“Perfect for a romantic, relaxing break in Phuket”
Reviewed July 26, 2014

We stayed at M Resort for one week in July 2014, on a Groupon package, and upgraded to the garden jacuzzi villa. We read some of the previous reviews with some concern, but we had a wonderful, relaxing week. If you are looking to come to Phuket for a week of relaxation and romance, and you can get a good deal eg through Groupon, then this place is perfect.

As you may, like me, have read lots of the other reviews (all quite entertaining actually!), I will give my views on some of the issues raised on this forum (btw thanks again to TripAdvisor for letting us all be informed consumers)...

(1) Location - this resort is NOT right on the beach, so if you are looking for a beach holiday, it is probably not the right choice (although they do have shuttle buses to and from the beach). We are more beach than pool people - but we really liked this place as the resort grounds are really beautiful and tranquil - lots of nice flowers, trees, lizards, birds, frogs, etc, which helps with the relaxing vibe, and you can see the ocean in the distance. It's about an hour from Phuket airport. If you definitely want to come to Phuket, then I would absolutely recommend this place (we didn't love Phuket as we found it a bit touristy and there was a vague sewerage smell - not at the resort but everywhere else, eg we were at Kata beach for two weeks before coming to this resort - but this could have just been due to the storms that are common during low season).

(2) Food - we ate a few times at the resort restaurant for dinner, and had lunch one day by the pool - all the meals were good quality, albeit at resort-prices (not street-prices). We also did the pre-booked (better value) two buffets, which were great - lots of variety and good quality. The Gems of Asia meal was particularly good. For a change of pace/budget, try Kooks (turn right out of the resort and you will hit it in 5 mins) or a Mexican place if you get sick of Thai food (turn left at Kooks and walk 5 mins). There is also a mini-mart opposite Kooks where you can get water and a basic Western breakfast to eat in your room (cereal and milk), if you aren't big breakfast people (which we are not). Some of the restaurant items were a little overpriced, eg fruit shakes, but this is to be expected in a fancy resort. NOTE: management might consider adding a food special each day/night, at a slightly lower price, just for variety.

(3) Spa - we had a free 30 minute massage with our Groupon deal, and upgraded for an extra 400 baht each to the full hour massage - I really enjoyed the spa, beautiful setting and very relaxing and luxurious feel. If we were on a different holiday (ie a short break from a stressful job, rather than our nine month world trip), I would definitely have done the 500 minutes for 11.6k baht spa package and gone to the spa every day - more expensive than the street spas, but way more relaxing, and very professionally run. I have been to spas in NY, London and Sydney, and this was very good.

(4) Facilities - the pool was lovely, even for us who are not really pool people. I also went to the gym a couple of times (and expect a medal for this...), and it was better than your average resort gym - lots of machines and free weights plus good aircon and a nice view. NOTE: the management should consider adding gym mats as there were none in there. We also did the free yoga class at 7 am Monday, which was great - management could consider adding more classes, even with a small charge for attending (although 7 am is rather brutal for holiday time : )...).

(5) Rooms - we had a lovely big bungalow, with great views out over the garden and to the ocean. It was very peaceful and relaxing, and well set up. The outdoor jacuzzi is great. NOTE: My two suggestions to management are: (a) as discussed with Ian, please add more thatching to the outdoor bathroom section of room 105 - all the thatching is gone, so other rooms/people wandering around the resort can see in, from certain angles (this made for some very short showers and toilet trips : )); and (b) add bigger mugs or a pot for us tea/coffee-guzzling Westerns - the tea cups in the room are delightfully pretty, but teeny tiny! The wi-fi was ok but not great (which was perfect for a romantic relaxing holiday!).

(6) The "hard sell" - we had read some of the negative reviews of the so-called hard sell so were braced for repeated and aggressive intrusions. Yet none came - we got a free breakfast with Ian, and once he found out we were on a nine month world trip, and largely backpacking along the way (with the occasional luxury stop over via Groupon etc), he just told us to have a nice holiday, which we certainly did. We saw a couple of other people signing up to whatever was being offered, and there were a few people there who were obviously "members", so I suspect it was a tempting offer, just not for people in our position.

(7) Staff - they really were exceptionally friendly and helpful, consistent with our experiences throughout Asia (so far Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand).

So to sum up: we had a really great week here. We didn't love Phuket, but we loved this resort. If you are in a stressful job (and who isn't these days??) and looking for a relaxing, romantic week in Phuket, this is a perfect choice.

Finally: a comment to the owner (whom we didn't meet): your comments on TA are hilarious and very entertaining. However, in today's overcrowded accommodation market, they might be offputting to some potential customers. You have a beautiful resort which is very well-run. I want it to be as successful as possible, so I very respectfully suggest you tone down some of the responses, as most people on TA are just trying to be constructive and helpful to other travellers and also to the resort management (and those that are just venting are obviously doing so and thus disregarded).

We stayed at a garden villa which was very quiet and relaxing, we were upgraded since this was part of our honeymoon trip and our travel agent called ahead to arrange the upgrade as a surprise..
The check in was so smooth and the staff was very friendly, helpful and professional..
The pool was really nice.. The view when you're in the water overlooking this forest was just amazing..
Breakfast buffet was very good.
The only we didn't like was the the hotel's location, a 20 min drive from what's happening in Phuket.. However, we would go again if we had the chance!

