18, 2012

From the bracelets of fresh flowers and cold towels upon arrival to the very last day when we were waved goodbye with happy faces and warm greetings, Banyan Tree is an experience in itself! The rooms are gorgeous as is the rest of the hotel, the service is perfect! Food is brilliant and the breakfast is to die for! What a spread! Just remember to take a mosquito repellent as you will need it!

Room Tip: If you want the lagoon view you need to ask beforehand, November to February probably the coolest mo...

We just returned from the Banyan Tree resort. We had our own private villa. It was super clean and the service was exceptional. They keep the resort very clean, turn down service was great and always a little something from the resort as a keep sake was nice.
Breakfest buffet, was always good with a wide variety of foods to choose.
It was great to have two bicycles to ride around the resort, go to breakfast and the beach. That was a nice touch.
I would highly recommend this resort if you want to have a great 5 star holiday.
Also, the beach was great, with a nice variety of restaurants to choose from if you wanted something different.

Room Tip: Rooms near the beach are nice, as it was only steps away.

Two years earlier we were booked for the Banyan Tree but were advised several weeks before to cancel as the majority of it had been booked out for a wedding. We therefore changed to the Sheraton nearby (now the Angsana) and had a great time. We said we would go to the Banyan Tree another time hence our visit April 2012.

We booked a 2 bed deluxe villa which was very spacious but they are not detached villas and we could hear next door - not good as young children are up very early! Added to that some building repairs going on at the stock room building in front of our villa 849 we were moved to a double pool villa which was quieter. Although huge there is a large lobby between the bedrooms which you cannot lock and therefore you have to lock your children in at night and I did not feel comfortable with this even though our daughter is 13. The air conditioning broke one night but they came and quickly fixed it. We felt the room being made up at 2pm and turn down at 5pm one day and 10.10pm another night was not good.

Bikes are available but not allocated per villa, you go on a waiting list hence several times our bikes were stolen! The main Thai restaurant Saffron was the worst green curry I have ever had, chicken with skin and bones still on!

Breakfast was very busy and they did not seem able to cope, maybe it was a busy time of year but being asked to take a seat in the lobby (especially when that is full) doesn't seem very 5 star. It just seemed attention to detail was lacking and we certainly would not return.

My daughter and I were bitten a lot by mosquitoes but my husband not at all so take lots of spray. BBQ in villa was ok, again attention to detail, no rice was brought despite menu including it and they must have done them hundreds of times before, they brought some but by which time we had finished.

It is very quiet there and we would have to go for the Angsana every time due to it having a lot more atmosphere and things to do.

BTGroup, General Manager at Banyan Tree Phuket, responded to this review, April 23, 2012
Dear Mickey B Essex ,

First and foremost, I would like to thank you for bringing to our attention, the problems you have encountered during your recent stay with us. It was a good to personally meet and discuss the various issues while you were still in the resort. Please accept my renewed apologies for these shortcomings and you can rest assured that they have been discussed and the concerned managers are taking necessary rectification measures. I am taking the liberty of repeating parts of the conversation we had during your stay with us on this forum.

Regarding the construction noise you heard around the Deluxe Two Bedroom Pool Villa, it was emergency maintenance work that could not be procrastinated and it was not meant to disturb guests and fortunately, no other guests were disturbed. However, I can understand your annoyance. Although we felt the upgrade to the Double Pool villas was accepted by you and we felt it would prevent any further disturbance, we did not anticipate the issue of the distance of your bedroom to your daughter’s bedroom. Unfortunately, we could not do anything given that all our villas are designed as such. These are our premium villa categories which have received numerous design awards but, it clearly did not meet your needs.

As for the comments on the shortfalls in our F&B. You have every right to expect exacting standards and forgetting to serve rice on time is fundamental. Your feedback about the green curry in Saffron is noted. The locals do enjoy green curry with skin and with bone. Our own standards are green curry with skin but, no bone. Our chefs will do the necessary re-training on the flavors. Regarding busy breakfast, we are aware of this perception and we have taken measures to mitigate the peak times. We allow for our buffet to remain open until 1130 Hrs or even longer, if required. This is done so that there’s sufficient time outside of the peak period to enjoy breakfast.

Furthermore, you expressed your concerns with regards to housekeeping and turn down times. Our standard cleaning hours for guest villas are before 3:00pm and villa turn down services should not be finished later than 9:00pm. As you rightly mentioned, the hotel was and still is running very high occupancies. Please rest assured that I have personally spoken to our Executive Housekeeper to reinforce those time lines.

Dear Mickey B Essex, I would like to thank you not only for writing in this forum but, also for discussing these issues face-to-face so we could make adequate reparation during your stay. While I understand that this experience has been below par, I hope that our meeting on site and this note from me will reassure you to give us another chance. I personally hope that one day we will be able to welcome you back to Banyan Tree Phuket.

Warmest regards,

Sriram Kailasam

I work in the Hotel and pay a lot attention to room amenities, the room amenities in Banyan Tree is very detailed such as different gifts for guests different nights. And there's suntan lotion and mosquitoes prevention lotion/ etc in the room.

