Felix River Kwai Resort - Kanchanaburi
Ranked #7 of 81 Hotels in Kanchanaburi
Reviewed May 11, 2012

Clearly this was once a grand resort, however appears to have languished in recent years and some parts of the hotel are a bit dilapidated.

Pros:
- Large clean rooms with river facing balconies, shaded from the afternoon sun (thankfully).
- Huge, spotlessly cleaned bathroom with semi-modern features.
- Very close to Kwai Bridge, an excellent shortcut into town (be careful crossing at night - not advised)
- Out of town, therefore very quiet & peaceful during the day.
- Large lagoon pool with swim up bar, albeit the pool needs a good clean to rid the green tinge from within it!

Cons
- No in-room internet, VERY limited TV channel selection
- Rooms & hotel in general need a facelift
- Can get noisy at night - incredibly loud tourist party boats are towed up the river late at night which has the potential to disturb even heavy sleepers such as myself.

The food at the hotel was decent and well priced, and the staff helpful and attentive. This is an ideal spot for a couple of days if you are in town for ANZAC Day (as we were) and to visit other local attractions.

Stayed here while on Kumuka Tour. This hotel could again be great but now is in need of a face lift. Good sized rooms and good pools and fitness centre on site. The saving grace is the location on the bank of the River Kwae and short walk to the Bridge. There are several small decks and swings installed along the river bank which is a good thought. Serevice was fine, as was the breakfast food. Kanchanaburi appears to have a large population of caucasian ex-pats who certainly add some colour! to the town. The War Cemetary is superbly maintained and the Death Railway Museum and JEATH Museum are both worthwhile visits.

The hotel is beautiful and the setting, by the river, is wonderful. However, having stayed here 2 years ago and loved it, we were very disappointed. The hotel ‘s main focus now is business conventions, and each day they are catering for hundreds of delegates. Tourists are very much of secondary importance . Sad!

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the river. Room 212 has a beautiful, large, shaded balcony.

Hotel Location is the selling point of this hotel. It took us approx 10 mins to walk to the Bridge. Just over the Bridge are restaurants etc. There isn't very much hotel side of Bridge. We had a pleasant meal in The Floating Restaurant, which I would say was more like a cafe. Food very reasonably priced.

I would not recommend walking back over the Bridge after dark though, due to the dogs that guard the closed market stalls. My friend was bitten by one of these dogs. They hotel, and the Manager were absolutely brilliant, and took us to the hospital and helped with the translation etc. They even took my friend back the next day to have dressings changed and would not accept any money for doing this.

There are a lot of staff at hotel ,and hotel does seem quiet, although clean - it could do with some modernisation. That did not bother us particularly as we were only there for 2 nights. Breakfast was ok, you can find something to eat - even if all foods may not appeal to you.

There was an issue with checking in, as they were not aware that Hotels.com were part of Expedia - and the booking had not been sent through to them. The Manager spent a lot of time in getting this sorted for us.

Hotel shuttle into town for 2 persons was 180 baht one way. Hotel taxi to Bangkok airport 4500 baht, we found a taxi in town that did it for 2800 baht. You probably could get it cheaper, but we left it a bit late to shop around. For those adventurous ones out there - you can get the shuttle from bus station to Victory Monument for about 400 baht inc cases. Not sure how you would go about getting to airport from there though, which is why we stuck with taxi. Maybe next time we will research more and give it a go!!

Room Tip: We overlooked the river, which was lovely and very quiet.

Great place to unwind relax. All rooms garden side riverside very scenic. Well maintained lawns flower beds. Super food spread for b fast. One significant drawback is the fact that language is not understood by the reception. Room safe and locker flimsy. Can be easily opened. Just one long screw. So did not inspire safety. Tours desk not good enough, no maps no guidance. All these issues get paled when u stay in the calm serene atmosphere of this lovely resort. Also kanchanaburi has historical tourism. But do not go to tiger temple for reasons u can find on the net. Location average since once in the resort closest town area not accessible without transport from resort staff.

We went to Kanchanaburi for the AMA Adenture Race, where the organisers had booked all the runners into the Felix. Although a little old the Felix is a lovely place to spend a couple of days. The riverside location is serene, our room looked right onto the river, a stones throw away from our balcony, on the other side of the bank is undeveloped forest. We got connecting rooms for us and the kids. The food in the restaurant and room service was yummy and cheap. The staff are attentive and the rooms big and clean.
The resort backs onto the famous Bridge over the River Kwai, which you can walk over to have lunch at one of the floating restaurants on the other side. They have a kiddies train that departs regularly which the little ones loved.
We drove further out of town, a little over an hour I think to see Hellfire Pass Museum. It's well worth a visit, I shed a number of tears listening to the audio, being down on the old rail track. It's hot, not for the (little) kids and take decent walking shoes.
I'm sure there are more elegant options at the River Kwai but you just can't beat the position and the outlook of this lovely resort. And it's a bargain.