Our stay at the Mangosteen was a fantastic experience. On arrival the staff were courteous, helpful and friendly and that remained the case throughout our stay. They were on top of all our bookings. Our room was fantastic and spacious and with views over Chalong Bay. It was serviced in a very unobstrusive way and always well supplied. The central pool area is handy to the bar, restaurant and spa and we enjoyed just lazing or swimming around. Being saltwater just made it that more refreshing. We availed ourselves of the spa on several occasions and there was a wide range of types to choose from. Sure the massages down the road were a lot cheaper but we came to draw breath from a busy work schedule and the environment and service was just what we needed. I like my massages quite firm so make sure you ask for this if availing yourself of the service. The Restaurant and Bar staff were all extremely friendly and the service was prompt and unobstrusive. We took the time to chat and get to know several and this just added to our experience of feeling right at home. Breakfasts contained enough variety to keep one satisfied for weeks. We ate in most nights as we were out most days and while the quality of the food was very good, some more variety would have been appreciated. This resort is at the southern end of the island, is an hour from the airport but we did not come to Phuket for that and the drive too and from was interesting. The Rawai and Na Harn areas are very pretty and delightful and we enjoyed exploring. Take the time to talk to the staff and you will get some great ideas for visits. We went out each day and used a taxi. This can be expensive and on our next trip we will hire scooters to get around. Driving around in the taxi was always interesting but make sure you know where you are going on a map to ensure your driver drops you exactly where you want to go. On one occasion we ended quite a few blocks from our destination. All in all we had a wonderful trip. To Hajo and all the staff we would like to say what an enjoyable time we had. We needed this break badly and wanted to feel pampered and cared for - and this is what we received.

The Mangosteen Resort & Ayurveda Spa describes itself as the "Best kept Secret in Phuket". There is absolutely no reason why an establishment that has honest, friendly, responsive, service-orientated and professional staff should remain a secret. The rooms are spacious and if one is accommodated in the Royal Jacuzzi Villa, one gets to appreciate the spectacular sea-view. The service ranks amongst the best and what stood out for us was when we discovered that when we had the Dinner by the Cellar, we were the only couple and the Head Chef was there to explain each meal in detail. It was private, intimate and romantic but the icing on the cake was when the music played during the dinner featured a few leading South African (we are South Africans ourselves) artists! This is an establishment that does its homework for the benefit and enjoyment of its clients.

Room Tip: Royal Jacuzzi Villas have a better view and are spacious. For couples make sure to make a reservat...

First thing I will mention is that the service is very good, staff is always very friendly and ready to help. Stayed this way for the duration of our 7 day stay, however they seemed understaffed at dinner service. Front desk is always ready to book trips for you and to give advice on where to go, and they helped us quite a lot.

Second and very important, if you like authentic Thai food, don't eat there. Really, don't. Our last day there, we had a late flight and had already checked out, so the only option was to grab dinner at the resort before the airport. I thought, "great, last opportunity for a good Thai dinner!" - but I can taste my disappointment til today. I regret ordering from the Thai menu, for the price of which, I could have had 3 seafood dinners at Number 6. :) I might have had a better meal if I picked a nice steak instead.

Gorgeous resort with trees and wildlife all around - birds, frogs, bugs, lizards! Lots of them!

The location itself, takes you quite close to Rawai Beach and Coral Island. BUT it is 1 hour or so away from the airport, 45 mins away from Patong and Town. This is absolutely fine though if you are the type to stay in and enjoy the resort facilities, otherwise, the taxi fares to anyway will drain your wallet slowly and steadily. I think I came for a different sort of trip and simply should have picked a location closer to what I wanted to do.

During our stay there, we met some strong winds that was enough to blow away parts of our ceiling. Garden Room ceiling, not bedroom, so it wasn't that big of a deal. We received free massage sessions when the staff discovered it.

One thing I do take as a full negative point against the resort - is that they started renovations of a neighboring villa during our stay. This was a villa right in front of our front porch. 7 or so workers there. They started drilling and banging on nails at 8 AM. No good at all.

Finally, wifi access was spotty. Works in the lobby, drops in the room. It is free though, so can't complain.

So - to summarize, the resort is just beautiful. The staff is lovely. But it just isn't right for me and the way I like to spend my time. I do not doubt that many others will love it though. (Just do not eat Thai food there. Don't do it.)

Arriving at Mongosteen Resort after been around the beautiful happy people in Thailand was disappointing as the staff were cold and arrogant. We had one dinner at the resort which was very tasty. The pool was refreshing, we had to change our room because of plumbing.
The couple of snakes roaming the gardens made for a interesting stay.
We had a trip for a elephant ride donated by the resort, I wonder if they have been for a ride, the elephant took us up past a rubbish dump stopped there, the hander try sell us trinkets, the ride was 10 minutes.
There is a German Butcher down the lane from the resort who makes fabulous meats and Kook Restaurant was very cheap and tasty meals We enjoyed our drive back to the Airport with Mr Lee taxi also down the lane

I have to agree with the previous review, we also had a voucher and had read earlier reviews with concern. However we couldnt fault any part of our stay at the resort. Everyone was friendly and extremely helpful and if we didnt have a child with chronic lung disease we would have signed up with Mangosteen. The resort was clean with beautiful views out to sea one week is not enough!
