We arrived in Mae Hong Son without reservations a few days before New Year's day. My wife had done some research and we'd talked to a few folk on prior days, so had a short list...most were outside of town. Baiyoke Chalet turned out to be the perfect spot for a 1 night stay in town. It is RIGHT next to the (touristy) night market, and easy walk to many restaurants and various other shops. The mid-level rooms are not very interesting, but for just 300 more Baht, you can get the large rooms (~twice size of mid-sized). We did and were quite happy. With a bit of negotiation we got it for US$49 (1500B). The staff was helpful (especially the "driver" who we ran into in the lobby and who gave us excellent information about where to go, how long it takes to drive to our next destination, etc - all for the price of a 20B tip - of course it helps that my wife speaks Thai - he didn't speak English). The breakfast wasn't so tasty, but it was free... No elevator, so a room on the upper floors (like ours) requires a bit of exercise to carry luggage (maid will help at check-in). Definitely go here if you need a night or two in downtown Mae Hong Son. If you want something more "resort"-like and relaxing, you should probably checkout the more expensive places outside of...More
