The most beautiful, tasteful, wonder of a hotel! I stay there as often as possible! Beautiful gardens right on the beach, three separate pools, and an extremely friendly staff. French colonial style. Don't miss the Club offer when checking in. Money well spent!

This hotel was fantastic value. A beautiful "raffles" style of architecture and furnishings. Service and food are fantastic and great value. The extra touches such as the cakes delivered to the room every afternoon, free bottled water and free wifi for Centara 1 members all made the holiday quite effortless and luxurious. A choice of pools with one which always seemed to be kid free (though there were no rules). The hotel is so close to the night markets and great local restaurants. All were walking distance away, though some nights when laden with shopping we opted for the very easy to locate tuk tuks. Wouldn't stay anywhere else when in Hua Hin.

Room Tip: Choose an upper level room, some friends heard some noises from moving of furniture above. Upper le...

On a previous trip to Hua Hin we were attracted to this hotel by its location and beautiful gardens and decided to give it a try. We arrived from Bangkok by train which we found an interesting and pleasant journey. Our booking was in one of the villas and we were checked in very efficiently. The villas are quite expensive but we think the extra is worth the privacy and quiet. The bed was very comfortable and the bed linen beautiful. Every night we had undisturbed sleep. Luckily it was low season so the only noise was from the songbirds in the natural surroundings ... and that was beautiful. The service to the villas was excellent, every request we made was dealt with immediately. Having a private pool was a delight and we enjoyed many hours in it. Generally the food was very good in the restaurants. Breakfast at the Salathai was exceptional in service.
All in all we had a great holiday there and will certainly return.
Don't expect too much from the town of Hua Hin, that is why it is important to have good accomodation.
Perhaps the management could make more effort to put some flowering plants around the villa pool area which is quite white and austere.

Reviewing: The Centara, the beach and Hua Hin town.

If you find this review helpful, please give it a tick - took quite a while to write and upload pix for your reading pleasure :)

The Hotel:
We stayed here in September 2013 after reading all the reviews. September is low season and the hotel and town were quiet, which was very nice. For comparison we visited the Hilton while we were there, and cannot tell you how glad we were NOT to have stayed at the Hilton - it looked like tourist purgatory.

The Centara complex is built in 2 halves, one side being the villas with its own pool, library and restaurant Salathai, and the other side being the 3 storey hotel with spa centre, 2 pools, library, 3 or 4 restaurants, bar, etc. Both complexes face the beach and are set in vast gardens. Check out my photo of the hotel complex map for more info.

We stayed in a Villa with spa and pool - all villas have a "spa" (outdoor bathtub, no bubbles), and some have their own small pool which we paid $60 per day more for. On reflection, this was not money well spent as the main villa pool is close and very nice.

We may have felt differently if our pool had been as nice as some of the other villas we saw, whose pools were on the decks outside the bedrooms and looked quite inviting. Ours was below ground level at the side/back of the villa and seemed to be an add-on after the villa was built, as an afterthought - not a good looking pool, and the area around it was scruffy and not well maintained which put us off a bit. I do believe it was their least attractive villa after looking at the others. Villa 503 in case you are wondering - stay in any villa but that one.

Having said that, all villas seemed to look the same on the inside which is where we spent more time and it was very nice, just like the pictures, like a pristine white beach house.

The beds were too hard for my liking as the mattress was set on a hard wooden base vs a sprung base, but my husband really liked it.

The rooms are well equipped with everything you could need including turn down service which included change of towels, general tidy up and replacement of stuff, sweet treats, etc and were very clean which is one of my big tick areas in a hotel.

For those staying in the villas, and maybe for others as well (not sure on eligibility), one of the restaurants called the Club is open all day for free drinks and light snacks. Set on a verandah overlooking the gardens, it's a nice rest area and everything except alcohol is free.

There are 3 places for breakfast: the Salathai (restaurant exclusively for the villa people by the villa pool - a cut down version of the larger breakfast at the Railway Restaurant), the Club (same breakfast and exclusivity as the Salathai), then there's the Railway which is much larger and has more variety for breakfast and is open to everyone.

We breakfasted at the Railway due to larger variety of food than the other 2 restaurants, however having said that, the asian meals were the same each day, no variety there at all which was disappointing. If you've ever had a buffet breakfast in an asian hotel, you'll know what to expect - it all looked and tasted great.

Can't think of anything Centara could do better except improve Villa 503 pool area and maybe revisit their pricing - it was a bit overpriced for what we got in return in my view.

Check out my photo of the hotel complex map to choose a villa NOT too close to the beach otherwise you'll hear music from the beach sellers all day.

The beach:

All that we read about the beach was true: it is not a beach you'd sunbathe on - the water is muddy brown, will never be blue and is not fit for swimming in. The hotel management advise against swimming due to currents, sharp rocks etc which was very good advice as far as we could see. It's good to walk on though, and you can walk for miles up or down on soft white sand.

The town:
There's no getting away from it - there is nothing to do in Hua Hin once you have visited the night market, the local morning veg / wet market and the mall called Market Village. Nothing. We refused to visit the Swiss Sheep Farm and the Greek theme park, that would have been too sad.

Which forced us to relax for the week we were there, and do nothing but swim, eat, walk around, read, get pedicured and massaged, and rest. Sounds great and was great, but after a week I was really pleased to be coming home as our idea of a good holiday is one that combines all the above with some good shopping and sightseeing - there is no shopping to be done in Hua Hin; I really struggled to spend any money which is never a struggle for me.

Hua Hin is apparently a town where many northern European men retire to, so there are German, Swedish and Swiss restaurants around.

For those inclined, there are PLENTY of bars along the waterfront with wiling girls, ladyboys. loud music, monkey business, etc, all par for the course in Thailand, but none of which made us feel uncomfortable or nervous, it all seemed fairly harmless and low key. It was very clean and friendly, even in the bar areas.

Restaurants are another story - read the restaurant reviews page for ideas.

Summary: glad we went, glad we experienced Centara. If we'd stayed anywhere else I'd have cut my losses and left early.

Room Tip: See my map of the hotel complex. Avoid Villa 503 or any villa right ON the beach as music from the b...

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villas Hua Hin first opened its doors in the early 1920s at a time when Hua Hin was still a sleepy coastal village. This five-star beachfront resort was built along the classic lines of that era, with phenomenal gardens and beautifully spacious rooms and suites (up to 170 square metres) with high ceilings, polished hardwood flooring, period furniture, and the warm tones of Thai silk. The resort is also home to 42 single-storey villas that offer privacy and space (up to 120 square metres) and the choice of a Jacuzzi or plunge pool on the terrace. Beside Hua Hin’s gorgeous beach, a stone’s throw away, and a relaxed atmosphere to enjoy to the full, the resort also offers plenty of leisure options for adults and children: four swimming pools and children’s pools, a superb spa, a fitness centre, tennis courts, Muay Thai and Tai Chi classes, and two kids clubs. Plus, the town is outside our door, and some of the best golf courses in Thailand are within easy travelling distance. The dining venues include a colonial style café and all-day dining restaurant, a Japanese restaurant, a Thai restaurant located near the villas, and the modern COAST Beach Club & Bistro. With its setting on the beach and its elegant atmosphere, the resort also is the perfect setting for a dream wedding. ... more   less
