“Loved it”
Reviewed August 21, 2007

Our party of 14 (8 adults, 4teens & 2 kids) have just returned from this resort. From the welcoming drink to checking out, we had a great time. I was surprised to be told that 80% of the hotel was occupied by Australians. The service was first class and the teens and kids were all made to feel really important. They were never overlooked when ordering a drink or lunch meal for themselves. They also had internet access which made the teens very happy, as well as pool tables, table tennis, big TV and lots of games. On the rare rest day we had, lounging by the pool was awesome,. We loved getting the cars into town and the tuk tuk back. We all got the rooms that we booked and were very pleased with them and the views that we had. To sit on the balcony and look out over the pool and The Andaman Sea was very relaxing. A big thumbs up to the massage people on the left hand side of the beach near the stairway. Great massages 300bht, we went every 2nd day and they spoke and understood quiet a bit of English. If you stay here go up the stairway to The Good View Restaurant, Lunch or Dinner it is great food and very cheap. The only hiccup we had was the night we had dinner at the Tri Trang Seafood Restaurant, they had a staff shortage so the meals were very slow, but very good food. They were very apologetic and lets face it that can happen anywhere. All in all I think the hotel has something for everyone and I would definetly stay there again.

After staying at the Patong Merlin 4 years ago, we thought we would give the newer Merlin Beach a try. We stayed for 10 nights with our 21 month old son.
From the moment we arrived to the moment we left the staff were friendly and wonderful. The resort accomodates families very well. We had no problems getting a cot, highchair, and playtime. Our son loved the Bam Bam Club and playground. The pools were devine, spoilt for choice which to spend all your time in. Pool 3 is ideal for couples as it was much quieter in that area of the resort.
The only minor downside is the distance from Patong (if you feel the need to leave the hotel). The 200baht Tuk Tuk or taxi each way can soon add up. We did use the resort shuttle several times. You could easily spend your entire time at the resort, the food and drink prices are what you would expect to pay at a resort.
We indulged in an afternoon of pampering at the Merlin Spa, which was just heaven.
The "Goodview" restaurant up the hill from the beach was great, we ate there several times.
Shopping in Patong we found that prices at the Otop (Rat-U-Thit rd, behind the Holiday Inn) were cheaper than along Thaweewong rd (the beach rd), but I guess it depends on what you're looking for. Three restaurants that have excellent food and are cheap were: Song Pee Nong (soi Kepsup, off Rat-U-Thit rd), More Ma's (at the Otop), and Number One Seafood (off Bangla rd).
Overall we loved Merlin Beach, were sad to leave, and can't wait to return!!

Stayed here from 2/7 to 13/7/07. This was our 3rd consecutive year here. The big attraction for us has always been the 3 most magnificent pools and being away from the hustle and bustle of Patong, despite having a few hiccups on arrival. Having booked and requested inter-connecting rooms months in advance, and sending many friends to the Merlin from our "rave reviews", we were bitterly disappointed on arrival to be told "no interconnecting - fully booked". NOT HAPPY JAN!!! Well, after an hour of "discussions" with the manager (finally), we got our request. Whilst it was very nice to have our name on the "welcome" board as returning guests, flower garlands and photos taken, it didn't excuse the "sorry no room". In our "proper rooms", we were happy and excited to be back. We had a superior room that overlooked the spa pool. Deluxe rooms are slightly larger and overlook the bar pool and/or Andaman Sea which really is divine. Apart from that everything is the same.

The breakfast this year, whilst plentiful, didn't seem to match previous years - both in quality and selection. It was the same selection most days - no variety as in the past = BORING! Mangoes were in season, but not once was there any on offer at breakfast! Guests had to get their own tea/coffee and plates/glasses piled up on your table. Previously, this never happened. I would suggest the hotel has reduced staff, as there were fewer around and many looked unhappy. Last year the staff always smiled and laughed with guests - this year not at all!

Apart from the breakfast being part of your booking, we didn't eat at the hotel at all as it was very expensive and more fun eating in town. We'd catch the hotel shuttle bus into Patong late afternoon, do some shopping, then eat with the locals for around $A15-20 for 4 of us. If you walk onto the hotel private beach, and walk left up the path, you'll come across "Goodview Rest", which serves lovely cheap meals. It is popular with guests, so book early in the day. Many guests were going there for lunches/sandwiches as well instead of buying at hotel = too expensive.

Can highly recommend in Patong the restaurants 'Sweet', 'Sabai Sabai' and 'No 6'. The food is divine and oh so cheap!!!

Tuk Tuks and taxis outside the Merlin will cost you 200bht into Patong. It can add up over a week or so, hence catching the free shuttle one way!

Make sure you visit the new shopping centre Jung Ceylon just past Bangla Road. There you will find the most magnificent supermarket Carrefour where you can pick up all your water, nibblies, drinks, grog, fruit etc for next to nothing $. Otherwise there are plenty of 7-11 stores around.

The weather once again was divine! Warm and sunny, however a couple of 1/2 hour downpours added relief from the sun a couple of times.

Despite our couple of hiccups, I would still have no hesitation in staying and recommending the Merlin Resort. It really is a beautiful resort. It purely depends on whether or not you want to be in a quiet location or in amongst the action. We didn't want to be pestered by shoptraders selling goods 24/7, therefore had the best of both worlds.

