This is the only 4 or 5 star rated hotel in Maehongson. It is the most grand hotel in the area. It is large, majestic looking, the grounds are impeccably maintained, the staff are friendly and helpful. There is a pool available only to guests (no locals allowed), and a gym.
The rooms are large, although outdated as the hotel hasn't been upgraded for quite some time and even the televisions are the old LCD type. There is a shower/bath however, which is a rarity in Thailand, and the added bonus is that you don't have a wet floor after your shower.
There is a balcony attached to each room & there are only 2 floors.
Tours can be organised in the lobby.
However, I would suggest eating elsewhere. The restaurant is beautiful and overlooks the gardens, but on the occasions I have eaten here, I have found the food was pre-cooked, stored in the fridge and heated up in the microwave, and was still cold. I no longer eat here. Even the breakfasts can be quite lame, unless its included in your price.
It is quite a distance to town, but there is a mini-bus that takes guests in and out. Its too far to walk, however. Although there are 2 scooter for hire shops in town, one of which is near the airport, but the Imperial will pick you up from the airport.
It is the most beautiful hotel in town.

Room Tip: The junior suites are the best - much bigger and overlook the gardens. If you're staying in a s...

The best thing about this hotel is having breakfast on the terrace restaurant, looking out at the lovely grounds with a small stream running by the mature trees. If the sun is shining and the birds are singing then it would make all the shortcomings of the hotel melt away. Breakfast is a full buffet with western and Thai cuisine. I particularly enjoyed the rich pork rib soup, an unusual but delicious item that I did not expect to find in Mae Hong Son.

The hotel itself is a couple of kilometres out of town, which makes it a quieter alternative. Perhaps a little too far to walk but certainly perfect if you have some form of transport.

Sure the fixtures and furnishing have seen better days, the hot water plumbing is cranky and the beautiful teak floor creaky and in need of refurbishment, but the swimming pool renovations should be done by summer 2014. That would make this hotel a very good choice, especially with the prices available for advance bookings.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the road can be noisy but traffic fades away by 10 pm, so no worries. Choose the top fl...

Very nice room with an amazing wooden floor, bathroom with a tub, very nice furniture. They offered a discount of 50%, (final price some 1100 baht per room and night), BUT neglected to mention that the pool was under repair and the gym was not available. Also, neglected to mention that breakfast was not included in the price (additional 250 baht). Hopelessly overpriced hotel restaurant.

This is a reasonable choice in Mae Hong Son with large, clean, old style rooms and a peaceful setting. You feel like you're in a mountain lodge, but you're only a 5 minute shuttle bus away from downtown Mae Hong Son, and well placed to visit the many sites in the area. The staff is friendly and seemingly not very busy. The rooms are spacious and reasonably priced, but note the darker, old style motif. The floors creak, and the walls are seemingly made of paper where you could hear work outside, people walking in the hallways, and phones ringing in other rooms. MOST IMPORTANTLY, note that they are working on the pool at present, and it can be noisy in the morning and an eyesore for those in room 1-5. The complimentary breakfast was quite nice, and the complimentary shuttle bus was also a help for those that didn't drive.

Room Tip: Watch out for rooms 1-5 as they face the pool which is being renovated.

I had stayed for business trip for few nights and found that there was nothing interesting about this place at all and the room is not even that good when consider with price and adv.

The room is big and dark with old yellow light and thick curtain which will make u feel like living in old castle in 70's. The smell of the room is not good and the light is neither good so it is just ok in overall for the transit stay, not for honeymoon or vacation. The bathroom with a tub like in normal old-stylish hotel which going to please old travelers from old days.

Swimming pool and sauna could be the plus of this hotel but do not expect too much!

The location is bad as it is far from everything that u can imagine and quite near to woods so welcome your new friends, the mosquito can be your new company when staying and walking around this hotel at night time.

However, the room is quite clean with free wi-fi.

The Imperial MHS is located on Route 108 on the southerly outskirts of the town. Being an Imperial it is part of a large group of hotels and a certain reputation to keep.
We had not booked but turned up to see what was available. We were offered a deluxe for 2500B or a suite for 4500B. After some deliberation we were offered the suite at 3500B which we accepted.
We stayed in Room No.001 on the pool deck. It is a nicely laid out room with a sitting area, a very cosy dining area and a bed area. Unfortunately the first impression was a strong musty smell. I imagine this room had not been opened for some time.
A couple of hours with the aircon running cleared this odour to an acceptable level.
There was one other problem with this room and that was noise insulation. There was some heavy footsteps from the room above, something that should not happen in an Imperial hotel. Other than that I cannot fault the room or its cleanliness.
My wife nearly tripped up on the wooden decking around the pool, one piece was not attached, probably rotten. Not surprising in this climate.
The gardens were lovely and well kept, very pleasant to have a quiet stroll.
We ate once in the restaurant with good service and food that was well presented.
I would have no hesitation staying in this hotel again but would I pay 4500B for the suite, probably not.
