“Clean and friendly, but a little remote”
Reviewed November 4, 2012

We took the train from Bangkok to Kanchanaburi, and following the instructions on Thai Garden Inn's web site, we got off at the River Kwai station. We were the only passengers who got off there, and it took us a while to get a tuk tuk to the hotel. However, the tuk tuk driver knew the location of the hotel.

Check in was hassle free, and the cabin we got was, as requested, a double bedded air conditioned one. It was clean and the room had been freshly made up. The room had a safe, a mini fridge, and plenty of storage. WiFi was available in our room, and we had no problems uploading photos to Facebook and making Skype calls.

The location is a little away from the main town, which could be an advantage if you are looking for an extremely quiet evening. It is about a 15 minute walk to the restaurants and shops in town. However, the road was extremely deserted, and the last 500 meters to the hotel passes by some agricultural land and is not at all well lit. We made it a point to be back by about 9 PM -- any later and we would suggest that you take a tuk tuk from town.

Reception was friendly and chatty, and they arranged a tour to the surrounding areas for us. The tour was one of the best we've ever taken, and I don't think we could have done all the sites on our own.

Breakfast was the standard toast and eggs -- not bad, but nothing exciting. Our tour left at 8:00 AM, and they served us breakfast at about 7:45 AM -- we were comfortably done in 10 minutes.

The hotel also booked us on a mini bus to Ayutthaya. The bus picked us up at the hotel and dropped us at the hotel in Ayutthaya.

As someone else has mentioned, do try the Thai grill ("Moo Kata") place in town. You get an amazing spread for 109 Baht, and working the grill on your table is great fun!

Thank you for your review. The next time you disembark at River Kwai station, give us a call and we will run you to our hotel for free.

We do note about the road lighting. Unfortunately it is not up to us. We have discussed with multiple authorities here but none could ever give us any answer. But no worries, there are plenty of tut tuts around that will take you back to the hotel in the evenings.

The rooms and scenery of the Thai Garden Inn are lovely and quiet and there is a nice pool. Nice bungalows with minibar and airco. Thai Garden Inn is close enough to the city center but yet very peaceful. There are also bikes available to cruise town and the river Kwai. We liked our stay there and would go back if ever again in that region!

We had however the unfortunate experience to be in a purse snatching which caused quite a hassle. No need to be afraid, it is not a dangerous area, I guess I just had bad luck... The owners, a lovely warm and social couple, were very helpful and friendly! They did everything in their power to assist and made the whole experience a lot better to handle instantly. They were sooooo sweet, I am very thankful to them, they are a genuine nice couple, who are in this bussiness with their heart and not just for the money.

So if you want a nice nature scenery, with pool and a friendly atmosphere at a fair price, they are your address in Kanchanaburi!

We stayed here this month. This was such a treat after the craziness of Bangkok. It was gentle and serne with gorgeous gardens. My teenage sons just chilled and didn't want to go anywhere for the rest of the day and evening. Now that's a commendation! They have a lovely dinning area and really nice food. Simple, fresh and tasty. Lovely pool and great cabins. A bit like we have in NZ camping grounds. Another bonus was the ability to do your laundry - a must when travelling with teenagers!!! We enjoyed being out of town and hired motor scooters for the time we were there to get a round. You can do this from the guest house. Easy to do and a good place to zip around. We only had two nights here and wished we had stayed longer. Would definately come back here.

This is our first time visiting Kanchanaburi, we live in Bangkok and wanted a little get away and so after much deliberation we booked at the Thai Garden Inn. When our bus arrived from Bangkok into kanchanaburi bus station the taxi knew where Thai Garden Inn was straight away, I wasn't expecting this as usually with so many guest houses they can't be expected to know them all. He gave us the price of 150baht straight away and then drove us to the hotel in the taxi which was one of their song teaw trucks. The journey took around 10 minutes. When we arrived at Thai Garden Inn the receptionist was very friendly and check in was easy. She explained to us about breakfast and lead us to our bungalow.
The bungalow was clean and well furnished and supplied all the basics. I didn't think to check when booking though and realised then that there were no tv's in the room, which leaves the room feeling a little quiet in the evenings.
The first evening we ate at the complex restaurant for convenience, the portion sizes were good and the meals freshly made. The restaurant is open all day until last order at 9pm. After dinner we took a tuktuk to the main road to explore. The hotel called the tuktuk for us and it arrived in a few minutes and charged 20b per person.
The complimentary breakfast is basic but enough, tea or coffee, fruit juice, toast and jam, cereal and milk. Breakfast is served between 8-10:30 and service is quick. On our 3rd morning at Thai Garden Inn we were leaving to go on a tour before breakfast and asked the night before if we could nip down a bit earlier for a bowl of cereal. We weren't able to go to the restaurant for breakfast but they did make us a pack up the night before and delivered it to our rooms ready for breakfast. It was great and meant we could eat while in the minibus on our way out.
The complex is located in a good spot with easy access to the main attractions such as The Bridge Over The River Kwai.
Upon leaving the Thai Garden In the staff were able to book a minibus back to Bangkok for us which came to pick us up directly and saved us making a trip to the main bus station.
All in all a pleasant and relaxing experience at Thai Garden Inn. The staff speak excellent English and are always up for a little chat while you are waiting for your tuktuk. I would definitely recommend this as a nice place to stay and would love to return.

