“Big hotel in a not so nice area”
Reviewed September 13, 2010

The building, rooms and amenities were as expected. The staff was not nearly as friendly and helpful as similar hotels in Thailand. The area around the Pullman has several seedy and very loud bars. You can hear music and voices all night on most nights. We were on the 14th floor and on the "quiet" side of the hotel and still were woke up several nights. The breakfast buffet looked good but EVERYTHING was lukewarm. Eggs, sausage, fruit and drinks should not be all at the same temperature. We have stayed at several hotels in Thailand and the Pullman was the first I was genuinely glad to leave.

Thank you very much for your TripAdvisor report. I would like to apologize for the negative experience that you had with us. I can assure you that this is not the service quality that we strive to provide our guests. Regarding to the noise disturbance in the late night, this problem is out of our control due to the bars around do not belong to our hotel. However, we have sent a letter to ask for co-operation from the local authorities concerned with noise pollution. Concerning your comment on our food at buffet line was not hot enough. I have talked to our Director of Food and Beverage and Executive Chef to rectify this matter. Once again, thank you very much for your comments. We look forward to welcoming you back to the Pullman Khon Kaen Raja Orchid in the not too distant future.

We've stayed at this hotel at least half a dozen times over the past four years so feel well qualified to write a review about it.
Its always been an excellent hotel but since Pullman took over the name from Sofitel its become even better.
Staff are always friendly and attentive. The rooms are fine and the food, generally, delicious.
For lovely cakes and pastries try the Bakers Basket. At night we have enjoyed some great food in the main restaurant at lobby level, lounge and Sports Bar.
There is also a nice large sized swimming pool on the 4th floor.
The buffet breakfasts are generally good with plenty of choice but we have found the food to be better on weekdays than weekends for some reason.A couple of times at weekends there hasnt been such a good choice and some food had gone cold, but not much of an issue really.
The hotel has its own micro brewery and the beer is absolutely delicious.Between 4pm to 6pm they have a buy 1 get 1 free promotion which is well worth taking advantage of.
When you book in you also get vouchers for two free drinks,500 baht off any food purchased in the hotel and 50% off spa treatment which, again, provides excellent value.
I've seen some posters complain about noise but never an issue for us until our last visit.
It was on a Saturday night and I think there is a nightclub/disco nearby that plays music into the early hours. It wasnt overly intrusive, although you could hear it,but not a problem for us anyway as we watched the England v USA World Cup game in the room......the sound of the music was probably more entertaining than the match, actually !
We've stayed on a Saturday before and never heard any music.....maybe depends what room you stay in.....but again not a big issue and it isnt as if you have to get up at 5am for a heavy days work is it !
The hotel is within walking distance of Kosa Plaza with shops and eateries and a 40 baht saamlaw ride will bring you to Central mall.....5 floors of airconditioned shopping, restaurants, cinema and,I think, bowling.
Also,a short ride away is Beung Kaen Nakhon lake which is very large and dotted with restaurants around it.There is a walking path around the lake and its worth seeing in the evening.
So,overall,I would definitely give this hotel 9.9 out of 10.The issues with noise and breakfasts are very very minor and in no way should deter you from staying there.
I've stayed in top hotels in places like London,Dubai,Singapore,Switzerland and Bangkok and nowhere will you find absolute perfection.
For value for money the Pullman Raja Orchid in Khon Kaen is up there with the best !

Excellent hotel in Khon Kaen - all beautiful!

Fabulous pool; fabulous food - awesome buffet breakfast.

And if a Thai national makes your booking - it is only about $50 AUD per night. :-)

This is not 5-star country so one should not expect 5-star hotels. But this is good value and what passes for excellence. Restaurants are interesting but I recommend that you avoid the breakfast meal plan. The food in the downstairs restaurant s quickly gone, not replaced throughout the breakfast. Hot foods are cold and cold foods are not. The other restaurant featuring Chinese and Vietnamese foods are realistic, reasonably priced, and include efficient, helpful wait-staff. A small shop in the lobby serving hot and cold coffee and pastries is convenient and clean.

The rooms are C+ at best. Found several small nagging problems with power, water pressure and inconsistent heating zones. Toilets back up easily. Also you must get used to continual ringing of bells from the nearby train station. It's not loud, but it is there. The hotel is conveniently located to other restaurants, hotels, parks, and clubs.

The gym is small and the staff is not helpful. They are pleasant but inattentive. No staff offers to show you how to use equipment if you have questions. Little touches are missing....water fountain is there with paper cups but no where to throw them away. Equipment is well maintained but there are not enough of the most popular pieces...;treadmills and ellipticals.

Pool area is nice. It is large and clean. The staff there is a bit more attentive and friendly. Pool seemed very kid-friendly and those there were kept amused by water fountains in the kiddie pool area.

Access to shopping is good. New Central store and old Robinson's are within walking distance...but still a good walk. There is a local shopping mall one block down the street and it includes, a food market, many retail shops and a movie theater. Coldest movie theater in Thailand perhaps. Bring a sweater no matter how hot it is outside. Most movies are not subtitled so brush up on your Thai. Several local bars to serve your immediate needs should you have any.

Hotel staff speaks English, but not nearly as well as they think they do. You need to be patient in dealing with front-end staff, but they are friendly and will eventually solve any problems you may have.

After reading some of the previous reviews about the noise problems at this hotel I was a little worried. However not being overly sensitive to noise I booked in anyway. I arrived with ear plugs in tow and asked for a quiet room just to be safe. They put me in a room on the 19th floor and I can safely say that my ear plugs were not needed as there was no noise to be heard from my room. I could hear some noise from the outside corridor but it was very faint. So I guess if you are in a lower floor in a different area of the hotel it could be a problem. There are bands playing and singing in the downstairs restaurants, however Sunday is quiet. Apart from that, the room itself is very nice. Spacious, separate shower and bath, LCD TV, DVD player, free Internet.etc. Actually I wasn't sure if they upgraded me and didn't tell me. The price is very reasonable by Western standards and I also received a 700 baht voucher to use in any of their restaurants. Location is pretty good. There's a shopping centre across the road, however the new Central Plaza is about a 10 minute walk. Close to pubs, restaurants, and local market. Non-air con bus station about a 20 min walk. Reception were very helpful and efficient. Good gym. Wasn’t crazy about the breakfast but not bad. All in all a great hotel and noise, what noise? Call me when you have some Vietnamese guy using an electric drill on your bedroom wall at 7am every morning...however that's another review.

You won’t miss this hotel as it one of the biggest building in town. However the atmosphere in side is very tranquil and relaxing. Friendly staff and excellent service. Nice environment; furniture & décor. Hotel recently become a Pullman therefore everything is very luxury. Would highly recommend for families, couples and business travelers as hotel providing free internet. In addition hotel has best location in town.