Have read other reviews which have been critical of the Merlin catering too much for families. Yeah there were kids, but you will find families with young kids anywhere! It's better than striking a group of boozy, loudmouthed youths!!!!

NOTE: The passageways are mopped constantly during the day. Please be extremely careful. They are very very slippery. We saw a number of people slip and hurt themselves.

Me and my boyfriend stayed at the merlin for 10 days in July 07, I had booked this hotel 10 months in advance and was really excited to be going but was disappointed with my stay! I booked the holiday myself as im a travel agent and had heard good comments from my collegues and customers. I booked a delux room and when we arrived we were told that they had overbooked and even though we booked so far in advance they could only put us in a superior room, they tried to fob us off by saying that there is no difference with the rooms but i know for a fact that there is and was quite upset about it, espically when we were told by other people that they had got a delux room from booking in after us!
The hotel itself is well kept and clean, the pools were cleaned daily and the food in the buffet breakfast was always fresh and well stocked. The La Gondola resturant was not the best so i would recommed going to a resturant in Patong if you fancy Italian (theres one in the big shopping mall thats to die for and i would highly recommend, but i cant remember the name). The Thai resturant and Buffet resturant were both or high quality and i would recommend these, we never tried the seafood resturant in the hotel but it did look lovely and have some good views onto the beach.
The area that the hotel is set in is about 10 minutes drive away from the hustle and bustle of Patong, which is ideal because you can go out if you want or stay in your quiet hotel room.
I have seen some other reviews where people have gone on about the Tuk tuk driver outside the hotel, these were not a problem to us and didnt bother you unless you looked like you wanted them, the hotel does offer a taxi service too so we used this as the cars were cleaner and safer. I also used the free shuttle service and even though the times arent great i still found it a great help.
One thing i did notice about the hotel staff was that they seemed to give the australian guests prefrence over us english which annoyed me as i have paid alot for the holiday and never recieved what i booked or the service that i expected.
I would recommend that you send the hotel a email a couple of weeks before going there to confirm that you will be getting the room that you booked and take a copy as conformation incase they overbook again. Dont get me wrong the hotel was lovely but just not what was expected.
If you have any questions about the holiday please email me and i'll be happy to answer.

We stayed at the Merlin Beach resort for 7 nights in June. The weather was very mixed and was sunny but also rained a little too much. The resort in itself is ok with the main feature being the huge pools and the close proximity to Patong. It did however add up when you paid 200Baht to go in and out of patong all week. The service at the Merlin was typical of a large resort and was not great. The room wasn't cleaned properly a few times and we didn't find some of the staff all that friendly. The food at the resorts restaurants were also very average and breakfast being the worst. Our friends who were also staying with us stopped eating the pre-paid breakfast after 2 days. Also at breakfast we would be seated then get up to go to the buffet and then the staff would give our table to someone else and we would be left without a seat. It is best to go into Patong to eat where it is also cheaper. A word of warning, the drinks at the swim up bar/pool bars are terrible and dont even seem to have any alcohol in them. Its best to stick to the Singa beers. We went to the 7 eleven store in Patong and bought our own drinks to drink by the pool. The Merlin beach is definitely not a 5 star and is bearly a 4 star resort and there are plenty of other options to consider. However if you like lots of pools, lounging around and being relatively close to the action this may be the place for you.

Me and my fiancee' went to the merlin beach in nov of 2006,the hotel was everything i was hoping for and more.we stayed in a deluxe room which was a good size overlooking the main pool.we never had a problem finding a lounger and towels can be booked out at no cost, the family area is situated in a seperate part of the hotel from the rest. The room was cleaned daily and mini bar topped up(drinking water was free).the accomadation has resort spa but i would reccomend going to either side of the private beach where you can have a massage at a quarter of the price and just as good as the hotel which is very pricey,we never ate at the hotel we always ate out at patong where theres lots of choice, patong is abit too far to walk as its up and down mountain type roads however there is a daily bus service from the hotel at no extra cost and takes about 5-10mins,for me the hotels in an excellent location, situated out on its own but close enough to patong, the baan rim pa restaurant(patong) is highly recommended as its set high above overlooking the bay.we will be looking to come back to this hotel as we found it simply breathtaking.

I have just returned home after staying at the Merlin Beach Resort for 10 days, WHAT A FANTASTIC EXPERIENCE, after reading some of the reviews on Trip Advisor i was a bit unsure if i would enjoy the Merlin Beach Resort, But once we arrived it was absolutley fantastic, i cant wait to go again.

The resort is so clean and the staff are very helpful the food is fantastic, and i dont concider it to be expensive at all i spend more money in Melbourne going out for dinner for one night than 3 nights at the resort.

I had all my massages and manicure's in the resorts Day Spa, and they were just fantastic in Melbourne i pay approx $98 for a facial but at the Merlin Beach Resort it only cost me $53 approx, i guess it depends on what you like, my sister had her massages in the Patong Town and they are quite cheep.

In relation the the Tour East guides in the Resort we booked all our tours with them, i believe you get what you pay for, going into town and finding it cheeper doesnt guarentee that the company you will go with has Insurance and Life Jackets, and will they give you your money back if it rains?? we thought to ourselves "running around town all day trying to find a cheeper deal, all for the sake of saving $20aud is stupid"

I reccommed the Merlin Beach Resort to anyone, it is a fantastic resort and fantastic people, I just loved it
