I enjoyed my stay at Sunsets, mainly because of the affordable price, the friendly staff and fun bar.
It's a small place and it's easy to get to know the mix of expats, staff (local and expat) and guests who hang out in the bar at night, with beer and karaoke as the big draws. Once a week there's live music. I can't imagine that staying in the thick of Patong would feel as personally welcoming.
Sunsets is a couple of kilometers outside town, up on a ridge in a forest, but the staff arranged for a motorcycle/moped to be delivered, at a good price, so I didn't even have to go into town to rent one. If you're not comfortable riding on two wheels in the heavy traffic you'll encounter in downtown Patong, you'd have to get a taxi to go anywhere, and they're not cheap.
The room was nothing special - a little dark, a little musty, but comfortable, clean and large. In Patong, at the price I paid, it was a good deal. The karaoke was a bit loud in the evenings, but then my room was right below the bar and other rooms should be quieter.
I got the impression that the management is working to upgrade the place, but if you're picky and have high expectations on every little thing, this place is probably not for you.
