My friend and I stayed at the Merlin Beach Resort in Phuket, Thailand, for 8 days in November 2012, and it was fabulous.
The Resort is nicely situated, slightly away from the main shopping of Patong Beach (its about a 10 minute shuttle ride from the hotel) and it has its own private beach. It has three pool areas, with heaps of sun lounges & shade provided, and a great swim-up bar which we enjoyed lunch at several times, as well as a great selection of cocktails!
The room was a deluxe room (slightly bigger than the others), nicely fitted out, with a good bathroom. It had a flat screen TV, good sized balcony overlooking the pool and the ocean, and the two beds were 'king twin size' - almost a double bed each!
We had the choice of 4 restaurants each day for lunch and dinner, and having only gone into the main shopping/eating precinct of Patong Beach 3 times over our stay, we ate mainly at the hotel - because it was so relaxing, we didn't get any tummy sickness (like can be the case at a restaurant downtown), and there was lots of diversity with the menus, including Thai, Indonesian, Italian, some Indian, and various arrays of continental salads.
We visited the Spa twice - I had a fabulous hour-long aromatherapy massage on one visit, and a 50 minute facial on another visit (both were reasonably priced, around $60 and $45 respectively).
Between two of us, for 8 days, where we ate mostly at the hotel, had drinks & cocktails at the various restaurants and bars, used the mini bar a bit, had room service twice, the 'room bill' at the end of our stay came to approx. $530, which was very reasonable.
I would definitely stay at this hotel again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with either a pool view or an ocean view.

We have just returned from our stay at the Merlin Beach Resort. First time in Thailand this hotel was recommended by friends and it did not disappoint. We had a pool access room, bit pricier but well worth it. Breakfast was great however restaurants bit pricey so we ate elsewhere. Only down side was you had to catch a cab to go to town although they have free shuttle service it's not regular enough and having free wi-fi limited to only the lobby area was inconvenient. We were told this was due to poor reception however it was fine in your room if you pay for it !

Room Tip: Pool access rooms are great but they are a bit more and probably not if you have kids. They would enjoy the bigger pool and childrens play areas.

I stayed here for 2 nights but found the place a little boring, expensive ,miles away from Patong ,Dated rooms, crappy beach, but the pool and breakfast was terrific but thats the only good points ,I ended up going to Patong and found a cute little hotel on the second street back from the waterfront for 600bt clean ,quiet, doorstop shopping ..a bargain compared to the 6000bt+ at that other place

We have enjoyed the Merlin Beach Resort so much over the years we returned for our 3rd stay between 2nd November and 10th November 2012.

Again, an absolute pleasure from check in to check out. We requested top floor with ocean views which was arranged with no problem. They provide 2 door key cards which is handy when theres two of you and to keep the power on for charging your cameras, phones etc.

There are many options with rooms, from the one we chose or pool view or pool side where you open your door and in you go to one of the many big pools. The pool side may get a little noisy when the kids are enjoying themselves, but the rooms are dark and pretty well sound proofed with the air con running, which is icey cold. The showers are hot and strong, TV (pay or free to air) available with free Fox movies and National Geographic with heaps of doccos etc. Decent size safes in all rooms. Beds are big and comfy.

One of the best full breakfasts around (make sure you include this) western and asian tastes are catered for, with everything from fruit, cereal, bacon, pastries fresh cooked eggs anyway you want them, dine inside or outside.

We choose this hotel partly because it is just out of town (@5minutes) away from the bustle of busy Patong, its a great location. There are a number of great restaurants in the hotel and every night is a different themed full on buffet, Thai, BBQ, European etc, with dining on the lawn by the ocean and usually live music. Sit at the swim up bar and grab a drink or food or be waited on whilst sitting around the pool. Each night happy hour in the lobby bar with half price cocktails 6-8 and 10 - 11 with the band playing all your favourites, yes and requests! Pool tables, Internet, a kids creche, fitness centre, tennis court etc etc. They have just put in a new kids pool with tipping water buckets, big water gun things and other bits to keep the kids ammused oh and a new kids water slide into the pool. This is a great hotel for kids/ families , plenty of shallow pools suitable for the real young upwards. And equally as good for us adults, did i mention the swim up bar ??!

