Anantasila Villa by the Sea, Hua Hin
Ranked #5 of 142 Hotels in Hua Hin
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed March 9, 2013

We have just spent 10 nights at Anantasila and we absolutely loved it! The location is great, right on the beach which is quieter and nicer, we thought, than the main beach in Hua Hin. There is no shortage of sunbeds. The hotel is out of Hua Hin (about 7 kms I think) but this was not an issue as the hotel run a shuttle into town twice a day and the 'bus station' is only a 10 minute walk away (or 5 minutes in the hotel rickshaw). A tuk tuk from Hua Hin back to the hotel costs 200 baht.
We stayed in the garden annex, which is slightly set back from the main building, but the room was fine with a lovely outside seating area.
The hotel staff are fantastic without exception, very friendly and helpful. One morning we discovered that the a/c unit in our room was leaking, literally within 2 minutes of notifying the reception staff there was an engineer at the room to fix it.
The breakfast buffet was very good with plenty of choice, we ate at the restaurant several times and the food was always good. There is a 10% service charge included in the bill and we hope this is passed on to the staff. On our last morning we had to leave at 5.30am to catch a train, we were handed a bag of sandwiches, fruit and drinks for the journey, which was a really nice touch and unexpected.
We would defenitely recommend Anantasila and are already planning a return trip as soon as we can arrange it.

I thought I had booked a 5 star, that was very obviously my mistake for not paying more attention, I think I was momentarily bedazzled by the beautiful website and great reviews on trip advisor.

The villa we booked had lovely photos and usually costs around $620 a night during peak season so our expectations were high. Especially considering we recently had a very positive stay at a 4 star golf resort in Hua Hin for a much lower price.

Anantasila was a bit of a let down. There were quite a few people staying with pets and reception is an informal open area near the beach. The female staff member who helped us with our bags was not at all friendly.

When we checked in we were told that because we had children we had to sign a waiver saying we would not hold the hotel responsible if something happened to our children in the villa pool. This is fair, however we thought it was quite underhanded that it is not mentioned at the time of booking confirmation and you also have no option to view the room for safety before signing.

The villa itself was okay. We liked that it is situated away from the busy main area, it is a 3 level with a nice courtyard and private pool.

This is not a child friendly Villa. From the stair case, low door handles, no locks at the top of doors, long blind cords in bedrooms and unfenced pool it is a haven of danger to a toddler.

We did not feel safe and secure. The villa is in a dark and easily assessable area with very poor security and a door with only a push lock in the handle.

The glass doors to the unfenced villa pool are a very simple locking mechanism and low enough for very young children to reach and open. We had to barricade all exits with furniture so our two year old would not escape and drown or run out into a car park.

There was nothing warm and inviting about the villa itself, the furnishings are nice and compliment the style but it was also a bit cold and stark. There is ample tea and coffee supplies but lack of a customary bowl of exotic fruit as many Thai establishments have.

There is no mini bar and no plug-ins or spray to deal with the Mosquitos in the villa.

The doors, coffee table, wall and some linens were marked. The hangers in the robes need replacing as they are very old and some fell apart.

There is a good selection of TV Stations but the televisions are very dated with poor picture and a remote that didn't work.

The bathrooms were lovely with the main having a large shower head and great water pressure however the water constantly changed from very hot to cold without warning.

The traditional parasols at the villa entrance were a nice touch.

On our first night there was a loud rumbling sound from within the walls and the power went out. We could not locate any emergency torches that appear to be standard in most Thai hotels and had to wait in the dark for staff to come and fix the issue.

Most of the family did not sleep, in the upstairs bedroom there was a constant scratching from within the walls and in the lower bedroom the air conditioner made a loud intermittent screeching sound.

The beach was not overly pleasant and there are signs to be careful of jellyfish but no mention of how dangerous the jelly fish stings could be. The hotel pool is significantly smaller than the photos online suggest). We assumed both area were private to hotel patrons, however they are open to the public for a fee.

There were quite a few hawkers on the beach.