Yet, there were rats running in our villa while we were swimming=,= Apologizing gift was given, but still need improvement.

Banyan Tree is consistently rated one of the best hotels in Phuket for all kinds of reasons, so I won't enumerate the usual ones here. What I will say is that one should stay here because of its proximity to my Platonic ideal of a beach: white sand, warm water, lots of little huts serving cheap, fresh (as in, it's still live when you walk in the door) seafood and drinks made with actual coconuts. And best of all: very few tourists, especially compared to other Phuket beaches. There are certainly disadvantages to staying in fancy resort hotels, and normally we eschew the "gated community" thing in favor of a more "local" experience. But face it, you are not really going to get that in Phuket anyway. So if you want to pretend you are all alone on an empty beach while having all the conveniences of a Western hotel, stay here. Oh yeah, and skip the hotel restaurants and eat at Tony's on the beach. Open late.

Room Tip: Want to go big? #850, a villa with its own pool and three bedrooms. We won it in a lottery, so I kn...

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 6, 2012

We returned a couple of weeks ago from a 12 day break at The Banyan Tree and am pleased to say it was one of the best hotel experiences we have ever had. We are a family of 3 (our toddler is 22 months) and we stayed on a 1/2 board basis. I have written 2 reviews as the 2nd one might spoil some of the surprises so take your pick!

First review - hotel brilliant and a deluxe double room pool villa is amazing. Food, staff and experience excellent.

Second more detailed review-

Transfer - pre-arranged to include car seat and takes about 30 minutes. Meeting our transfer was just outside the airport rather than as soon as you walk through customs where there are some transfer people waiting. Ours was a people carrier because of the car seat but you can opt for BMW 7 series.
Check-in - quick and efficient although did feel there was a lot of info to take in at the time when all you want to do is go to the room. Have your passport and credit cards available.
Hotel - well appointed, cared for and nicely furnished. Staff were excellent.
Villa - we stayed in a deluxe double room pool villa which was simply amazing. Kitchen has everything you think you need but don't end up using, 6 person dinning table and they arranged for a high chair to be in the room for us. Sitting area had stereo, tv, dvd (not b/ray though) and plenty of sofa's and chairs, office/tv room was not used except for storing bags (had a large scribble pad for our daughter which was a hit) and should you need power sockets open the draw, 2nd bedroom - 2 single beds and own bathroom with in and outdoor shower, master bedroom was massive and had own tv and dvd with surround sound, bathroom with in/outdoor shower, huge bath and double sink. The pool is lovely (for swimmers it was about 8 stroke lengths!), jacuzzi to one side, outdoor shower, sun beds, dining table and a sala. Pool was spotless. It simply was amazing - the pictures don't give as good indication as reality. I cannot stress enough how good it was.
Turn down - for us was about 7pm (so remember that if you put children down around that time as sometimes we had to turn them down). Thorough and the gifts are a nice touch
In villa barbeque - very nice evening sat round the pool whilst chef cooked nice meal for us.
In villa dining - Freshly cooked food arrives within 15 minutes of ordering. We ate in a lot and didn't have one bad meal. They arrive, set the table and lay out the food and then a call after dinner and they are back to clear up (stayed at other hotels where despite a call the plates remain until room service arrive in the morning which is unacceptable)
Bikes - available from the gym. Only a few have baby seats on the back but they will track one down for you if they don't have one ready and waiting. Small thing but the baby seat gets very hot if out in the sun so take something to lay over it.
Main Pool - very, very nice. A quiet area with a 40m pool with jets off to the side. Lazy river which was fun, a main pool with jets around some of the outside which turn on and off throughout the day, a swim up bar and then a kids pool which had small gradual steps down into a shallow pool. This was great for our daughter who could play with toys and mess about in shallow water. Pools were very clean and towels, drinks and cool down spray is given upon arrival. Floats and magazines are available (1 English, 15 German and 20 Russian magazines). Lots of beds available so never a problem to find a space.
Gym - typical hotel gym with running machines, bikes and weights along with a dance studio. Friendly staff provide water, towels, banana's and flap jacks. Individual tv's for running machines are good but I never find cnn that motivating for a run but they will put on music on the stereo if you ask or make sure you take a ipod.
Golf course - didn't play but looked amazing. Cadies seemed friendly and knowledgeable and the course never had queues although was always busy. Standard appeared mixed on the basis that off the 1st tee people were heading off in all directions! Clubs and equipment were available for hire.
Breakfast - never had any problems with number of people or queues. Birds do come in and steal food of the new people until they realise what the silver plate dishes are for on the table. Plenty of world food available as confirmation that only the British seem to have cereal and toast for breakfast - there are curries, sushi and everything Asian as a reminder! Lovely fresh juices available (OJ is the best I have ever tasted). Only queue we experienced at breakfast was people asking for bananas (more about that later)
Lunch - we ate at the pool bar sometimes (very child friendly) and special mention to Bus who was brilliant. Burger was lovely - food all cooked as ordered at the pool. We ate at the beach alot as well (Tony's) - turn left when you get to the beach. They have high chairs. Sea food was amazing and there are fish tanks with some of the menu swimming around which is great for kids. A fraction of the price of the hotel as well.
Dinner - as mentioned we ate mostly in villa. We also ate in Saffron (see below) and Tre. Tre is amazing and has an exclusive feel. Food was amazing, you get given bread to eat and to feed (not going to spoil all the surprises) and the service is top end.
Bars - we had a drink some evenings in the lobby bar which was nice but it is very quiet. Not a problem if you like a drink when outnumbered by the staff and you will have no problem finding a chair! It felt like people stayed in their villa's in the evening as nowhere was ever busy.
Buggies - always friendly and generally arrived quickly after calling. Sometimes we had to wait for 5 mins but we were on holiday and didn't mind.
Children - We have found the Thai people very friendly and welcoming of children and the hotel especially so. There are a lot of families and the children were well behaved and generally quiet. People without children didn't seem bothered. High chairs available throughout the resort irrespective of the number of children in any one place (ie breakfast). They provide bowls, cups and cutlery if required. The lagoon shop has nappies, wipes and whilst the hotel will provide a jug of milk we bought it from the shop which was cheaper and last longer. I looked in the kids centre which was small and never used when I went in. Not sure what I was expecting but if you want a large area for kids to play and watch tv etc it didn't seem the place. We didn't use it but from what I saw I have seen better in other hotels.
Baby sitting - we used it 3 times. You complete a form at reception before you need them advising of what you need would like them to do. We put our daughter to sleep and then they came but there was the option of feeding them and putting them to bed. We had 2 different people and they were excellent - even tidied the sitting/dining room for us! English was a slight issue but we were confident that if there were any problems they would call us and we could be back (there weren't).
Lucky - at 10am on the grass between where breakfast is and the lagoon arrived Lucky the elephant. He loves banana's (hence the breakfast queue), does a few tricks like waving good-bye and give him some THB and see what happens! Kids love it - he stays around 30 minutes.
Elephants - you can catch the bus to the elephant camp and see more of Lucky and his chums. We did a 15 minute ride on Cindy which was fun (it isn't trekking but it is enough for a 22 month old). The mahout we had took photo's of us. You book up at the hotel and a car will take you down there. We cycled a couple of times as well as it isn't far.
Market trip - we joined another couple for an early morning trip to the market which was a nice experience. A chef comes with you and takes you round. Certainly an experience!
Spa - an hour treatment is actually 1 1/2 hours as 30 minutes is spend relaxing and generally getting you in the mood. Treatments are good - only small negative is English wasn't good so if you have a pain which needs attention or feedback post massage some of the therapists are unable to converse (their English is better than my Thai though all things considered!)
Beach - some review say you need to take a buggy - we always rode our bike and it took 5 mins max. You park your bike in the resort, cross over a road with the smiling security guard and then a short walk through a garden and you arrive at the beach. There are some beach shops so you can buy buckets and spades with a nice selection of restaurants and bars. Beach boys bring you towels. The beach is public but the hotel do a good job of keeping it for guests as much as they can (we saw 2 people who were towel less who weren't part of the hotel but there were no problems). There is a roped off area in the sea which makes it nice and safe.
Lagoon area - we had intentions of going to the other resorts to take a look but we never found the need to other than going to the lagoon shop. Busses and boats run all the time and it is not to large to cycle.