We had a couples spa at the truly wonderful hotel spa (provided with 20% discount card) that included thai oil rub, spa bath and massage, what a romantic relaxing couple of hours, where we both were treated in the same room. Many options here, so good we went back the next day and had a foot massage and facial too, highly recommended! Or you can walk down to the beach and have a massage while listening to the waves roll in by one of the other massage places - 300Bht 1 hour, oh, and they will also do you laundry for @70 Bht a kilo, comes nack next day all folded, clean and smelling nissse. (ironing available too if you so wish)

There is a free shuttle bus that takes you to Patong or Phuket Town and back at various times through out the day or a Tuk Tuk or Taxi is only @250Bht, (@$7.50AUD) theres a taxi stand at the front.

Venture up to the 'Little Tiger' restaurant on the hill top up the steps to the left at the back of the hotel absolutely great food, try the peanut satay and watch the sun set over the ocean, brilliant spot cheap!! Also, venture out the front of the hotel where the taxi stand is and turn left and take a 5 minute walk up the road round the bend and you will find the 'Wind Surf' restaurant, brilliant hidden gem right on the ocean with views accross the bay to Patong, try the chicken / rice soup or yellow curry chicken (or prawns or meat!). Tri Trang beach is also here where you can sit at the new bar and grab some food whilst watching the ocean or hire a sea canoe. This is a nice sandy beach better than the one at the rear of the hotel and well worth the wander up the road.
(At the moment due to them about to start building a new resort here there is a big green fence so the only access to this great quiet beach is via the Wind Surf Restaurant (quickest way) or the road to the Tri Trang Resort)

Grab the free shuttle bus into Phuket town, (or a taxi - @500Bht from Patong) its first stop is the huge new Central Festival Shopping Cenre, with all the big brand name shops, its a bit cheaper than home in Aus and has everything you could want. Do it on a weekend and then walk or taxi up to the weekend markets round the corner with over 2000 stalls and food from fried crickets to satay, i tried chicken on a stick covered in a red sauce, not sure quite what it was but if you like HOT and SPICY this is for you, dont get that suace on your skin !! haha.

The markets were a little cheaper than in Patong with a few things that I didnt see else where.
If you want to walk there turn left out the front of Central Shopping centre (where the bus dropped you off) go up to the traffic lights and turn right, about 4 roads on your left is the road the markets are on, Wirat Hong Yok, if you get to the police post on the right youve gone too far !
Get to the markets about 4ish, they start to get going and not so hot then, a taxi back to Patong is about 500Bht, then if you time it right get the free bus back to the hotel, (or about 700Bht all way to the hotel).

Only word of advice, avoid the (usually English) guys on mopeds that will ride up to you (or approach you on the street) as you walk around Patong and ask, "Do you speak English" then its out with the scratch and win tickets and Wow lucky you , you have won the big prize, just come back with us to collect it.! then its hard sell for time share and a couple of hours you will never get back, WASTE OF TIME !!! Anyone who offers you a free anything especially if there is a scratchy ticket type thing involved is a hard sell for some apartment (usually) dont do it ! One of these companies does not appear well liked by the Thais, 'Absolutely' unliked you might say!!

Otherwise ENJOY, RELAX, SMILE and hopefully you wont meet to many uptight arrogant or rude Westerners. Hey im an Aussie, but some doods just werent meant to travel overseas,, right?

Room Tip: Grab the top floor with a view of the ocean !

This resort is amazing! Its like a small village, the people are fantastic and there is a lot to do. Everyone wants to help you, theres smiles everywhere you look and the service is very efficient. I read the poor reviews and I think those people would never be happy. Def will return next year!
