“Holiday Inn v's Laguna Beach, Le Meridien, JW Marriot”
Reviewed October 20, 2009

Hi. We have taken our family with 4 kids to Phuket a number of times (twice in the past 3 months). We just arrived home yesterday from our latest stay. This time we spent 12 nights at the Holiday Inn Patong Beach in two interconnecting rooms in the Busakorn Wing. We booked directly with the hotel (thank you Miss Papan). Overall we loved the hotel and will be visiting again. Here is our feedback below:

PRO's
1. The location is awesome. It is right in Patong but the Busakorn Wing is very private and you could almost be on a tropical island. We have previously stayed at more remote locations but we have got bored or spent lots of time in taxis. Not this time. Dad could lie around the pool having a beer while mum and the girls went shopping within 50 feet of the hotel.
2. Did I mention the location?. Hundreds of restaurants and bars within a stones throw of the lobby. This not only provided great variety but also resulted in significant competition for price and quality of food. The prices at Holiday Inn were therefore very reasonable compared to more remote hotels. It seems the more remote the more that prices get jacked up. We actually visited good friends at the JW Marriott and whilst it was definitely a very nice hotel the restaurant prices were at least triple those of the Holiday Inn Patong (not that there's anything wrong with that if you can afford it!)/.
3. Sams steakhhouse is fantastic if you want a change from eating Thai.
4. The Pool in the Busakorn Wing i large and beautiful. It is also very private from the hustle and bustle outside. Not as big as the Pool at Le Meridien or Laguna but it also has a less people. We are pretty fussy about pools and loved it (although it doesnt have a slide for the kids)
5. Because we could walk everywhere we saved a fortune on transfers. However, the tuk tuk drivers knew this so immediately discounted prices for any transfers that we wanted. We generally paid 100 BAHT for a tuk tuk ride (about $3.50). However, if you stay over the hill at Le Meridient it is too far to realistically walk with kids and there is no variety of restaurants. Tuk Tuk drivers therefore charge 500BHT plus each way (which is crazy because you can book a private van for the whole day for 1000 THB)
6. We found a great tailor nearby (Uomo tailors). They didnt try to rip us off like some other tailors and their quality was excellent. I got 4 Hugo Boss copy business suits with 2 pairs of pants each in Italian Cashmere/Silk for about AUD $200 each. My wife also had a formal dress and 2 linen suits made. Say hi to Mr Lucky and Mr Sunny. Tell them that Mr Dominic recommended him.
7. The rooms were nice. Certainly not as fancy as Laguna Beach or JW Marriot but better than Le Meridien in our view.

CON's

1. The pool bar gets bees (maybe 20 or 30 at a time). They seem to love any sugary drinks. None of the staff seem to care which is fine for them. However, if you have a family member that carry's an epipen due to a potentially fatal bee allergy it means that the pool bar is off limits most of the time.
2. Sun lounge hogs. There are signs everywhere saying that the Busakorn Wing pool is reserved for Busakorn Wing guests. However, it seems that people must get out in the morning, lay towels and articles of clothing on sun lounges, and then reserve them for the whole day. Often when you look around the pool you can see 20 people but 200 sun lounges with towels laid on them to keep them reserved. There simply must be a better system than this. It means that people who geniunely only use lounges when they want to use the pool often find it hard to get a lounge.
3. It would be nice if they had bigger family rooms. The interconnecting room works but it is not ideal if you have 4 kids like us. I wonder why they wont let the kids in the villas? Honeymooners only perhaps?

Overall we would really recommend the Holiday Inn. It is not as big or fancy as Laguna or the JW Marriott. The beach is also not as quiet. However, there is heaps more to do and you have the benefit of a quiet rest around a large pool with tropical gardens just metres from bars, restaurants, tailors, night clubs and all the fun stuff that Phuket is famous for. We won't stay in an isolated spot again. It just costs a lot more for food, drinks etc.. and the upside of quietness is just not worth it to us. However, we do like a bit of action in our family so the others would be perfect for some.

