“Good quality, good location”
Reviewed May 29, 2012

I spent one night at the Felix, arriving late to Kanchanaburi and not knowing where to sleep.
It's a big, expansive hotel with many different facilities and a bit older in the decor, but very well maintained and well run with excellent friendly staff. Some big places which cater mostly to tour groups tend to be lacking on the service/quality side, but I found the Felix not to have that problem.
From checkin to restaurant service to the bell boys everyone was welcoming, friendly, and went out of their way to please.
The room I had was with river view and a nice terrace. Well maintained and clean.
Breakfast buffet had great variety and was very good with both western and asian specialties.
Only one suggestion - get some western TV channels. There was only one English movie channel which shut off around 11pm. Otherwise a nice, relaxing experience.
The grounds are very nicely kept too - green tropical garden views from just about every window.
The pool is also well kept and almost olympic size, with a view overlooking the river.
All in all, it was a good pick for a short trip. Hasslefree, friendly, and relaxing

Room Tip: Ask for the river view rooms. A bit more expensive but worth having the terrace with view right on t...

There is not a whole lot going on in Kanchanaburi, however this hotel is a bit far away from the main town. My boyfriend and I walked over the bridge over the river Kwai (a bit of a novelty) to get to town but it is a decent walk. Taxi drivers charge you more for this hotel as it is further away from the main strip.
The hotel is a bit dated, but I think a lot of the hotels around Kanchanaburi are.
The breakfast was buffet style, a mix of western and Asian foods. A bit random.
Something we found strange was they tried to charge us for a bottle of water from the mini bar because they found an empty one in the bathroom (that we had bought from 7 eleven), we had to argue that they needed to check their inventory, not go on empty bottles.
The standard of service was not really amazing.

Clearly this was once a grand resort, however appears to have languished in recent years and some parts of the hotel are a bit dilapidated.

Pros:
- Large clean rooms with river facing balconies, shaded from the afternoon sun (thankfully).
- Huge, spotlessly cleaned bathroom with semi-modern features.
- Very close to Kwai Bridge, an excellent shortcut into town (be careful crossing at night - not advised)
- Out of town, therefore very quiet & peaceful during the day.
- Large lagoon pool with swim up bar, albeit the pool needs a good clean to rid the green tinge from within it!

Cons
- No in-room internet, VERY limited TV channel selection
- Rooms & hotel in general need a facelift
- Can get noisy at night - incredibly loud tourist party boats are towed up the river late at night which has the potential to disturb even heavy sleepers such as myself.

The food at the hotel was decent and well priced, and the staff helpful and attentive. This is an ideal spot for a couple of days if you are in town for ANZAC Day (as we were) and to visit other local attractions.

Stayed here while on Kumuka Tour. This hotel could again be great but now is in need of a face lift. Good sized rooms and good pools and fitness centre on site. The saving grace is the location on the bank of the River Kwae and short walk to the Bridge. There are several small decks and swings installed along the river bank which is a good thought. Serevice was fine, as was the breakfast food. Kanchanaburi appears to have a large population of caucasian ex-pats who certainly add some colour! to the town. The War Cemetary is superbly maintained and the Death Railway Museum and JEATH Museum are both worthwhile visits.

The hotel is beautiful and the setting, by the river, is wonderful. However, having stayed here 2 years ago and loved it, we were very disappointed. The hotel ‘s main focus now is business conventions, and each day they are catering for hundreds of delegates. Tourists are very much of secondary importance . Sad!

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the river. Room 212 has a beautiful, large, shaded balcony.

Hotel Location is the selling point of this hotel. It took us approx 10 mins to walk to the Bridge. Just over the Bridge are restaurants etc. There isn't very much hotel side of Bridge. We had a pleasant meal in The Floating Restaurant, which I would say was more like a cafe. Food very reasonably priced.

I would not recommend walking back over the Bridge after dark though, due to the dogs that guard the closed market stalls. My friend was bitten by one of these dogs. They hotel, and the Manager were absolutely brilliant, and took us to the hospital and helped with the translation etc. They even took my friend back the next day to have dressings changed and would not accept any money for doing this.

There are a lot of staff at hotel ,and hotel does seem quiet, although clean - it could do with some modernisation. That did not bother us particularly as we were only there for 2 nights. Breakfast was ok, you can find something to eat - even if all foods may not appeal to you.

There was an issue with checking in, as they were not aware that Hotels.com were part of Expedia - and the booking had not been sent through to them. The Manager spent a lot of time in getting this sorted for us.

Hotel shuttle into town for 2 persons was 180 baht one way. Hotel taxi to Bangkok airport 4500 baht, we found a taxi in town that did it for 2800 baht. You probably could get it cheaper, but we left it a bit late to shop around. For those adventurous ones out there - you can get the shuttle from bus station to Victory Monument for about 400 baht inc cases. Not sure how you would go about getting to airport from there though, which is why we stuck with taxi. Maybe next time we will research more and give it a go!!

Room Tip: We overlooked the river, which was lovely and very quiet.
