“Pleasantly surprised!”

Taweechai Elephant Camp
Reviewed December 28, 2013 via mobile

Pleasantly surprised at how well the elephants appeared to be looked after. Kids had a great time in the river with the elephants even though the river was cold. The elephant camp was well priced with no pushing by the staff for tips. Finished the morning with a great Thai lunch right next to the camp.

Absolutely loved our time bathing with the elephants. She did everything on command and if you like being dumped into water it was great fun. I didn't like seeing the elephants chained up and my daughter didn't particularly enjoy the bareback ride back up from the river but overall a great experience. Make sure you take a change of clothes and a towel. I wouldn't wear swimmers without shorts over the top and a T shirt, the elephants skin is a bit rough! you will also need mozzie spray. Change rooms were not particularly clean Not really an activity for those who are not competent swimmers

Elsewhere in Thailand, elephant camps feature animals who are trained to work in the forests. Not the case here. This is strictly for tourist consumption. There is a ride on the elephants. Halfway through there is a stop while the mahouts take multiple photos using your camera. Remember that when tip time rolls around. This comes after the ride continues through the river. After the ride there is a little show with a number of elephant tricks. Of course this is followed by another opportunity for a gratuity. Better, I think, in the camps where the animals are making a contribution other than entertaining tourists.

Another amazing experience while in Kanchanaburi. Thailand. We went for a ride through the jungle and had the opportunity to bath the elephants but opted instead to ride a raft down the river. My impression of the elephant bathing was that we would be standing next to them with a brush but this was not the case. Some of our friends opted for the elephant washing and we passed them on the river having a great time sitting on top of the elephants while they completely submerged and stayed down for quite some time, If I had it to do over again I would definitely choose the option to bathe the elephants. All in all a very memorable experience.

Simply stated, "Amazing".

We were a group of 4 adults and 3 children under 10 years old. We arrived a little after 8 am. 2 of our group didn't want to bathe with the elephants but the manager was great and kept us together in one group. We started off with about a 40 min ride through some light jungle. We made our way to the river where we were all given life jackets and then proceeded to enter the water on the backs of the elephants. I'm not sure who had the most fun at this point...us...or the elephants. They ducked under the water drenching us, then re-emerged squirting us with water as we gently scrubbed their heads.

The handlers were polite and friendly and certainly did NOT mistreat the elephants. The whole experience lasted about an hour and cost 1050 thai baht and 850 THB for each adult and child respectively. Totally worth it!!!
