We stayed some nights at this guesthouse in a small and simple bungalow with aircon. The colourfull bathroom has a glass ceiling which gives you the feeling of an open-air bathroom, we liked it. The location is very good, directly at the mainroad with a lot of restaurants around. Service was not at it's best, but okay.

I don't consider myself to be a backpacker (my suitcase has wheels), but I was looking for something cheap whilst travelling in a group of 6 friends. I gave this place a call on the way up to Kanchanaburi from Bangkok. We got three log cabins right down on the riverside (cabins look out onto a backwater of the Kwai, but it is still very nice). Make sure you ask for these rooms as there are a good number of rooms on the land which are in a different style. Rooms were spacious, clean and comfortable. Excellent location. I was a bit worried about being so close to the 'farang' bars as it's a side of Thailand I'm not interested in. But most of them were empty when we were there in January. There is some excellent street food available on the road outside the guesthouse (turn right and look for the papaya salad stall about 5 minutes down the road - excellent) along with lots of Thai kitchens serving traditional favourites: Pad Thai, Pad Siewe, Khao Tom, etc. And it was very pleasant to sit outside our room with a beer. There is a 7-11 close by where you can buy the anti-mosquito coils which were very effective. There were quite a few other people staying at Sam's Guesthouse when we were there. They were all polite and quiet.

Room Tip: Ask for a log cabin on the river right at the end of the walk way.

The first room we originally booked, the lock wasn't working, so we changed to a different cabin. After coming back from a meal out in Kanchanaburi, the plumbing in the wet room decided to play up so we changed to yet again another room!

Despite that, the view over the River Kwai from our third - and final - cabin was stunning, but with scary wildlife (Big Spider) scaring my girlfriend in the morning be prepared due to location. Please note, spider wasn't in the shower room, but between the window and shutter.

The location is great. Spoilt for choice with restaurants and convenience stores. Plus you can get your feet massaged by fish a lot cheaper than the niche boutiques you see popping up in the UK!

Night time was peaceful, plus hearing the crickets and wildlife outside was a nice novelty for us.

Ok for one night. Sam's girlfriend wasn't keen on helping us, or it simply wasn't her day.

If you are expecting better than pack packers standards don't stay at SAMs, it is cheap but you only get what you pay for. Complex is rather run down. We rented the Jasmin cabin and there were holes in the walls where termites had eaten through. Sheets were discolored with holes in them. There are no extras provided we even had to ask for blankets.

We found staff spoke reasonable English and were helpfull

We would not stay here again

Room Tip: Location is zgood central to eating and shops

Disappointed by this place. They didn't have our booking when we arrived (even though we booked over a week in advance) so we got a twin room rather than a double. It didn't have a view of any kind and was in more of a swamp than the river. The kids, dogs and lack of bedding were all a bit of an annoyance. You just felt that you were an intruder in someone else's home, rather than a guest. Think we will stick to our usual haunt next time we are in Kanchanaburi (unfortunately it was fully booked for New Year)

Room Tip: Book one of the top 5 on tripadvisor NOT this place!

We have booked a bungalow room for three people through Agoda. On arrival the reception, women couldn't understand much English and Thai gave us a room with one bed and a mat. I said we booked a room for three adults, twin beds with one extra bed. Later on we met the owner and he told us the mat is supposed for a child only, we should book the room on his website as we can book room with three beds. He run this place for ten years, we were the first people who complaint ed about the mat. Thai people are easy going....people with too much complaints no good, he felt very unhappy and headache.... What you pay is what you get, if we pay VIP price, we get VIP service. I pointed to him that what we have booked was one room for three people, adults, which included an extra BED, not a mat on the floor. He said there's nothing he could do on Agoda website, we could pay extra 300 bahts for a 3 beds room. He couldn't make money and we're not logic to criticise that.

The guesthouse was surrounded by over-grown weeds or plants, the room itself was tiny even for two people, it's dark and the bamboo wall were covered with stains, the bathroom was very run down need upgrading, water pressure was slow, water became lukewarm once when it was turned up. The worst part was the air con, it was set to (or maybe because it was too old) a power saving mode, so it turned on and turned off constantly, each time it created a big noise. At the end we had to turn it off in order to stop the noise. It was the worst night we had for the ten days in Thailand( we stayed at six places). Terrible experience!

Room Tip: Go somewhere else!