Breakfast had quite a good variety (although surprisingly there was little option for those who eat Asian Food). We arrived at opening however the food was not hot, it appeared that a lot of it is left over and re-heated, we would suggest bypassing croissants, they were very old. There was no option for low fat milk, the coffee was quite dreadful.

Room service had a very limited menu that was expensive. The food standard was better than we anticipated though and it did not take as long as we were informed.

The cocktails are expensive, more even than a neighboring award winning restaurant. There is an excessively high corkage fee.

There is no Spa, just bulk massage tables set up close together on the beach.

The Internet is fast and free.

We have previously stayed in some lovely 4 star establishments but this was not one of them. We were so disappointed that we tried to find somewhere else
to stay and considered driving home to Bangkok and write this off as an expensive mistake however we had golf booked over the long weekend and felt compelled to stay.

Anantasila, though relatively attractive in some parts is basically an average hotel on an average beach. It isn't dreadful but it isn't wonderful either. The staff are not overly hospitable and friendly. It doesn't have a luxurious atmosphere but its a suitable place to stay if you like to travel with your pets, be close to the ocean and are happy to pay over inflated prices for that privilege.

The beds are very comfortable, the urn instead of a kettle is great, the dinner setting and tea cups provided were lovely and the little kitchen area is handy.

Anantasila, General Manager at Anantasila Villa by the Sea, Hua Hin, responded to this reviewResponded February 28, 2013

Dear MSDL,

My team and I were distressed that you found your recent weekend with us not up to your expectations. We were especially saddened to hear your judgment that we are not child friendly. We consider ourselves a family hotel and have expended considerable resources to ensure we remain a safe and fun place for kids. We have recently extended the kiddies area of our 25 meter swimming pool, have a mini-golf course that has been quite popular with our younger guests. We also offer a safe swimming area on our beach.

Similarly, we were saddened to hear you considered us to be “quite underhanded” regarding the request for a child waiver. When you booked with Booking.com, the room description clearly stated “ Children under 12 years old are not allowed in the Villas.” We have had a longstanding policy of not renting any of our four pool villas to families with young children precisely because of the many safety reasons you cited. We also wish to reserve this area for adult guests seeking a more private and tranquil setting. In some cases, families with well-behaved younger kids who were good swimmers would want us to override this policy. Thus, the waiver was born. As a courtesy, we offered to give you such a waiver since the hotel was full and alternate accommodations were unavailable. It seems unfair to criticize us for not making the Villas toddler proof when we designed them and advertise them as specifically for adults. As for your assertion that you were not permitted to view the villa before signing the waiver, I can only assume this was the result of a communication problem. If requested, we routinely allow perspective guests to inspect our rooms before booking is finalized.

Re security, the pool villas are surrounded by a two meter wall and a 24 hour radio equipped uniformed guard is posted 25 meters away. A second guard is stationed at the main entrance and both do computer-monitored foot patrols throughout the night. The grounds are also covered by CCTV cameras. There have been no security incidents involving the Pool Villas since they were constructed over five years ago.

We make no claim to be a Five Star hotel but do aspire to give our guests value for their money. The weekend you spent with us was an important three-day national holiday and, like many Hua Hin hotels, we were fully booked. You paid approximately $350 per night including breakfast for a group of six for a fully equipped 3 level Villa with a private pool. We are truly sorry you found this rate overinflated.

Regarding pets we do allow them in certain areas of the hotel but we do not permit more than five on any given day. The only persons permitted to use the swimming pool or beach sunbeds are patrons of either the restaurant or of the hotel. We do not advertise as having a Spa but several independent massage stations are permitted by the City administration to operate on the beach. Sorry for the mini blackout but the power loss was citywide and based on the excessive demand caused by the high number of holiday visitors. Thanks to your suggestions, all pool villas will now have emergency lighting.

We appreciate the time you took to write your review and hope this note clears up some misconceptions. Should you consider giving us another chance, I am sure we can find you accommodations better suited to your family needs.

Best regards, Bruce Khalili, General Manager, Anantasila Villa.

