“BEAUTIFUL PLACE ON THE RIVER”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 28, 2012

Found this place last minute while looking in my Lonely Planet book for places to stay. The room was wonderful--had a raised bed on a platform--large windows looking out on your own little garden. People have mentions mosquitos and lizards--so what you are in the tropics--get a room upstairs and you will not have the garden. There was a beautiful infinity pool right over the River Kwai I suppose you could jump in the river if ya wanted to. It was sort of a backwater of the river but you could see the boats going by..Bars and places to eat close by--I usually ate at the place right across the street--good vegetarian food there--also went down the road to a place called Tofu Heaven or something like that--great place to eat. I booked my tiger Temple tour thru Ploy and it was wonderful. Price was also wonderful for the Guest House and very friendly staff--seems as tho it was run by a family who lived on the grounds. Lots of handmade furniture on premises--some very fancy stuff--I would advise this to anyone coming to Kanchaburi on a budget

Room Tip: downstairs rooms have an enclosed garden

As the Lonely Planet says, it's stylish: it's done in an attractive Japanese style. It's a nice touch that they turned the 4 feet or so between the room and a masonry wall into a private garden. But this very style means certain inconveniences. The doors don't properly close (although they securely lock), the bathroom opens to the garden through a screen door that is also somewhat porous, the roof is partly thatch. As a result, too much of the garden entered my room for my taste: mosquitos, ants, a dragonfly, a gecko. Another stylish inconvenience is the fact that the walkway to the entry is paved in uneven flagstones that you cannot wheel a suitcase down. Staircases to the upper level rooms are awkward. Then, you can only check wifi in the restaurant/pool area (mosquitos). The pool is nice, but only c. 9x18x4 feet, yet very heavily frequented by the guests (this tells you something about the lack of large swimming pools in Kanchanaburi). The staff speaks little English; although they are helpful, they don't make it their business to have a lot of tourist-oriented information. I compared the comparably priced Apple's Guesthouse. There too, the front desk did not speak English; there was no pool and the rooms did not have fridges. So I stayed put, and did after all sleep well at the Ploy after buying a mosquito plug.

We arrived at the bus station where we called Ploy for the free pick up service. We waited about 15 - 20 minutes. We had a upstairs tv room. Staff helped us with bringing the luggage to the room. Room was big and clean. Tours can be booked at the guest house which is in a street with bars, laundry service, drug store, supermarket, seven eleven, massage and restaurants. Within walking distance to the night market. Staff barely speaks English and didn't understand our question about what to do nearby the guest house. When we checked out, we've arranged a mini van to pick us up. So we told the staff that we were waiting for the mini bus. He thought that we wanted to go to the bus station and said 50 Baht. We had also stored our luggage behind the reception and I wanted to have my luggage. He didn't understand and I had to point to the back of the reception. Wifi is only available in the restaurant. So we had to google in the restaurant to find out that there is a night market nearby. We didn't use the pool but we've seen that you have to pay 20 Baht for a pool towel since a room towel is not allowed at the pool. There is actually not much to do in Kanchanaburi. I would actually recommend to take a day tour from Bangkok instead of going to Kanchanaburi. A lot of travel agencies around so we didn't booked a tour at the hotel.

This is a nice guesthouse located just off the main strip of Kanchanaburi. It is surrounded by bars, shops and restaurants.

The guesthouse has nice grounds and an amazing "infinity" pool overlooking the river. The rooms are spacious with an ensuite bathroom (with hot water).

Breakfast is included (toast & jam). If you like pancakes or eggs, they are available for a surcharge. All in all great value for money.

Staff doesn't speak a lot of English but are very friendly and helpfull.

Good value rooms, with complimentary breakfast: toast with jam and coffee and tea.
We stayed 3 nights in a double room with air-conditioning on the first floor.

The room was fine, with a large bathroom with hot water. Everything was clean, not only in the rooms but throughout the guesthouse.
Only drawback of the room is that it lacks proper ventilation. As a result, after we had taken a short shower the room was quite humid. Besides it rained during our stay and our clothes did not dry. More fresh air was needed, but it was not possible to keep the door open due to the mosquitoes.

The swimming pool is wonderful, with a view on the river. This is also the place where breakfast is served.

This guesthouse is situated right in the middle of the guesthouse area and so it’s a short walk to all the other restaurants. You can even walk to the bridge over the river Kwai, it takes only 20 minutes to half an hour.

the website made it sound like we'd have an outdoor shower, we didn't we have a couple of trees in the room, it was a nice room, but not such a big deal. it was clean, but the a/c had tons of dirt and so we kept sneezing throughout the night. the people aren't very friendly, they aren't unfriendly but you're basically invisible to them. the location was great, the breakfast was good - the pancakes were great, but the coffee left much to be desired.

We (wife, my parents and yours truly) stayed here for two nights to go to Hellfire Pass Memorial Museum and travel back from there via train over Bridge on the River Kwai. Room was up to Guesthouse standard and bed extremely comfortable. Infinity pool and dining area down by the river is the jewel in Ploy's crown. Staff were extremely helpful and organised a driver to take us up to Hellfire Pass and back to Nam Tok Station to catch train back to Kanchanaburi over the River Kwai. You won't be disappointed with Ploy if a great value Guesthouse is what your budget demands.

Room Tip: Ask for a Garden Room behind reception.
