In July 1992 50 expats from around the region descended on the Sofitel Central Railway Hotel and on Saturday 18th July the hotel helped organise and run our wedding day. Now 20 years later we are back at the Centra Grand Beach Resort and the same willingness to help and please is still evident across all the staff and management. So much so that from pictures and invitations the staff were able to recreate our wedding banquet on the terrace of the Railway Restuarant - we even managed to book the same suite although the kids filled the adjoining room this time around rather than the brides maids from 20 years ago..!
This hotel is still magnificent and truly deserving of it recent elevation to a Leading Hotel of the World, the staff are genuine and helpful, they are proud of their hotel (and their town) and consequently the hotel works, the grounds are beautiful, the rooms clean and comfortable, the restaurants are first class and you feel at immediately at home - no two or three day's relaxing, you just walk through the door and leave it all behind.
We were concerned that our three teenage boys would not enjoy the hotel as much as us but they loved the place and wanted to stay longer. I think it was the buffet breakfast that had a range of food to satisfy any diet and taste.
The location of the hotel allows you easy walking access to the town and although time/progress has taken it's toll (Starbucks and McDonalds) there are still small restaurants to explore, markets to visit and little bars to stop for a beer.
There are many golf course within striking distance but I still get a kick from jumping in a tuk tuk, crossing the railway line and playing Royal Hua HIn, Thailands oldest golf course - my caddy this year claimed she remembered me from 20 years ago.
Upgrade to the "Club" for afternoon tea and pre dinner drinks to really spoil yourself.
Four swimming pools, outdoor chess, a boules' court, putting green and gym are enough to keep everyone happy - happy hour at the pool is worth a visit, either in the pool or sitting looking out over the ocean.
A brilliant hotel and a wonderful break - we will be back for our 25th anniversary if not next year.
