“Do you want peace and quiet with the option of party meyhem?”
Reviewed March 2, 2011

Patong Beach in daylight is the Spanish costa's 10 years ago with 10,000 power lines at first floor level like silly string. It is a mecca for knock offs, (designer clothes and bags) with good natured salesmen taking no thanks with good grace unlike Sharm el sheik. However at night nothing can prepare you for the impact of loud music, neon lights, a variety of 'talent' like Amsterdam on steroids. It is depressing for women when blokes in thongs have better boobs than most girls, and the amount of 'single' older men on the pull astounding.
We had done our research on the place and knew it was loud, but actually experiencing it was on another level. Thankfully the Amari Coral Beach is just around the corner from Patong Bay and allows you to escape the madness completely, visiting it for short periods when the fancy takes you.
The hotel itself is classy, serene and an oasis of calm, being 10 minutes walk away from Patong, but it could be 10 miles away. The pool areas are great, the restaurants excellent (though pricey) and most guests seem to only buy drinks during the happy hours, when they become sensibly priced.
We had a few very minor teething problems with ouir room on arrival, but within 10 minutes they had been fixed - an indication of the service levels which were exemplary during our 12 day stay. Do be mindful of the stairs if you are not mobile, as they are everywhere and you cannot escape them.
The Sivarra Spa is worth a visit. Whilst it is much more expensive than the massage 'shops' everywhere in Patong, it is still cheap compared to most 5 star hotels around the world, and every bit as good. However, do try out the 'skin-eating' fish tanks in Patong, which clean up your feet a treat!
If you are looking for a great hotel in a quiet location yet with loads to see and do nearby - this is it.

It seems like we stayed at a different hotel, having read some of the glowing reviews here, we found the rooms here in need of serious updating, the superior room that we booked, was not as good as some motels we have stayed at, we got moved to a deluxe room, the only difference was it was larger, the tired furniture was just the same, little TV, bathroom fixtures old, Amari would do better to overhaul all of its rooms, rather than spend millions on building residences behind the hotel, we have travelled the world, and these were the worst hotel rooms we encountered. There are also many steps to negotiate, any one with an infirmity would have difficulty here.

we stayed at Amari Coral Beach for 5 nights. The hotel is very nice, with good view and close to Patong beach (5 minutes walking distance) but the problem is the stairs, very tiring since there is no elevator that can takes you to your room, we really had problems going up and downe. Breakfast is very good, helpful staff, clean and good rooms. The only disadvantages are the stairs and since the hotel is on the top of the hill we found it also difficult to walk everytime we want to go to a restaurant or to Patong beach. They should have free shuttle bus. Just for the records this hotel is not reccomnded for young as it is somehow far from the night and pubs it is more suitable for honeymooners and seniors (you need taxi)

Pro's: Quiet, beautiful, serene. Great porters. Wonderful variety breakfast buffet. Nice pool area. I had a good experience with the onsite tailors in having a suit made ( and similar prices to what I found in Patong). Complimentary bottled water in room (in glass containers so not made to take with you)
Cons: Concierge not helpful. The first night we asked her about a restaurant and she sent us to Patong seafood which I felt was a tourist trap with mediocre food. Also the last day we asked for taxi to the hotel and we were told by another concierge that it was 950 baht and that was really our only option. So we walked to town and got a taxi for 250 baht less.
Small beach which was private but no chairs
Expensive. Restaurants were significantly more expensive that Patong beach. But some might think worth it for the serenity.
No complimentary internet. In fact it was $$, 4 baht a min (17 cents a min) where in town it was 0.5-1 baht a min.

When we arrived in Patong we were deeply concerned that we had arrived in a tourist trap that was a million miles away from the beautiful Thai locations we have visited in the past. The town is a loud, smelly, busy dump and we drove through towards the hotel with a knot in our stomachs, hoping that we would be at a remove from the massage parlours that seem to occupy so many of Patong’s buildings.

We were thrilled with what we saw when we arrived at the Amari Coral Beach Resort. It is on the edge of Patong so we could have the quiet holiday we wanted, but it is close enough that we could take a tuk-tuk in to town to pick up a few beers for the room (200 baht each way) and 135 baht for a four-pack of Singha beer.

Our room in the hotel was possibly the nicest location we have stayed in, with a superb balcony looking out over the bay. We spent a significant part of every evening sitting listening to the waves lapping against the shore, enjoying the silence while sipping on an ice-cold beer.

The days were spent lounging about by the pool or on the deck-chairs facing out onto the bay. Early evenings could be spent on the jetty watching the beautiful Phuket sunset. Later evenings were spent in one of the three excellent restaurants (one Thai, one International and a fabulous Italian place called la Gritta) and in either the poolside or lobby bar. The quality of these facilities was very important given our desire to avoid the town centre in Patong. Happy Hour cocktails were a delight.

Overall, the hotel offers much for the visitor to do, whether that involves rest and relaxation or partying in a madcap town. I would recommend that anyone stay there once!

We had a Deluxe room. It was a lovely sized room with a beautiful sea view. All the staff were very polite and helpful. The scenery from the pools are amazing and a good size. There is a good selection of food for breakfast. We had a fantastic time.
