“New wing is a MUST!”
Reviewed August 20, 2010

My other half and I stayed at the Patong Merlin for our first time to Phuket. We had been to Bali before so knew what to expect as far as the bartering, the hassling etc went. We found it not too bad, in general we found a friendly smile and hello doesn't mean you have to buy something and the constant "Hello, you want singlet? T-Shirt?" etc it just becomes part of the soundtrack that is Patong.

As far as the hotel goes, we stayed in the old wing for 5 nights and the new wong for 6, after reading reviews on this site about them. In the old wing, we got two bed pushed together which was incredibly annoying and the air con was very loud. I found sleeping quite difficult these nights, however these things didn't bother my boyfriend, I must just be a lighter sleeper! It was 600Baht extra per night to upgrade to the new room and we had almost gotten used to the 'quirks' of our old room, but thought why not upgrade, it can't be any worse!

All I could say was WOW - was my boyfriend happy I pushed for us to upgrade.....it was like being in a different hotel. We had friends there at the same time who stayed at the Merlin Beach which was GORGEOUS, and once we had upgraded to the new wing, they said they would stay at the PM for sure the next time. New bathrooms with a massive bath, perfect for soaking away the days aches after spending hours walking around in thongs! New TV, comfy comfy king sized bed and afternoon sun (we were in room 7301).

Next time we go to Thailand it will be this hotel and the new wing for sure! In fact, I think we may even spring for the Pool Access Rooms, if you book early enough and get the early bird discount how could you say no???

Pools were good, clean, easy to get a drink and not overrun by kids.

Breakfast was standard, what you would expect and no different to any of the other reviews.

Can't review any of the restaurants as the quality and price outside the hotel was too good.

All in all, good hotel, nothing more or less than I imagine most others would provide, but the new wing is an absolute MUST!

My wife and I stayed at Merlin for 10 nights in Late July 2010, we have been there 4 times before but not for about 4 years. We were very confused about rooms and the new rooms like Deluxe pool view and Pool Access rooms. I understand that Superior pool view is old block down the side of the pools standard rooms are in main block above reception and bar area. But once we got there and see that there is a whole new wing out where the tennis court used to be it was all clear. We were in a group of 26 people and most were in old rooms in main block they all thought those rooms were fine to stay in, maybe a bit noisy if you were over the bar area but never that bad. WE meet people in Pool access rooms which are just the same as deluxe poolview above them but are noisier than our room. The staff turns on water fountains at about 9am after pool cleaning and these are very noisy. They do get turned off at 7pm and if you are in a pool access room all the noise from the poll area echoes into your room or your sitting area outside you room. A few annoying people play there Ipods with speakers at the pool area which I find disturbing and would be loud in pool access rooms. We were in room 7311 which was really nice, huge bathroom with huge bath, lovely shower. Bed was not too hard and lots of pillows. Nice balcony. Breakfast was good but not really great but better than Kata Beach Resort we stayed at next. Staff was generally very nice and helpful English was normally OK accept that you can always find a staff member who can speak English if you need one.

So overall great hotel, nice staff, close to shops (especially Otop markets out the back over the road) handy to restaurants either front or back. I would recommend this hotel highly

Our family of four (Wife & I, son 15 & daughter 17) stayed at the PM from June 24 to July 9. This is our 4th time to Phuket and third time at the PM. Arrived at about 5:30 p.m. so check in was smooth, the front desk girls were friendly and we went straight to our rooms. Stayed on the ground floor in rooms 5104 & 5105 which were ok. We requested 5106 & 7 as they were the interconnecting rooms we had last time but no luck this year. Rooms are still nothing special but quite comfortable and clean with all of the usual things you expect in a hotel. The bathrooms have had a make over since we were here last. The beds are pretty hard but strangely from what I hear that seems to be the case in a lot of Thai hotels and was the same down the road at the Patong Beach Hotel. We had a couple of maintenance issues with the hinge falling off the door on the cupboard that hides the refrigerator and the room access cards failing to work. In both cases the maintenance people came out and fixed them promptly. The breakfasts are the usual large hotel buffet with pretty much everything you could want. Room service was good as was the service around the pool. Speaking of the pools, it is the setting at the PM that keeps us coming back. Three large pools set amongst gardens and palm trees. You really can forget that 100 metres away is the madness that is Patong. They have also built a new wing. The ground floor rooms have direct access to a pool and the rest of the rooms look down on the pool which has a swim up bar. I’ve heard the rooms are very nice but didn’t get to see inside one myself. Frankly I’m comfortable with the other old part of the hotel. I’ve read some reviews complaining about the rudeness of the staff but everyone from the house keeping staff to the waiters, gardeners and even the guys that clean the pool were very friendly. I suspect you get back what you give a lot of the time. A smile and an attempt at a few Thai words seem to go a long way in my experience. There is wi-fi available but we didn’t have a lap top so had to use the old PC’s at 100 baht for 30 minutes. These units are pretty old and slow and need to be upgraded. You can get better cheaper access down the road at the internet cafe's. Overall the PM is a good value three star hotel with great gardens and pools in a good location close to markets, restaurants and bars. You take a couple of steps out of west end of the hotel and you are on the beach. Step out the east side and you are at the OTOP market. It’s a little old but that’s kind of what I like about it. It’s like settling into an old armchair that’s a little bit frayed around the edges but very, very comfortable and if you do want to go up market you can book into the new wing.

Having been shown a room with 2 single beds pushed together with a bump in the middle we were then shown another room that was old, smelly and with mould in the bathroom. After an unpleasant discussion with the manager about the unsuitability of the rooms shown, we agreed to pay extra for our 6 night stay and be upgraded. Not a good start to our first visit to this hotel. The pictures of the rooms on the website are not of the rooms first offered to us and our friends. Lucky we asked to see the rooms before we paid for them. The rooms we finally were offered were of a high standard modern tvs and updated décor. There were other tourists there who experienced the same problems we had.

"Patong Merlin Hotel"
Well what can i say! The staff are very welcoming and polite. This was our second time to Patong but the first time we stayed at this resort. Will definatly be returning to Patong and staying at Patong Merlin Hotel again. We stayed in the delux pool view room. Our family consits of 2 adults and 3 children. Unfortunatly we couldnt stay in the pool access rooms as our youngest was under 12 years of age. We had interconecting rooms. There is seperate baths and showers which was great. You can relax in the bath and watch TV or a movie at the same time as the walls are glass! "Very classy"
Patong Merlin Hotel - New wing is a MUST. You will love it :-)
Great Resturants to eat at - Roma, Sabai Sabai and the Beach resturant. Enjoy your stay

Just returned after 8 nights. Stayed in a deluxe poolside roon in building 7 -this is in the newer wing & the ground floor poolside room means your patio is next to the pool so you just jump in or sunbath or drink beers direct from your own fridge -magnificent. Great for teenagers but dangerous for young ones who need supervision.
The location is excellent -front door opposite the markets & back entrance right on the beach at the southern end of Patong beach.
Previously stayed at the Patong Beach Hotel but this is a classier number with an equivelent great location.