Wow! Thank you for sharing your experience of staying with us in Tripadvisor. I am glad to see that you have had a good stay.

By the way, next time make sure the local taxi do not charge you more than 120 baht from the bus station to our hotel. And we look forward to seeing you again.

My Wife and family visited Thai Garden Inn for 2 nights during September 2012.
Welcome was very friendly and professional, we were given information regarding local facilities, transport and the local attractions. We were shown to our cottages and were very impressed, they were well prepared, very clean, good bedding, towels, soaps, mini bar, safe for valuables, good AC and spacious. Outside there was a small balcony with table and 2 chairs, great for the evening. Gardens were well kept, specious and interesting. Area was quite and very relaxing, even in the evening. Breakfast was included, which was adequate, however it could be upgraded at a small cost, one bit of feedback to John / Judy please upgrade the size of the individual jam / marmalade sachet, us Brits need 2 just to cover 1 slice of toast! Service was excellent. We had an evening meal and a couple of lunches, food was excellent, good choice, great service and value for money. Bar prices were good value. John and Judy were on hand to offer advice, help, great couple, John even gave us a lift to the station when we left, thanks John. I certainly would recommend the Thai Garden Inn, we will visit again on our next travels.

Room Tip: All rooms / cottages are well located, all the same size, Sun in the evening or morning, just ask Jo...

Thank you for your review. As for the jam, no worries, Makro has started to stock up again, so we are also using a little individual pack for the jam. We started using the individual package last year but when the major floods came in, we could not get any supply until recently. And thanks for reminding us on that as well.

We certainly look forward to seeing you again and hopefully we can share our discussions on Penang (incidentally, Penang is my hometown).

We stayed 3 nights. John and Judy were amazing, John came personally to pick us up when we got stranded looking for a hotel on a rainy evening. They were always forthcoming with advice about what to do etc.
We had 2 rooms at a very good rate (low season + pool being renovated).
The rooms were pleasant, the grounds private and quiet. The snooker table a definite plus with two teenagers! Rate included breakfast, also a plus, although it got a bit tedious after 3 days. Fresh fruit would have been appreciated as part of the meal.
Mattresses are hard, but we have learned that this is to be expected in Thailand. We recommend bringing a thin foldable foam mattress like the ones you would use on a garden bench - place it under your sheet and it makes all the difference!

Initially we were a bit disappointed not to have a view of the river, but soon learned that the karaoke boats on the river can ruin any thought of tranquility that photos lull you into.
John and Judy - thanks for everything. Just one tip - it would be nice if you could have available full-sized bottles of drinking water at non-profit rates, this is really a basic necessity instead of selling only small bottles at 20B each.

We rented bicycles from the inn and rode around the countryside, it was great!
Test the bikes before you get started - in some of them the brakes needed tuning.

The inn is walking distance from the town's main tourist road where you can go for a bite if you don't feel like eating at the excellent inhouse restaurant (turn left at the bridge away from the more obviously touristy direction and after a while across the road is a large "eat-all-you-can" for 100 Baht, where you grill your own meat at your table, great experience.)
As in most places we have been, the best experiences are when you get up at 6am and go out to see the local morning activities - market, Buddhist monks etc. We stumbled across the Chinese compound with all the kids coming to school which was fascinating.

Thank you for review and kind comments. We are happy to hear that you and your family have enjoyed staying with us. By the way, I hope you were aware that 2 bottles of water was provided for free daily in each standard bungalow.

And thanks for the head up on the bikes. We really need to check them more often, especially after a guest returns it. We normally take it that there is no problem when it is returned.

We stayed in a family bungalow in July 2012. The room was very spacious and almost new. The hotel is very peaceful with a great swimming pool. Judy was a fantastic host and nothing was too much trouble for her even when we repeatedly locked ourselves out of our room due to our son's absent-mindedness. We had some great meals here and according to my children they make the best hot chips ever!!

We organised all our transport both in and out of Kanchanaburi and also tours through Thai Garden Inn and it was all handled with great efficiency. It was a pleasant stroll to many restaurants but only a 40 baht tuk-tuk ride if the heat got too much. Thanks Judy for a wonderful stay. We will be back again someday.

Room Tip: The family bungalows are right next to the swimming pool.
