My wife and 2 nos. boys aged 13 and 10 years originally booked to stay at "The Haven Lagoon Condominium, Patong for 9 nos. days over Christmas 2013.
When we arrived at "The Haven Lagoon Condominium" they had over booked with no vacancies. They then redirected us to the other side of the road to "Mochic Residence" who were told offered identical accommodation at no extra cost.
The "Mochic Residence" was a comfortable flat with a living room leading to 2 nos. bedrooms. The 3 nos. A.Cs. were quiet and efficient, the beds were comfortable. There was a flat screen television with several English speaking channels including BBC World Service. The flat had 3 nos. bathrooms with efficient showers and plenty of hot water. The flat was equipped with free Wi-Fi, 24-7 which faded at times but was usable.
The kitchenette was the weak link situated in the living room which included a kettle, a toaster, microwave, and 2 ring hob. The sink was only fed by cold water. There were only metal pans so there was no facility to cook using the microwave. There were no knives included but upon request we were supplied with them. We only had breakfast in the flat so if anyone is planning to be solely self catering this flat would not be suitable.
The other negative side of this flat is it adjacent to a busy main road and the noise of the traffic continued all night.
When we arrived the management asked for a return of key deposit of 2,000.00BHT (£40.00) We refused as it was not part of our original agreement. Upon leaving they tried to blame us for breaking a bedside light for which we were not responsible. If we had paid the key deposit we doubt whether we would have received our deposit back. We believe this practice is common in Thailand in order to make extra money.
On a positive note the staff were helpful and when we requested additional coat hangers, knives and beach towels they were supplied.
On a general note we wanted to hire scooters to travel around but when we tried to hire we found out that the hirers do not do not supply insurance. Instead they ask their clients to sign that they will be responsible for 50,000.00 BHT ( £1,000.00) in case of accident or theft. We found this unacceptable as the only parking is in the street and we were apprehensive of our responsibility to third party if we had an accident.
We then tried to hire a car. The hired cars are covered by insurance but the hirer insists that he holds our passports during the hire period & would not accept a copy. We are told that this is a way to try to extort extra payment when the car is returned by blaming the hirer of causing damage to the car that had already occurred prior to the hire. This situation is very difficult to argue when the hirer holds your passport & will not give it back until payment is agreed. There is also the issue of the security of the passport while in the hirer's possession. Finally we opted for taxis which were no more expensive than hiring after a price negotiation but less convenient than using our own transport.
