“Disappointed and Saddened”
Reviewed March 15, 2014

Went to visit the Elephant Village in a group during our stay in Hua Hin. The immediate impression we got was that this is all about the money. From the time you enter the grounds everything is money orientated. We were taken aback at how depressed looking the Elephants were. On the ride around the grounds the Elephants were shaking their heads from side to side this is a sign of extreme stress and depression in animals. They have to keep going around and around the same path day in day out. As soon as one ride Is finished they have to immediately start all over again with different people on their backs. They did not seen to get a chance to rest the guys sitting on their backs directing them along the path had pointed hooks which they constantly prodded the Elephants with. Even when they stopped to go to the toilet the guys prodded them to make them keep moving. We found the whole thing upsetting and cut our tour short. When we encountered a baby elephant tied up in chains and crying the children wanted to go to him / Her to comfort the baby but straight away a guy appeared and demanded money to have his photograph taken with the Baby, we were not allowed to take a photo otherwise. If you love Animals we would say stay away from The Elephant Village it is immoral the way these majestic creatures are confined and treated. It's all about the money the Elephants are only a commodity that make the owners as much money as is possible. Sad Sad Place.

“Riding through built up area”
Reviewed March 14, 2014

Visited in 2012, but forgot to review. It was a reasonable experience, hot and a little uncomfortable, but a worthwhile ride...something ticked off my wish list

“Really not great”
Reviewed March 10, 2014

Whilst I cannot profess to knowing how elephants really ought to be kept, this place really left you thinking that this was not it:
- Two elephants were kept separate from the others, chained up.
- A baby elephant was made to perform tricks with a mouth organ.
- We were shown bracelets to buy made from elephant's teeth (not their tusks, apparently), which seemed particularly grim.

Taken here as part of a tour, so we had no real understanding ahead of time what we were going to. There was nothing we observed that was overtly cruel, it just didn't seem right.

“A treat.”
Reviewed February 7, 2014

We went here mainly to support the place. They take in old elephants that people don't want anymore, so any help is appreciated. The elephants are well looked after and go to the mountain in the evenings to sleep, which I think is lovely. A basket of fruit cost 200bht, and you can have photos taken, and go on an elephant ride if you like.
