Attraction details
Owner description: Hutsadin Elephant Foundation offers the visitor a variety of attractions. At present we have 4 elephants available for trekking or for our latest option of bareback riding. Each trek or ride will take you through the surrounding areas. After your trek you will be able to watch a small show by our youngest elephant, or if you would prefer you are welcome to wash her instead and there will be plenty of opportunities for some amazing photos. After this you may want to visit our retired elephants. If you prefer a more hands approach, you may want to try our 'mahout experience' where you will get a talk about the foundation and its ethos plus the individual stories of all our elephants and why they were rescued, you will also help to take care of our retired elephants for the morning(9.00a.m - 12.00), in this time you will get to prepare food, give medication, clean their shelters, take one for a walk and then give her a wash. Will receive a t shirt to remember your time with us and you are welcome to have a free vegetarian lunch and ice cream to finish your morning. (please e mail for details as only available on certain days and only small groups are taken). If you can't spare three hours but still want something 'hands on' you can take one of elephants for a walk and then wash then on return - approximately 1/2 hour. If you just want to have a look around the foundation and chat to some of the English speaking volunteers you are more than welcome and there is no charge, however they are only there on a Monday, Wednesday or Friday morning. All of our elephants have been rescued and all have their own story, there is an information board near the seating area where you can learn more about each individual elephant.A final word to clarify the situation :- you may be asked for a tip or to buy trinkets from the mahouts - this is entirely up to you and is not supported by the foundation. Any money that you give to the mahouts DOES NOT go into the foundation funds and is not used to buy food etc (no matter what you may be told). Should you wish to make a donation please put it into the box in the front office or give to one of the volunteers. As a warning, some taxi/tuk tuk drivers will try to take you to other elephant attractions - to ensure that you come to Hutsadin phone the number at the top of the page we can provide a taxi that will bring you here. If you are making your own way, our staff all wear white clothing, volunteers wear Hutsadin t shirts. We are located at the very top of the hill (coming from town) on the right hand side, go past the signs and turning for Elephant Village We hope that you enjoy your visit and find it a memorable experience. Please post your comments on tripadvisor for the benefit of others.

“Mahout Experience”
Reviewed June 2, 2014

My husband and i took part in the Mahout experience in May 2014. We thought it was fantastic - we learnt all about each individual elephant and where they had come from etc. Also learnt about the foundation and what goes into the day to day running of the place. We fed them, went for a walk and finally washed one of them. It was a great experience and i would recommend this to anybody travelling to the area. Lunch was an added bonus as well and really nice!

The mahout experience is really popular and everyone who has taken part seems to enjoy that up close and personal experience. :)

“Amazing”
Reviewed June 1, 2014 via mobile

We have just come back from a morning at Hutsadin where we did the mahout experience. It was brilliant. We had both been to Thailand before and ridden elephants but found this much more educational and felt a real sense of supporting the elephants. Alan, thr British volunteer was outstanding, answering all questions and making sure we had a great morning. Thank you

“Worth it ”
Reviewed May 27, 2014 via mobile

Really great experience, unlike almost every other animal experience in Thailand, you can leave here without feeling guilty, these elephants are well cared for. Great experience and having an English volunteer there to chat to us made it even better. Mahouts will try and get money out of you all the time and sell you bracelets etc but if you're prepared for that then that's fine. Didn't do the mahout experience and really regret it, looked 100x better than riding the elephants. Make sure you book in advance because they will organise a good value return taxi for you about 400 baht from Central huahin. Thanks for an enjoyable morning!

Thank you for your review - volunteers are pretty much there to ensure that those who don't want to do the more commercial activities can still get a great experience with the elephants. As volunteers we are able to spend our time with you without you paying a baht and I can assure you we will never try to sell you jewellery or ask for a tip :)

We are so pleased that you enjoyed your time here at the foundation. For those people who don't want a trek or to see a show, or who haven't been quick enough to book the mahout experience, you are always welcome to just come in and meet our elephants - there is no charge for this, although it is usually best for non Thai speakers to come in on a Monday, Wednesday or Friday morning when English speaking volunteers will gladly give you their time and knowledge of our elephants - the retired ones in particular :)

“what a brill place to go”
Reviewed May 26, 2014

me and my wife where lucky to be able to do the mahout experience it was one of the best things we have done in Thailand. We learned about each elephant in the care of the foundation to hear how they where brought to the foundation and the amount of care a medication they required. .Unlike the other elephant attractions in the area these elephant where not here for your entertainment but you education. We fell in love with the elephant's we meet but one just wins hands down.my wife who is apprehensive at the best of time total fell for a female whose name I now cant remember. but had a bad eye infection by the end of the experience she had to give her a hug to say good by she has not stopped looking at the pictures we had taken.i would just like to say a big THANK YOU to Jo and her Husband for every thing on the day and also to all the other volunteers. we will be back

Thank you for your lovely review - all the volunteers are so proud of the mahout experience and how much everyone who takes part in it enjoys it. It really gives us such a personal kick when people come in and are so nervous to be that close to an elephant but by the end of the experience are hugging them!
Tong Kam is an exceptional elephant and through her people are learning so much about our work here - of course the vast amount of fruit helps!
Her eye infection is almost totally clear now thanks to the eye wash and cream 5 times a day (in itself no easy task!).
We really hope you come back again one day :)