Small negatives (and they really are small things)

Alcohol - this has been mentioned before but basically it is a complete rip off. £7 wine for £40+. Most wine, probably due to availability and storage, is virtually all within 2 years old. Beer is about 200THB whereas you can catch the boat to the onsite supermarket and buy exactly the same for 50THB. I'm happy to pay for the convenience sometimes but if you are staying in a villa it is just as nice to drink there than in the bar. I know people say "if you don't want to pay the prices then don't go to the resort" and I understand that to an extend but when the lagoon shop sells the same items for a fraction of the price the hotel is charging too much.
Half board - they tell you which restaurants you can and can't eat in however for lunch you are limited to Banyan Café or Tamarind. Tamarind is described as "tranquil amid the spa" which is fine but not designed for a 22 month old. You pass "quiet zone" signs on the way to it - there are also no high chairs there. We ate at the pool bar for lunch and spoke to management about the predicament so maybe they will change this going forward. In Saffron we were given a half board menu but we wanted to order off the main menu which was fine - not sure why we were given a half board menu in the first place and some may feel pushed into that being the only option.
Saffron - lovely food and good service but location is strange. One side is the lagoon which you cannot see at night and on the other is the corridor with a carpet shop opposite. Children at the time we went were either running up and down or being consoled by parents trying to get them off to sleep.

Seriously - this hotel is amazing…….go!

Small thing and not related to the hotel but we flew Singapore airlines this time and not BA. Singapore is so much better and if you can fly business the holidays starts whilst you are still in the UK. Makes BA look 2nd class compared.