After booking 2 double garden/bungalow rooms through the hotels website ,we were extremely
disappointed to find one was on the car park and the 2nd had no patio or window.
We complained on arrival ,The reception staff were very helpful, but it meant we had to pay
approx.£800 extra for upgraded rooms and had to move a couple of times during our stay.
The rooms we moved to in the main part of the hotel were very nice, which they should have been for the extra cost.
We felt the garden/bungalow room description was very misleading as these rooms did not
come up to the standard of the main part of the hotel and reminded us of a budget US motel
room where you would not want to stay more than 1 night and certainly not for a 2 week holiday.
These rooms let the hotel down which was a shame as the staff, restaurant, reception area and beach were all very good.

My wife and I stayed here for five days in January. The location of the hotel is very good - at the quiet end of Hua Hin with wonderful access to the beach. All of the staff were friendly and helpful, the breakfast and restaurant meals were good and the rooms were clean and well turned out.

We booked at the last minute (the day before) and the hotel only had availability in a seperate building, which is just over the road and has about 10 other rooms. The rooms were fine, but the few wasn't so good - if you can, try to get a room in the main building.

There is a great pool, which doesn't get too busy and the beach is right at the front of the hotel. On a Friday and Saturday night there is a female singer / guitarist who sings at the restaurant - she is superb.

Room Tip: Pick a room in the main building, on a high floor, overlooking the sea.

Booked after reading the reviews on Trip Advisor which led us to Booking.com. Fine print from Booking.com said that room was in a Annex. On arrival, room given was C203. Turned out to face a car park. Maybe that's what the 'C' stood for - Carpark.

The front desk wanted to upgrade that room to one that was facing the pool, but it turned out that the room has a foul smell from the air-conditioning. Turned down the 'upgrade' and moved into C203. At least the air-conditioning in this room was fine.

Positives:
Bed was great, TV worked well, and so did wifi throughout the property. The lady that cleaned the Carpark Annex did a fantastic job every day. She was a star! Beach front location and proximity to Monkey Mountain was great. Even though far from Hua Hin town (about 8kms), the hotel provides a free shuttle service twice a day (11am and 5pm).

Negatives:
Bathroom in C203 was tiny. You can barely close the door if you stood inside. Reminded me of a Japanese type bathroom. Shower door did not close properly and water leaked out during every shower.

Breakfast was similar nearly every day. Not much of a Thai option even though we are in Thailand. Mostly sausages, fried vegetables, eggs done any way, fresh cut fruit, toast and porridge. Perhaps it was meant to cater to the Caucasian guests.

The unofficial reservation system for booking the deck chairs by the beach is odd. The same male staff daily puts towels on deck chairs and when you go and sit on one, he says that it's been reserved even though there is no one sitting there yet. Not sure how that works as I did not read about it in the hotel guidebook.

Shuttle service to town should be more frequent, maybe 4 times a day.

Conclusion:
For the price I paid, the room wasn't worth the money. I may return if I had my own transport and got a better room for the same price but would probably try another hotel more centrally located.

Room Tip: Don't book an Annex room.

We (family with toddler) just spent a few days at Anantasila and had a great time. The food was amazing! It was right on the beach, which was beautiful and the grounds were very nicely done. I had great Thai massages right on the beach. The pool was nice and the service was good. We had a lovely time. We rented a suite so we could be up while the baby was asleep. The suite was across the street from the main part of the hotel, which we did not realize in advance. It was clean and well-appointed and fine, but nothing to write home about. Of course you don't go for the room!

I was gifted to stay at 'Anantasila' for over 1 month in mid 2012. I assisted the staff with their english. I found all who work or associated with Anantasila just wonderful. The service from Reception, Restaurant, Housekeeping, Security, Porters & Gardening (hope I didn't leave anyone out) were all perfect. The renovations of the grounds and pool took place while I was there with little inconvience to guests, and now finished look amazing. My many thanks to Madam, family & staff for all their help, smiles and hugs (I miss you all) you all make this place just beautiful. I will return this year to see you all. Thank you once again.
My love to all - Barbara (Australia)
