We took a rail trip from Kwai Yai to Nam dtok ( Nam Dtok is Thai for waterfall) which includes going over the bridge. It took about 4 hours there and back. Cost for Thais 16 baht cost for foreigners 100 baht ONE way. Ate a delicious lunch in a local restaurant and then walked around the grounds of the waterfall. Beautiful until it poured with rain. A really pleasant day out.

We did this as part of a tour so our ticket was included in the package *worth noting* - when you are on th etrain you could bein what they call a better class carriage and then try to charge you an additional 100 bhat. The carriages are all the saem so you can move down / up one or two carriages and have exactly the same experience.
The journey winds through the river valley and provides some nice views, particularly as you approach the river and bridge - sit on the right hand side of the cariage so you can see the approach to the bridge. We found this a comfortable and enjoyable trip - recommended.

Today took the train from khanchanaburi to nam tok. Took the last train but still busy. It is nice but not spectacular. The only spectacular view is when you cross the wooden bridge. This takes 2 minutes on a 2 hour trip. If you take this trip start at the main station. The train gets crowded with tourists on the next stop just in front of the bridge.

So we were thrilled about the death railway and it was nice, and the views are great but it is way too long and the view doesn't change. It takes about 2 hours for each direction and it was just too much.

The trip along the river valley is spectacular as the track is set high up on the hillside. Don't forget the history of the place though as the line was constructed with the blood, sweat, tears and lives of many prisoners of war.
