Stay: May 14th to May 28th.

We have had a perfect stay in this hotel from day one. The overall impression of this hotel is great. Being built in the 1920’s this hotel truly has an “Old world” charm, this made our stay all the more pleasant. The gardens surrounding the hotel are beautiful and very well kept (for example the nicely trimmed hedges in all sorts of animal forms). The staff in this hotel is, without exception very friendly, attentive and helpful. In our opinion everything ran smoothly.

Room:

We’ve stayed in a premium deluxe pool villa. The rooms were all very spacious and clean. The bathroom was fitted with a big bathtub and a separate shower cabin. The villa has a separate living room, which also is very spacious and a nice place to relax after having a swim or for seeking refuge during short torrential rain showers. The private pool and sala were great. It was the perfect place to relax. In fact there is no need to leave your villa (that would be a shame though). Some nice touches were the daily turndown service with some sweets and fresh flowers several times during our stay. Small things, but they made you feel at home.
The Villa’s a separate from the main hotel. They are situated in a gardenlike environment with a pool, a bar, a lobby, a library and a restaurant where you can also have breakfast.

The Club:

The club program was included with our room. It is a sort of upgrade that gives you some extra´s. Some of the extra´s are free WIFI in your room and in the club, a daily afternoon tea, cocktails and canapés at the club. A late checkout until 4 p.m. (subject to room availability). Take the upgrade to club level, it makes your stay in the hotel all the more pleasant. You can have breakfast at the club. You can choose from a à la carte menu and/or from the buffet. We have enjoyed breakfast at the club. It is a nice start of the day in a quiet setting with some nice views of the garden. The staff was very attentive and friendly. A special mention for cheery Sucheera who made breakfast at the club all the more enjoyable!

Restaurants:

The hotel has several restaurants but we have only been to the Thai restaurant Salathai. Dining in the hotel is more expensive than in town of course but to European standards it is reasonably priced. The food is excellent though. The outdoor seating on a whole is nice. If you’re having lunch it isn’t have bad to have a table near the pool. But during the evening it would be nice if the tables at the poolside could be made a bit cozier by putting some plants between the tables and the pool (for example).

Tour Desk:

The hotel uses World Travel Service for their tours. We’ve booked all our tours at the tour desk. Prices were acceptable for private tours. Tour agencies in town are cheaper but the prices that are advertised are not for private tours. The choice is yours. We were very pleased with the service given by World Travel Service. The guide (her name was Nut) was terrific, if you get the chance book Nut. Her English was quite good and she engages you in a pleasant conversation during the ride without being pushy. The information given at sites is good and she gives you enough free time to explore the sites for yourself.

The Cenvaree Spa:

During our stay we’ve had a spa treatment. The spa facilities are good, and the staff gives a good explanation of the steps during the treatment. Thumbs up for spa manager Kathy and her able crew.

Children:

The hotel is child friendly. It has a Children’s Playroom & Playground. Parents however should keep in mind that they are also parents during their holiday. Keep your children in check please and see to it that other guests aren’t bothered too much. Also small children shouldn’t be allowed to enter the buffet area unsupervised. Parents should see to that, it’s their responsibility. The hotel staff should also keep an eye on things and, if necessary confront the children and parents.

Location:

The hotel is in the city center. You are just a few minutes' walk away from restaurants, bars, shops and sites.

We have enjoyed our stay very much and certainly recommend this hotel to everyone!

Room Tip: We've stayed in poolvilla 420. Ideally situated and enough privacy.

Recently stayed here with my wife and two small children ,firstly the hotel is stunning and the service is wonderful. The only issue I had was the way that some quests treated both my children and the staff in the club lounge.
My son who as autism was astually told by another quest to "Shut up and Get out of the lounge" absolutely shameful .
Too bad that you can buy upgrades but really you cannot buy class.

We have stayed at this hotel (formerly Sofitel) approximately 15 times, spending 2 weeks at a time. We loved it, that's why we kept going back. Gradually over the years the little touches have disappeared, which is a shame but nothing drastic enough to stop us going again. The Club concept in theory, is great (though expensive)! But the service this year was far below what you would expect in a 5* hotel. It was very inconsistent, one day they would address you by name and be very attentive, other days you and your empty glass were ignored whilst they had a chat amongst themselves. We cannot complain about the food in the Club lounge, it was very good. We actually spoke to the Club lounge manageress and voiced our concerns about the inconsistent service and she seemed aware of it. However, nothing changed. The other thing we did not like about the Club lounge was the fact that children were allowed to run around, make a noise and help themselves to food without adult supervision. The last thing you want when you are trying to enjoy evening cocktails is noisy children. (Obviously the parents are at fault but you know what I mean!!).

The whole atmosphere of the hotel has changed over the years, and not in a good way. We used to enjoy the returning guests cocktail party, but this year we gave it a miss. If the majority of the management cannot be bothered to acknowledge you around the hotel, what is the point of going to the cocktail party knowing that the same management will be treating you like old friends - for just an hour!!

We cannot complain about our room. It was excellent, spotless and thankfully quiet. Our maid was one we have had many times, and she is wonderful. The one consistent thing after all these years.

