Very nice place to stay if you are exploring Kanchanaburi and surrounding areas for a couple of days. It is next to the River Kwai and approx. 20 mins drive to Kanchanaburi town. Taxis and trips are easily arranged by owners or staff; anything is possible. They will give you several (realistic) suggestions and options (eg private car for the day or fully organised tour) and are very helpful (not pushy). The owners and their family are living on the resort as well, which gives it a personal feel as you get to see part of their daily routine with children playing or going to school.

Rooms are spacious, and tastefully furnished with eye for detail. Because there were no family cottages available when we booked, one extra bed and a toddler cot were added in a standard cottage, and there was still enough room left (although closet space was somewhat tight). Bathroom is spacious and nice as well, but water pressure was a bit low in the shower. For the telly addicts amongst you: no satellite tv... Only local tv and a DVD-player (you can borrow DVDs freely in the lobby as long as you put them back afterwards...).
All cottages are surrounded by a nicely landscaped tropical garden (with hammocks, a swing in a corner, possibility to play football or badminton, etc). The swimming pool is not very large, but I'd say sufficient for guests of twelve cottages to take a dip now and then. Sunbeds and towels are available.

We loved sitting on the lobby/restaurant terrace overlooking the river Kwai, especially when having breakfast. Of course the Dutch pancakes were a nice surprise for a Dutch family living abroad! We also had dinner there twice and the (Thai) food was delicious and tasteful for good prices. In the weeks after our stay here, we dined in a wide range of restaurants throughout the country, but this one certainly had some of the tastiest dishes.

Even though Oriental Kwai is not specifically 'designed' for families, it is one of the most child-friendly places I have been at. I don't mean in terms of safety gates, car seats or kids clubs, but it is an ideal place for (young!) children to run and play around safely because it is such a small and personal set-up. Staff is always friendly and helpful, and the whole atmosphere is very relaxed.

We would certainly recommend this Resort to other travellers. The bungalows are exquisite, the owners and staff are all extremely helpful and cheerful, we were treated with courtesy from the moment we arrived in the taxi, nothing was too much trouble. Anything you want can be arranged, excursions, trips etc. We had the use of a taxi driver for a full day who took us to wherever we wanted to go. It is so very peaceful and relaxing watching the River Kwai from the restaurant balcony at night. The food is delicious and beautifully presented, a good choice and very reasonably priced. The pool area is lovely, sunbeds towels and umbrellas and drinks service are all available. The grounds are beautifully maintained as are all the bungalows and public areas. This is a true paradise hideaway, we will certainly be back. Thanks to Djo and Evelien, you have made your resort a most beautiful Thai Oasis of peace and tranquility.

We decided to visit Kanchanaburi for 2 days after reading the Oriental Kwai reviews and seeing the pictures. It ended up to be the best of part of the 2 weeks trip that took us to Bangkok, Phuket and Kuala Lumpur.
Staying in the Oriental Kwai felt like visiting the Gardens of Eden, the nature is so beautiful, and the staff are just like angels. We rook one of the hotel’s scheduled day trips (mainly to the Erewan National Park, elephant ride and the bridge over river Kwai) and that way beyond expectations. We really had a lot of fun, and next time we think of Thailand we will plan for atleast a week at the Oriental Kwai.
Thank you Evelien & Djo.

Thanks to tripadvisor, we made it to Kanchanburi - primarily because the reviews of Oriental Kwai were so inviting, and we wanted to experience it. And it was well worth the detour. We spent just 3 nites here, and though out of town a bit, after a grueling day of travel from Bangkok, it was great to arrive in this calm, serene oasis on the River Kwai. We relaxed and swam, ate at the Inn where the food was great and reasonably priced, took a day trip to see the sights, and visited the local massage "temple" that Evelyn had recommended. The individual bungalows were lovely, decorated simply but with attention to detail; The resort is relatively new. Every detail had been taken care of by owners Evelyn and Joe, and we appreciated it all. We'll be back when we visit Thailand next!

My wife and I spent 5 days here and it was the perfect break. I've not felt so relaxed in a long time, dining on simple but excellent dishes, overlooking the River Kwai. The chefs specialities are creative and very good.

The pool is small but great - a deep end and wading area and a kids paddling area. The chalets are spread out across the property so there is privacy and no noise. Everything is manicured by the groundstaff and cleaners every day.

There are a number of local tours to choose from (provided by local companies) so you don't need to do any planning if you don't want to - just turn up and your life is made easy.

I can't wait to go back!

We found the Oriental Kwai online and liked the look of it right away. We were going to be in Thailand for a conference, and were looking for a place to celebrate our anniversary once the conference was over. We like 'hidden gems' and this is one for sure. We wanted a unique, smaller place where we could relax but also have fun things to do in the area. We weren't disappointed. From the casual elegance of the decor to the cleanliness of everything to the smiling and helpful staff to the friendly family dogs who visited us every morning while we sat drinking coffee on the veranda overlooking the River Kwai...this was the perfect place for us. Their restaurant food is really good (be sure to try thai roti with tuna/cashews and the papaya salad). The couple who own it are part of what makes it such a great place. Took a canoe trip down the Kwai, visited the Hellfire Pass memorial, rode elephants, and had an incredible four and a half hours at a nearby spa for an unbelievable price (can't remember the name of it, but believe me, it was great - it's noted on their website). Would love to go back if we ever make it to Thailand again. There's more to do in the area than we had time for. Highly recommend this to anyone who cares to ask. If at all possible, ask for the #1 cottage with the river view.