Just returned from 12 night stay ay Holiday Inn, Patong, Phuket. Hotel is in a good location across from beach and close to main nightlife but far enough away to avoid any noise. Service from start to finish - porters, reception, maids, waiters, pool attendants, etc. was excellent. Even the security guys at the entrances/lifts were keen to please. Rooms were reasonably sized; we (mum. dad and son aged 12) were in the main part of the hotel but fittings and furnshings were well maintained. Breakfast was very good - wide choice. Swimming pool area was clean and sun loungers easy to come by although hotel was only 70% full at this time. One small point: prices in hotels for drinks rather expensive - you pay the extra for the quality surroundings and service.

The resort of Patong is very busy and rather brash. Good if you like bars, music and shopping especially if you are keen to haggle. However, shop/bar owners and locals selling everything from hammocks, DVDs and t-shirts, bother the life out of tourists to the point where you can't walk down the street with being badgered - there got that off my chest

We stayed in the Busakorn wing this time. I was very happy with it, loved the shower cubicle with it's bench seat and nozzle options, and that it was seperate to the vanity basin, and the toilet was seperate too. The room was gorgeous, slightly Thai in style compared to the very modern beautiful main wing rooms (which are also gorgeous). The pool is wonderful, love the different nooks and crannies, some with bubbles, some with fountain, and the swim up bar is great. Sam's Steak House in the main wing was supurb, loved all the extra touches and the steak was perfect. Will stay here again next time.

We have stayed at the Holiday Inn on two other occassions but in the main wing with our teenage children. This time it was myself, husband and our great friends. We decided to splurge as it was our 20th wedding anniversay so booked 8 nights in the Busakorn Pool Access Villas. It was fantastic! Absoultley worth every cent. The rooms are beautiful and large and you literally take two or three steps out the sliding door and you are in the pool. Whilst the pool is not private it has many nooks and crannies for some private moments and its lovely to chat to people as they swim past your room. We met some great people who gave us some tips on places to shop etc.

The shower was fantastic with a massive rain water shower head and plenty of pressure.

The mini bar is refilled every day with two Breezers, about 6 beers (different brands) and assorted soft drinks, fruit juices and bottled water. We went to Carrafor supermarket and purchased an esky (the old fashioned polystyrene type) for about $4 ausie dollars and filled it with ice from the ice machine in the hotel and filling it up each day with the drinks from the fridge (as they are not cold when replaced) so we always had cold drinks. I even asked the lovely ladies who cleaned our room if I can have only Lemon Breezes and it was done!

There is also WiFi avaliable in the room which is included in the price and you can get a loaded ipod (also included in price) on loan from the business centre to use in the Boss sound system in your room.

Also even though we have kids we dont really want to be with other peoples kids when we are on holiday without them and the Busakorn Villas are not really suitable for kids.

I would highly recommed the Busakorn Pool Access Villas, we had an amazing stay! We can't wait to go back.

From the moment we walked into this hotel we were so pleased with our choice. The hotel is right in the middle of Patong and you can easily walk to all the markets and shopping malls. The beach is just across the road.We booked 2 rooms. One room with a king bed and the other with 2 double beds. The beds were extremely comfortable and the rooms were immaculately clean.

We made use of the room service and to our surprised they arrived within 20 min.. and we ordered quite a lot of food.

The staff of this hotel is its best asset and you will always be greeted with a friendly smile. We will definitely be returning to this hotel in the near future.

my partner and i stayed at the more recently renovated busakorn wing in early october 2009, after booking the Busakorn Hot Deal on agoda, and it was quite quite lovely.

