“The Hotel Resort that Time Forgot!”
Reviewed November 12, 2013

We had booked for 5 nights, stayed one and moved on! This place on first viewing looks terrific. Wonderful beach location, lots of private bungalows in tropical gardens. On closer inspection however, the resort is really run down and clearly hasn't been repaired or maintained properly for a long time. The bungalows were full of cracks and gaps so consequently were full of creepy crawlies, evostick had been applied messily around toilets to fill in gaps, tiles were falling away from ceilings providing nice walkways for a wide variety of insects, water from bathroom taps came out light green and full of brown rusty bits. There were stagnant pools of water outside rooms attracting mosquitos and so forth. The swimming pool just looked grim, a greenish brown colour with unidentified bits floating on the top. No one was going to swim in that. The place was simply dreadful. It had obviously been splendid once many years ago, but now it was just neglected and sad. Certainly not fit for purpose as a modern day hotel resort. I think the Manager must have regretted coming over to us to ask if we were happy with our rooms. Clearly we were not and we did tell him honestly about our concerns, adding that he really shouldn't be selling rooms that were of this poor quality, let alone charging people £80 a night for the privilege. To give him credit, the Manager did offer to move us to better rooms which we did that same night, but it wasn't much of an improvement. Next day we were up early and found somewhere much nicer to stay which by the way was also cheaper! The other thing to say about the Mooban Talay Resort is that it is quite isolated. We moved to somewhere on the island that had a little more life, not noisy particularly but a few bars and restaurants nearby, which Mooban Talay lacked. I would definitely advise fellow travellers to give this place a miss and find somewhere else to stay on Koh Samet. One day the Mooban Talay Resort may be restored to its former glory. It will be a wonderful resort if they ever achieve that. Until then, stay somewhere else!

I want to start by saying that we stayed here during the summer, so I can't say how things are during peak season. OK, that said, we did not find any major problems when we were there.
I went to Thailand with my wife and her two friends and decided to stay here because of the price and the location. You will have to catch a boat, and the hotel offers a free shuttle twice a day, so make sure you let them know that you will be taking the boat.
When we arrived, it was quiet and our rooms were great; clean and everything we needed was there. Well, almost everything. We did need a kettle, which they gave us right away. Upon walking around, we noticed that the pool was on the small side, but since not many people were there, it was not an issue. Also, the pool is steps from the beach, which is private and beautiful.
The hotel offers a free breakfast, which was not bad, considering it was free. We did pay for lunch and dinner a couple of times and that food was actually much better.
Overall, the hotel is wonderful with great service, a beautiful private beach and decent food.

We visited the place in November 2012, and stayed 4 days.
We were very disappointed and what was supposed to be an idyllic stay on an island turned out to be quite depressing.
Basically, the place must have been nice when it was built but as also noticed by other travelers, it has not been maintained, which creates an odd impression.

The room smelled so badly we had to buy something to perfume the place. It smelled "musty" or "moldy", like humid places that aren't opened to fresh air every day.

Doors don't close properly, especially in the back of the bungalow, where the bathroom opens to the outside where the shower is. As a consequence, mosquitos are most welcome to come in at night as soon as the light is on.

Shower outside can turn out to be a nightmare. No one can see you, however, if you go there at night, you feel very vulnerable to any animal deciding to "attack" you (e.g. mouse or rats).

Swimming pool was just a no-go. I can't remember the color, but it was something between dark blue and grey, so you know straight away that you can't go there. And actually I didn't see anyone there in 4 days.

Restaurant is OK, although it is quite slow and for every meal, we had to order twice as there were always mistakes in the orders (despite the fact we showed the waitress directly on the menu, on the line written in Thai, what we wanted). I suspect that once, the meat in my curry was not chicken but rather rat, as the piece were really small and the meat looked different. However I'd say this can happen in a number of places in Thailand.

Staff was terrible. Very unfriendly and unhelpful (we had to ask once to repair the AC which was not working but they seemed very annoyed; they told us it was fixed but it was still not working, so we had to ask again and they seemed even more annoyed...), and extremely slow/nonchalant/indolent. Watching them taking care of the garden was a poem as it felt like watching a movie at reduced speed. At the restaurant, we could easily wait 5 minutes before anyone came to us although there were 3 waitresses and no other customer... I'm not saying that everything has to be super quick, especially while on holiday, but this can be quite unnerving anyhow.

The beach is very nice however, and enables to enjoy the sun even until late in the afternoon. Towels were provided to use on the beach.

Overall, the worst thing was maybe that it felt like an abandoned village. There were not many tourists so it was at times a but creepy to see all these empty dark bungalows. The problem is that it is 30 minutes away (walk) from the Eastern coast were the main beaches and restaurants are, so it does not attract as many people. Looking back, I think it is ok to be away from the "active" part of the island and go there once or twice, but in that case you need to stay in a very nice place, which was not the case with Mooban Talay Resort. I would not go there again.

The staff is very nice and hospitable. A very isolated resort highly recommended if you wanna stay away from all the loud partying and noise. But it will be nice to check out other options as well as I find it still a bit expensive in spite of what it has to offer!

First: this is ON the island of Ko Samet, NOT on Rayong (mainland), therefore the map is wrong, I hope TA can correct this. If you use Google Map, you'll see exactly where it is: north west of the island, the last resort where you can actually see the sunset.
Second: the professional photo that looks to be taken from a cliff doesn't belong to this resort, other photos are quite accurate.

We had a very nice and professional welcome, the staff was very attentive from the reception to the room to the porter. Our room had a view on the garden, very zen and agreeable atmosphere. The open-sky shower is a fun touch. The room had fresh fruits, and was equipped with umbrella & flash light. In the bathroom, 3 towels each.

The restaurant was very good, we loved the curry with duck and lychees among other dishes. The prices are the same as other good restaurants on the island (Tubtim, Samed Villa) at the exception of the whole sea-bass (x2,5) or the wine (ridiculously priced at $60 to $400 a bottle!). About 1,000 bath for 2, tip included.

When we left, we had to go before breakfast time. The staff very efficiently prepared us two big boxes each. This was very unexpected and kind.

Anything wrong? Well, it is the very last resort so not too much choice to eat anywhere else by foot. Then again taxis are only 150 bath ($5) to downtown.

Room Tip: A row: beach front B row: no view (avoid) C and D rows: garden & pond view, very relaxing.

I visited this resort during Songkran (difficult to find resort). However, I was undable to stay there over night because.
1. Lots of mosqutos in the room.
2. Smell of DDT and made me about to vomit *****
3. Some dirt fell from ceiling on the bed.

I think the beach is nice but facilities are not maintained. Pool and bar are dirty and old. Room is not clearn but can torrerate.

Finally, due to the second reason I had to move to another resort near by.

This resort has a perfect location for nature lovers who wish to experience the charm of Ko Samed's National Park : very quiet at the end of the road to the northernmost part of the island, the nice bungalows made of natural materials with a Bali style touch are perfectly integrated under the shade of huge trees. A lot of birds, including hornbills sometimes although we did not see them this time. At the same time, the resort is also located on a long, white sand beach, and has a very nice and pleasant swimming pool. Going to the village is easy, 10 minutes with the local taxi, or a 45 minutes walk.
