“Overrated and overpriced, but a comfortable stay in a great location”
Reviewed May 4, 2013

I didn't stop hearing great things about this hotel from fellow Aussies before finally giving in and booking it.

The hotel is in a pretty unbeatable location in Patong if you're there to have a great time and enjoy the crazy nightlife (which we were). It's literally only minutes' walk (10 at most if you're really slow) to Bangla Road, where it all happens when the sun goes down. It's also just across the road from Patong Beach.

The hotel's also got a really nice pool area, but being so nice, and of course, having the crowd-pleasing swim-up pool bar, it does get quite busy, so we preferred to spend time on Patong Beach instead when we wanted to be near the water.

Our room was spacious enough and well-equipped, but we basically just had a close-up view of a palm tree from our balcony, which was a bit disappointing considering the room wasn't cheap. Still, it was a clean, well-kept room and the bed was comfortable.

Staff were a bit hit and miss. We encountered some very helpful staff, for instance, the lovely staff at the lobby bar, but then we encountered some not-so-helpful staff, such as those who made a mix up of our room bill and said we couldn't get late checkout even though it was included in our rate (we did get it in the end - after speaking to a different staff member).

All in all, this hotel is pretty good and in a great location so I'd recommend it, but it's not competitively priced when you look at other similar standard hotels in Patong. So just be sure to do your research and don't necessarily give in to the hype before booking.

We stayed here for 4 nights (originally 5 nights but changed our minds); during the Thailand New Year (Water Festival). We had a pool access room which was directly next to the reception halls - you could wave to people checking in if you wanted to. Not overly private but not so bad as we had the corner room that was more hidden.

Overall, it was a well fitted resort with the finish of a 4 star resort. However, we encountered check-in problems on our arrival - as they had down only 1 person staying in the room, even though I was travelling with my partner and the two resorts on either side of our stay had a 2 person stay - so confused how they got a 1 person stay. They were very rigid about this and showing emails highlighting both my and my partners names to reservations did nothing to change their minds. This lead to a daily issue with our buffet breakfast being included in the room price only for myself - and then no people included on the second day (which we had to speak to the front desk daily about). Each morning we wondered what problem there would be - when I asked to speak with manager an older man came out listened to my concerns and then the desk manager came to complete the complaint process (very strange). Importantly, the 2nd desk manager was very nice about this but it didn't change anything - you got the feeling that she was following the resorts 'policy'. We addressed this issue politely and respectfully - as we are not aggressive people and on holidays anyway - but left feeling this was not handled very well from an executive level.

The rooms were very small; and although the pool access was a delight to have - it was not amazing. My finance had a terrible nights sleep as the beds were so hard. Again, we looked for the positives as we didn't want to spend our holiday complaining. By the third day we had to ask our cleaning service for more toiletries - as these were not replaced daily. We found ourselves avoiding the resort and filling our days with activities. Something that we are not generally inclined to do - usually having a balance of resort and activity time.

The breakfast (after always having to address the issue that we don't need to pay for it again) was well equipped and enjoyable. Although this is clearly a popular resort with lots of people (no problems there) - the staff were always gracious and the fresh eggs were cooked beautifully. The rest of the food, however, was average; room service food was not nice and the main dining restaurant was average - compared to other restaurants in Patong Beach.

The location is superb - you walk out and you are in the heart of Patong Beach. The grounds were not so inviting (compared to other resorts we have stayed at in Thailand). We actually spent the days at our previous resort (Baan Laimai) as the surroundings are much better. In hindsight we shouldn't have checked out of this resort. It shows that paying more does not always mean you get better service or atmosphere. They are only a block apart, but the overall feel is completely different.

The main concierge was a beautiful man; and it was lovely to be greeted by him and the staff - again, it appears that once you interact with the ground staff you experience a totally different level of warmth and a genuine desire to make you smile. Unfortunately, the top down executive policy and feel taints this.

At the end of the day, you are in beautiful Thailand and the people are beautiful. We tend to go with the flow - but these aspects just meant this resort was not a good fit for us. For the price we would stay elsewhere (and are) next time.

