The Expat is a small 46-room low-rise hotel situated at the end of a long (unnamed) soi off Rath-u-Thit Road. The entry to the soi is immediately adjacent the Taipan Nightclub just north of the Rath-u-thit intersection with Bangla. The Expat describes itself as a budget hotel and “a quiet and tranquil oasis right in the heart of the pulsating nightlife of Patong Beach”.

It is a claim that is well founded as I found for myself when staying on my most recent visit (February 2010) during “high season” when I need to relax over an extended weekend following a hectic conference in Singapore.

Welcoming, friendly and obliging staff (Anne at reception – who calls all males, “honey” - is ‘tops’ … flattery at my age gets you anywhere), clean and comfortable (if small) rooms with all you need, a great little café, internet, an adjacent and sociable bar (covered but ‘open-air’), massage service near the good sized pool and a laundry “at the door”.

I thought the rooms might be too cramped for two but an Australian couple in their 60’s were in the poolside room next door and more than coping with having their 19-year old daughter bunking down on a portable bed as well.

After all, with a small patio to sit out on during the day and so much to do in Phuket, what would you be doing inside anyway?

The Expat is one minute from Bangla, two minutes from Jungceylon, and five minutes from the beach – what more does one need?

I rate it really good value for money and I only hope that like other smaller, low-rise hotels, The Expat can survive the rush to erect even more monolithic high-rise resorts in Patong!!

Booked two rooms, stayed 3 nights with a group of friends (3guys & 3girls) few days ago. Room size is OK for 3 person in each room, bed a little hard but clean enough, no amenities in bathroom but there's hot shower. A small pool but the water is milky. Quiet location with a min walk to the nightlife, shopping and restaurants, 5mins to the beach.
Hotel reception and people around are friendly, but 2 weird incidents on the 1st day we checked in, the guys were being told to stay on the 2nd floor while my female friends were told to stay on the 3rd floor, I don't know why!! And 10mins after we settled down, we (the guys) were told to change to the room next door, the staff said they have given us tthe wrong room.. (I don't see any difference between this two rooms)..
Other than this experience, It was a nice pleasant stay. Recconmend for those who just need a room to sleep in, value for money.

if you are single guys looking for the typical Thai holiday this is the place for you!!Fantastic location, staff very friendly and helpfull. pool area is excellent, restaurant seves good cheap food, massage serice is sensational, laundry done the way mum does it and reasonable fees for bike hire.Cant speak highly enough for a budget hotel, if you dont like the expat, pack your bags and go home because you wont enjoy Thialand. Joiner friendly and many great people arond the pool or in the bar to exchange ideas and stories. Will be staying there again without hesitation, buy remember more for single guys than couples

I stayed there June 2009 for two weeks and have only good things to say about it. This hotel is ideal for single guys, groups of guys and mongerers in general. Very guest friendly. Guests have to leave ID at reception for security.

This is not the hotel for you if you are looking for 5 star luxury as the rooms are quite basic. Big bed, TV, electronic safe, en suite wet room/toilet. Mini-bar fridge, air-con and ceiling fan.
Very clean, towels and bed linen changed every day, room cleaned every day. On site bar/restaurant provides wide selection of western and thai food at very cheap prices.
Also if you are put off by guest's lady friends coming and going during night or around the pool during the day then maybe not for you.

Best things about this hotel are;
The pool area, great for meeting people and relaxing.
Location, 100 metres from Bangla but also very quiet with virtually no noise from bars/discos.
Price, can usually get a discount if you email them.
Staff, very friendly and helpful, from reception to bar to cleaners, always happy and smiling and friendly towards guests.

Worst thing about the hotel is wi-fi is not free and costs 500 baht for 7 hours. Altho coverage is excellent.

I met many people at Expat during my stay and no-one had a bad word to say about it. I would definately stay again as it has everything I need.
