“Comfortable Stay and Good Value”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 27, 2010

River Kwai Hotel is a good and recommended hotel. It is clean, convinient and the staffs are friendly and helpful. They speak decent English which is delightful. The hotel is near to 7-eleven, banks, money changer and restaurants. All amenities you can expect in the hotel, Great Swimming Pool, Spa and Night Club. Walking distance to Train and Bus station. It is a good and satisfying stay at Kanchanaburi, and would recommend to family and friends.

The hotel is close to the War Cemetery and Bridge on the River Kwai. However, it is far (40-50km) from the Death Railway, Elephant camps, and waterfalls. In terms of the hotel itself, once you leave the lobby, the place is a "dump". The hallways need repair and the rooms need serious updating. The internet routers are stapled against the hallway walls. Worst yet--my wife was bit by BED BUGS. We did not notice the bites until a few days after we left the hotel (there is an incubation period before the bites surface on the skin). We also noticed the linens and sheets were on the floor in the supply room. Maybe this is where the bed bugs nest in order to get onto the linens and bed sheets. The breakfast restaurant located in the lobby was fine and the food was good and the staff very friendly! My wife and I have been to Thailand many times and stayed in much better hotels for the same price. I would NOT recommend this hotel, especially when there are others available at the same price.

Nice room with good breakfast and elevators. Sister hotel was right next door at less than half the price. No breakfast or elevators though.

We paid $25 with brekkie a night. The rooms are tired but they are big and clean and
everything in them works. The bed is big and comfy and the wifi is free and works in your room. I didnt swim in it but the pool looked great. Breakfast was ok all the choices but
just average. The staff were friendly and helped us with anything we asked. Turn
right when you leave the hotel and its a 10 minute walk to the cemetary. There is a fantastic museam called the Death Railway and Research Centre across the road from
here, the train station is also across the road . All other sights are a long way away and not many taxis around.

Tip check the bar out across the road from the hotel. Cheap drinks(all kept on ice) air
conditioned bar if you want to sit inside good pool table and good conversation.

We caught the train from Bangkok to Kanchanburi it costs 100 baht and only takes about
2 hours. Really good trip. You catch it from the Thonburi Railway Station.

Arrived at 10 o clock in the morning expecting to have to wait for our room but the reception staff told us no problem and within ten minutes we were in our room.
The hotel room could be described as looking a bit tired, particularly the bathroom. Everything worked, however, and the shower was hot and the a/c was ok.
Breakfast was on a buffet style and although there wasn't loads of choice it was edible and helped to set us up for the day.
There is a disco and a karaoke bar at the front of the hotel which attracted hundreds of young Thais at the weekend although as we were at the rear of the hotel there was no problem with noise.
The location was good in that it was close to the military cemetery and the death railway museum. It is a bit of a walk to the bridge and the busy street close to this but we saw this as a positive rather than a negative.
There is a great Thai restaurant across the street from the hotel which is well worth a visit. The night market and bus station are also in close proximity.
Unfortunately for us we only discovered the pool on our last day because it was excellent. The water was clean and very warm and the hotel provides free towels for the sunbeds.
Overall, taking into account how much we paid, the hotel was great value for money.

I guess for what it costs one can't expect too much but this place was the pits. Well and truly past its hey day. It is not near any of the areas attractions, staff were not friendly or helpful, excessive mould in the bathroom, terrible selection at breakfast. Not sure how it gets the rating it has. If you want to stay in town you would be far better off at one of the many guesthouses closer to the Bridge. If you want to stay in a nice hotel I suggest going for one of the resort style ones out of town.