Room Tip: Pool access made a huge difference; as the rooms were quite small and this opened it up a bit.

It's our 5th visit to Thailand second time staying at this hotel. We began our 7 week tour of thailand at this hotel for Songkran in early April. We have stayed at other "bigger" hotels i.e Amari Coral, Diamond Cliff, Moevenpick and whilst you shouldn't compare a 5 star with a 3.5/4 star hotel its hard to go past the Banthai!! Great location, clean tastefully designed rooms, 3 pools all with swim up bar (pool 2 or B is the best), amazing complex facilities (hair salon, nail salon, souveneir shop, italian restaurant with take away pizza's pharmacy, starbucks, money exchange), the beach is literally accross the road, checkin is pleasent, staff very friendly especially the concierge team very attentive always asking how you are, where your going etc they have great tips for travellers wanting advise on tours or anything really!!! You may read other reviews mentioning a mostly young crowd or beds being hard both are true but there are 3 pools to choose from in which to choose your crowd & the beds are hard all through thailand I have found. I almost forgot to mention the breakfast.... Hands down BEST breakfast as far as choice goes. Mr Egg = awesome!!! We finish our 7 week self guided tour of Thailand back at the Banthai later this month and Im really looking forward to "going home".

We really liked this hotel. Service was great, the rooms were really good. The location is perfect if you want to be where the action is. Shopping food and entertainment. Great selection of pools adjoing the 1st floor rooms. Poolside staff Tim and Jack did great job of keeping us all well watered and fed.

Room Tip: Top floor is great value. But if you wantto spend the extra for pool access it would be well worth i...

I visited a lot of other resorts whilst in Thailand as we had a number of friends there and although some of them where of a higher standard ie newer with larger rooms I can't go past the experience at the Ban Thai. We had 3 rooms booked and were upgraded to the Villa for 5 nights OMG it was amazing . Kai and the breakfast room staff became our friends, so much so my 15 year old daughter shed a tear when it was time to say goodbye. All the staff were extremely friendly, housekeeping was great, security was awesome. The position is perfect if you are choosing you Patong you are going for all that it has to offer so Ban Thai is perfectly located in the midst of it all but set back so you can retreat from it if you wish. I would happily return even if it was just to visit Kai and the breakfast room staff! Kapunka!

Room Tip: Villa was amazing!!! Ground floor lobby rooms had great pool access

This hotel is 31/2 star at best. Smallish rooms, shower in a bathtub, little storage etc. Having a large open lobby there is no respite from the heat until you get to your room. The 2 pools are very shallow and very warm, providing no cooling. The reception staff are young and inexperienced. On the upside- great location to the beach road, and Bangla Rd side of things. Breakfast buffet is ok, if you like cordial type orange juice.. Spend a bit more and stay at the Busakorn Holiday Inn for a more memorable experience.

This was our third trip to Phuket but our first to this lovely hotel. From the moment we arrived the service we received was outstanding. We were treated to an upgrade to a Pool Jacuzzi room for our first three nights which was a real and unexpected treat. Didn't mind having to move to our booked room for night four, it was hardly an issue. All the staff were friendly and very helpful and although some spoke better English than others, we had not one problem with anyone. The rooms were very comfortable and also well serviced. The bed was exceptionally hard and that would be my only draw back but it is a very minor one. There were 5 groups of us staying here and everyone has said they would definitely return and stay here again. The position of this hotel is perfect, smack in the middle of the madness, however whilst on hotel grounds you would never now there was anything going on outside the walls. We will be back and we will be more than happy to stay here again and to recommend it to any and all of our friends. It is a beautiful place to stay and ticks all the boxes. Do yourself a favour and go and listen to the band that plays at The Port every night. Lily is a tiny little Thai lady with one almighty voice and she can rock a Gunners or an ACDC song to its core, they are awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!

Room Tip: If you want to treat yourself the pool Jacuzzi room is something I would probably look at, just that...