I agree with an earlier review which stated that loyalty should be recognized - and it used to be. But not any more, sadly.

We have come to the sad decision that we will not be returning to the hotel. There are plenty more places to try.

Dear Sir / Madame,

Thank you for taking the time to leave your review of Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villas Hua Hin on TripAdvisor. Your feedback is very valuable and appreciated.

We are sad to read that we seem to have been unable to make you felt welcome and appreciated because this is particularly what we strive for. Obviously this year we did not succeed and would like to first of all present you with our sincerest apologies.

Over the past 3 years, we have considerably improved our facilities by rejuvenating both our Garden and Colonial Wing as well as the hotel lobby, the Elephant Bar and the Railway Restaurant. More recently we have opened a new Health Club and are developing a Kid’s Club.

We are very thankful for the loyalty you have shown our hotel and truly appreciated these 15 visits of yours. We are taking a close look at the Club operations and you can be ensured that we have already taken corrective actions to ensure that we provide attentive service at all times.

We appreciate your sharing your concerns, and it is our hope that you will give us the opportunity to better serve you in the near future, we remain,

Sincerely yours,
The Management

This hotel recently changed owners and it seemed that not everything was running very smoothly. But first the good things: it's very centrally located in Hua Hin, right next to the main area for restaurants, bars and night clubs. Despite the central location, it's very quiet at night (except for all kinds of animal sounds) due to the gigantic size of the grounds.

The size of the rooms is comfortable and the bathroom is spacious. There are several pools and a direct access to the ocean. There is a decent gym where you can also borrow headphones if you forgot them, like me.

The breakfast is just amazing! There is a huge selection of fruits, juices, bread, pastries and all egg dishes are prepared to order in front of you. But there's also caveats: the breakfast isn't included in the price and is quite expensive. Same goes for wifi! But you can get breakfast and wifi, plus additional food and drinks service in a "Club" package, where you end up paying less than if you bought breakfast and wifi separately, but it significantly raises the price of your stay.

These hidden costs explain the relatively good prices for the luxury this hotel offers. But beware, the breakfast ends 10am sharp, which means there is nothing left to eat and drink at 10:05! And they try to get you out as soon as possible after service has finished. And same goes for checkout: the Club package gets you late checkout until 4pm, but we said we would leave around 3pm. On the last day we had 3 phone calls and 2 people knocking on the door in the few minutes after 3pm, telling us to leave, because new guests are waiting.

These two service problems put a black mark on otherwise very friendly and professional service at the whole resort. We were 3 friends who came for kiting, but this hotel is much better if you're there on a romantic holiday with your spouse.

I am a Sofitel Platinum member and have stayed at this hotel for over 10 years. However, over the last three years the standards have fallen which is a great shame. The management are both arrogant and the prices very overpriced. They have forgotten the most basic of customer care principles: treat customers as individuals and not rich international farangs; understand that customers have choices in life and there are competitors that are far superior locally and finally recognise loyalty without having to remind and ask for privileges which should be automatic.
The lounge staff need retraining as they are both slow, rude and expect tips. Customers who are paying for executive level comforts should be treated accordingly.

Seriously consider your stay at this hotel to avoid being ripped off and disappointed.

We stayed in the villas which are separate from the main hotel and the WIFI was complementary and part of our package deal. The villa was lovely and having our own private pool was a luxury. If you can afford it my suggestion would be to pay for the 'Club Membership', we loved the 'High Tea' and 'Cocktails' every day. The staff at the villas were fantastic and couldnt do enough for us, they went out of their way to be helpful.
The only negative comment I have is in regards to the beach. As it is a public beach and has what looks like a ''tent city' just outside the entrance to the villas, a difinate no,no for us. There are also no deck chairs or sun lounges on the beach, so if you want to spend time on the beach you will have to lie on the sand or hire a deck chair.
I loved the location of the hotel in relation to the shops and local restaurants. You have to eat at 'Na Na Place', for an authentic Thai experience.
With all of the negative comments about the beach I will still return for another visit as the staff and accommodation were first class.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villas Hua Hin first opened its doors in the early 1920s at a time when Hua Hin was still a sleepy coastal village. This five-star beachfront resort was built along the classic lines of that era, with phenomenal gardens and beautifully spacious rooms and suites (up to 170 square metres) with high ceilings, polished hardwood flooring, period furniture, and the warm tones of Thai silk. The resort is also home to 42 single-storey villas that offer privacy and space (up to 120 square metres) and the choice of a Jacuzzi or plunge pool on the terrace. Beside Hua Hin’s gorgeous beach, a stone’s throw away, and a relaxed atmosphere to enjoy to the full, the resort also offers plenty of leisure options for adults and children: four swimming pools and children’s pools, a superb spa, a fitness centre, tennis courts, Muay Thai and Tai Chi classes, and two kids clubs. Plus, the town is outside our door, and some of the best golf courses in Thailand are within easy travelling distance. The dining venues include a colonial style café and all-day dining restaurant, a Japanese restaurant, a Thai restaurant located near the villas, and the modern COAST Beach Club & Bistro. With its setting on the beach and its elegant atmosphere, the resort also is the perfect setting for a dream wedding. ... more   less
