“Mixed feelings......”
Reviewed September 27, 2012

We too bought a voucher for a very reasonably priced week here and then upgraded to a Jacuzzi Suite. We really couldn't fault the Thai staff during our stay who were polite, attentive and helpful. With regards to the sales team, our voucher didn't commit us to any timeshare presentation so we declined the offer and remained under the radar. We were not subject to any hassle following this decision and had very little interaction with the sales guys. However, they are a major fixture here - they do drink at the bar and eat at the restaurant. If I had of been subjected to any demands this would have made me feel uncomfortable. My partner did witness an argument between one of the sales guys and a couple who had declined the offer of a timeshare however we kept well out of it - we were happy to remain incognito! Our room was lovely and spacious however when we arrived the was a definite smell of damp, as if the room hadn't been ventilated properly. We assumed it would clear up over the week but it didn't. We bought some incense sticks from the hotel shop to try and mask the smell and on reflection, probably should have complained and not been so diplomatic. It was a shame really because the actual room was clean apart from a dusty headboard and it therefore detracted away from the hard work of the cleaning staff. By the time we left the sheets and remaining clothes in our suitcases had a slightly damp odour to them. We stayed in Room 303 and the only other issue we had was some form off electrical spark every time the fridge recharged. This would happen several times a day/night where could see a flash of light behind the fridge. We reported this to the staff.

The food for us was the real let down here. I note that other reviewers rated the food highly which proves that reviews like this are purely subjective and reliant on expectation, past experiences, culinary knowledge etc. We had some excellent meals out whilst over here and the quality of the hotel food just did not compare. We went to the Thai buffet night which left us both feeling jaded. The food was quite stodgy, not like I perceive Thai food to be. We had a superb meal out at the Boathouse and frequented DaVinci's down the road in Rawai too - lovely fresh Italian food which was a welcome break from Asian cuisine.

The pool area may be smaller than average but it is more than made for by the beautiful setting. No complaints in that department. Yes the hotel is isolated but we were aware of this before we booked and anyone that has done their research should know this. The road does need to be re-surfaced but this has not impacted on my rating of this hotel.

This hotel in my view is a 3 star, comparable to the other hotels I have stayed in over the world. Although there is room for improvement, in light of the money we spent to stay here (320 GBP) we can't complain too much.

We found our stay here really enjoyable. We went to the Mangosteen as part of the $199 promotion and we were very impressed. John had breakky with us and told us about the resort. At no time did we feel under any pressure to buy. As my parents are members of DAE we didn't become members as we are can use their membership. However, we certainly will recommend it to others. The room, outdoor shower, service, people, breakkie and pool were great! The location was fantastic, set up high on a hill amongst lush vegetation. We ventured down to the local village several times to eat or buy an icecream. The Thai people are extremely friendly and generous. One family made my boy a hat. We hired a driver for the day (log onto Phuket.com for 1200 baht for 5 hours) and we saw everything around Phuket we wanted to. We also booked an excellent tour through Phuket.com called the 4 in 1 Siam safari tour. Well worth it and highly recommended. They provided hotel transfers and the tour was both informative and fun -particularly the elephant ride! The spa is BRILLIANT -very professional and top notch. My husband and I both used the spa. Well worth it! I would have no doubt returning to the haven that is the Mangosteen.

We too stayed on the promotion voucher & we couldn't have enjoyed it more. It was a wonderful week. We had the presentation from Gavin & he's a lovely guy but we had to run off to the dentist before we could get the price of the membership so we still haven't found out about it yet... The Resort itself is divine, the rooms, the pool area, the gardens, the staff, the spa - all top notch. We hired a car for the week & got around quite a lot & found that the position was great for places we wanted to see. Nai harn beach is gorgeous. We had dinner at the Resort on Thai night & I was really surprised. My husband & I really like street food & don't like eating at 5 star resorts as we find the Thai food less authentic. Well the chefs did a wonderful job & the food was superb. Had breakfast there one morning too & also room service one day & both were great. The viewsa from the rooms are great as the resort is up on a hill. You can sit in the pool & look at all the yachts in Chalong Bay. Gorgeous !!! Oh & the bed was absolutely fabulous. I slept like a baby for the whole week. The place is really really quiet too so there was no one waking you up at all hours.

Room Tip: They are all great

Like some other posts we were concerned upon reading some of the reviews on this site but decided to go ahead anyway. Our only complaint is that when we got the $199 deal it was not clear that there was an expectation to attend a presentation. Rather it was just noted as the deal was to "promote" the resort. May need to be clearer up front re this in future. Nothwithstanding this we took part in the presentation, felt no pressure from Ian or Richard, and were pleasantly surprised at the offer. After seriously considering for a couple of days we decided it was not for us at this point and declined. Again - no pressure, our decision was respected. The resort is a great base for getting out and about and seeing the southern part of the Island. Great advice from Michael and Ian about what to see and do, and best ways to get around. Much appreciated guys. Local Thai staff are friendly and really add to the experience. Overall a great week. Kim and Kathy Perth

Apologizes for being a bit late on this review.
We stayed at the Mangosteen resort during the last week of July on a Our Deal $199 voucher and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We found all the staff to very helpful and insightful. We enjoyed several dinners (Thai night) and breakfast at the resort..... All top notch! Like most people we took advantage of daily happy hour by the pool...... A great way to unwind and/or meet and mix with other guests and staff.
Some previous reviews have commented on the location of the resort....... We didn't really find this an issue at all. From the shuttle bus to the local beach, to taxi, scooter, and even walking we found getting around to quite easy. We visited Nai Harn beach on our first afternoon and loved it; nice beach, good value for money restaurants, and an amazing view..... We made sure it was the place we spent our last afternoon in Thailand.
After a couple of days sussing things out we hired a scooter and that really gave us a chance to venture out and see different areas of the island. My wife was very hesitant about getting on the back of a scooter, but we were very careful and putted around at 50km/hr and below, wore our helmets and didn't ride after dark.
Highlights of the trip definetly include a trip out to Racha Island (snorkeling, lunch etc), Phuket city markets, Simon Caberet (for a laugh), and the Sea Gypsies (well worth it!).

As for the presentation by staff we didn't really find this a hassle at all. We were well looked after by Ian (good ol cockney lad) and after talking with him on day 2, we caught up again on day 6. We decided to join as members but realize that it's not for everyone. We certainly didn't feel pressured and even if we didn't join the holiday club, we were already taking about coming back for another holiday (so it just made sense I guess). Please don't be put off by negative posts..... Your holiday is what You make of it....... Get out and see the sights, experience the culture, and remember you have a beautiful resort to come back too to unwind and relax!

We have just returned from a fantastic week at the Mangosteen. We participated in a great cooking class, amazing massages at the Ayurveda Spa, and received great tips from the staff on eateries and sightseeing. Hajo and Rose have an amazing group of staff who are friendly helpful and fun. James and Mac make the pool bar rock each day and is a fun bunch. Natty is fantastic with helpful hints of what to do and where to go, as were all the reception staff. Special thanks to Richard, Ian and Michael for showing us around both in and outside the resort. We have taken up the opportunity to become members and are looking forward to returning to this resort and other resorts through the membership benefits. The food within the resort was exceptional especially the Thai Buffet on Wednesday night and 5 Tastes of Asia on the Friday night. Joy, Rod along with the group of chefs and staff in the restaurant made eating an experience. There are also a number of great eating places outside of the resort including Tex Mex and the Sea Gypsy Market for an amazing seafood experience. Thank you to everyone who made our experience so memorable ... see you all again soon.