Holiday Inn - in general:
everything you've heard is true, the hotel is literally in the thick of things. the grounds are so vast, you'll have a bit of a hike if you attempt to check-in at the 'wrong' lobby like my partner and i did when we walked in from the beach. the check-in staff at the main wing was great, she walked us right over to the busakorn wing and gave us a mini-tour of the grounds on the way. she also revealed that, in her opinion, the deluxe rooms in the main wing were the better rooms than those in busakorn, because of the sea view. (but i didn't ask to see the deluxe rooms personally)

Busakorn:
busakorn wing seemed MUCH more private, especially the pool! the main wing's pool seemed overcrowded with loud white people basting on deck chairs,so i was grateful for the privacy of the busakorn pool. even though it was a bit of a walk from the beach, the busakorn lobby faced one of the partially covered shopping districts, good trade-off =)

Rooms:
the layout was unusual as the front door opened directly into the dressing area with the bathroom and separate toilet on either sides of the door. another door separates the dressing area from the main bedroom with a little sitting area, and a balcony overlooking the nicer pool. the fittings were brilliant, LOVED the super cushy bed-linens. dvd players included! oh and the clarify an earlier review, there is no free mini-bar unless you stay at the busakorn villas, but that hardly bothered us.

Spa:
we were lucky that the day we set aside for a couple spa was coincidentally the day the spa re-opened from renovations. had the sweetheart promotion, but it's good to note the prices in their book don't include taxes, so you'll have to set aside a bit more than stated. the flower bath was in an tiny outdoor jacuzzi (built for two slim people) but the fact that it faced a see-through glass stairwell of an adjacent building made me a little uncomfortable. it was my first experience of not being given those little disposable undies when asked get ready for the spa. they caved when my partner kept squirming in discomfort at being starkers in front of the two ladies doing the massage =) the scrub was VERY thorough, massage was very adequate.

Service:
great service - the young-looking guy with braces at reception was intensely helpful when a tailor was late dropping clothes off for us at the lobby, and the charm thai restaurant staff were grand even though we came in for a late dinner after our spa.

what i didn't like was the confusion over our taxi to the airport - the day before check-out, we asked reception what arrangements we should make for our early morning international flight, and they gave us a time to meet at the lobby for the taxi-transfer. however, when we checked out, we discovered that no such taxi-arrangements existed, and they wanted to charge us twice the standard airport transfer rate to arrange for one on the spot. fortunately, we ended up finding a private taxi who could get us to the airport for just 200baht more than what we paid to get in from the airport instead. and we made our flight =)

Note of caution:
DO NOT go on the khai islands snorkelling trip offered by a tour operator called manit!! it's the ultimate tourist trap. it's a snorkelling trip, so they provide you the googles and snorkels, but the flippers have to be rented for extra. the two islands we were brought to were ugly touristy clones of each other, with deck chairs that you had to RENT to sit in, and if you weren't willing to pay, you could sit on what little exposed sand/rock there is on the beach, but then you can't go snorkeling because they tell you no one will be responsible for watching your belongings. the area they allow you to snorkel in is murky grey because people have kicked the (dead rocky) corals to bits. the result - you can't see how high the corals are and you are likely to get cut against the sharp rock. and the fish literally attack you and their bites leave marks. this isn't as cute as you'd imagine: two of my friends came out with bleeding ankles where the fish wouldn't stop nipping them. at the second island, the boat operators stop a good way out at sea and make you walk to and from the beach, in waters at least waist high. the reason? the dead coral on the beach is so sharp, it would scratch the bottom of the boat, so they figure the tourists can just get off and get themselves torn up. wearing your flip-flops aren't an option because the waves are strong enough to wash them off your feet, and a friend on our boat got a cut on his foot so deep, it didn't stop bleeding till we pleaded with (and tipped) one of the ice-cream touts for a band-aid.

i'd come back to the holiday inn phuket =)

After reading many excellent reviews on the Holiday Inn we had a very high expectation which the Holiday Inn meet in every way. We (2 adults and 2 kids) stayed in a kids suite room which was just perfect for us. The room came with a king bed and a bunk bed for the kids. The room has all the usual amenities plus 4 bottles of free water daily.

The location of the hotel is just perfect for a family with kids. Walking distance to everything. Beach across the road. Restaurants, money exchangers, tour booking agents, shopping, laundry, etc at your door step. No need to negotiate for a tuk tuk. The one worry we had in staying in Patong (from past experience) it’s loud and crazy but once you are on the hotel grounds that all seems miles away. Our kids loved the holiday Inn and had such an amazing time which made our family holiday just perfect.

Highly recommended!!!
