“Great for relaxing family holidays”

Denis and Nhi are fantastic and hospitable hosts. Denis advises and helps arrange things to do around the area. Nhi's cooking is second to none and at very affordable prices. Xanadu is located on the river. We spent almost all our time at the swimming pool next to the main restaurant/bar. I think better use could be made of the close proximity to the River Kwai as it's so close dragging a deck chair with a book and beer (slightly cheaper would sell way more) is sheer bliss.

There's plenty to do nearby. The local feel of the nearby village market drew us on several occasions. Spend a late afternoon/evening t the river next to the village; have a message (they'll fetch you); spend a day at the falls; visit the museum and bridge etc.

We stayed with three kids (12, 10 & 7 - who rated Xanadu best hotel) in adjoining rooms. The rooms we stayed in could do with a makeover (more comfy beds, updated furniture, a little more space) as can the showers. I suspect that the newer rooms may address these shortcoming so would suggest skiing for them. Would we go back? Definitely!

We stayed at Xanadu in June 2013 as part of our honeymoon and we had such a wonderful time.
Dennis and Nee are superb hosts and from arrival certainly make you feel like you're home from home. The setting, just along the Kwai river, is so peaceful and relaxing ... Although you're away from the main town we felt it so tranquil and relaxing. Their pool is stunning as is the food....Nee is the best cook (and we ate a lot of dishes on our trip!)
Thank you so much for making our stay so lovely. Only thing I would say ( to have got an excellent rating) would be bedside reading lamps!
Thanks for a great stay and I'm still thinking about the fruti and yoghut bowl!

We stayed at Xanadu for 3 nights in June of 2013 and considered our stay at Xanadu as one of the most memorable periods of our month long Thailand trip! While we expected a clean pool and bungalows, lush vegetation and access to the Kwai River, we did not expect to feel so rapidly part of the Xanadu family...Our hosts, Dennis and Nee, have the particular ability to make their guests feel welcome and at home, but yet to give them the space they need to feel comfortable. Xanadu will deliver what you are looking for, wether that is romance and intimacy or friendship and shared experiences; the "table of knowledge" and Dennis' "shaky hands" are particularly conducive to social interactions!!!

Finally, we wish to highlight the excellence of the food offered at Xanadu; the Massaman curry and the spicy seafood salad were especially tasty. While we tried to find comparable food quality during the last 3 weeks of our trip, we did not achieve this objective. I suggest to visit Xanadu at the end of your trip to avoid being consistently left more or less disapointed with the meals you will enjoy after the Xanadu experience.

I very highly recommend this resort.

We couldn't have been happier with our stay at the Xanadu! The room was clean and spacious, the setting was beautiful away from the bustle of Kanchanaburi and there was plenty of wildlife to spot (it is right on the river). From the moment that we got there Denis and Nee looked after us, with wonderful food and hospitality. They arranged a day tour for us (at 7pm the night before) and even accommodated my request to watch the F1 at 1am (seriously, that was a big deal to me)! On the day that we left Denis even came into town with us to make sure that we got on to the right minibus for the next leg of our journey. A wonderful place to stay, we couldn't recommend it more. Ps. Try the spring rolls, they are awesome and famous in the US!

Stayed here with my boyfriend in April for the first 3 days of our trip around Thailand. Dennis and Nee were lovely hosts and we both loved our break here.

It is a little far from Kanchanaburi but is easy and cheap to get to the centre and shows that there is more to Thailand than beaches, We caught a taxi from Bangkok which was £30-£40 and caught the train back which is well worth doing.

The rooms here are basic but clean, the resort has a lovely pool and a very relaxing atmopshere. Food is great, and the gin and tonics very strong ;)

I charmed by the name of the resort in the reviews that I read before arriving, coupled with the solemn history of WW2 that Kanchanaburi oozes. What really surprised me was how close the scenic beauty of this place was to the lyrical magic exuded by Coleridge's masterpiece Kubla Khan - the poem which inspired the resort's name. Much like the Chinese warlords pleasure dome Xanadu, which had bewitched people over the centuries, Dennis and Nee Compton's resort takes you back in time, where the soft gurgling of the river flowing by the place whispers into your ears of a time long gone by, where the verdant greenery soothes the parched soul and the vibrant blossoms and chirping birds put a song in your heart.

Dennis is a perfect host and the term guest here actually means just that - he will put you at ease and cater to your every whim. The food captures the soul of Thai cuisine and dont shy away if you like your noodle broth fiery - he can crank up the heat if thats your thing! The quaint restaurant by the pool provides the perfect setting for an after dinner conversation and I can proudly say that I have friends - and not just passing acquaintances - with some great conversation with a very interesting set of patrons that such a place off the beaten track usually attract.

Dont think any further than Xanadu if you're ducking into Kwai - you might just be inspired into penning some verses of your own!

I had an enjoyable three nights with Denis and Nee. I chose Xanadu because of the good reviews and I've decided there's not much more I can add. If you want a quiet place in pleasant surroundings then Xanadu is the place for you. Denis and Nee are the perfect hosts making everyone feel part of a family. The food is excellent, the rooms are clean and comfortable, the gardens are lovely. You can't go wrong when a Scarlet Backed Flower Pecker also chooses to nest at Xanadu.
