First time we stayed here was in Christmas 2011. The hotel was quite new at that time. We got a deluxe room the first time. It was big, modern, and nice. Next time, in October 2012, we stayed in a superior room. We change rooms after a few days because of some renovation that had to be done in our room. None of the rooms we stayed in looked as nice as the first time we stayed in this hotel. They looked old and shabby this time.
The pool is very small and the sun does not reach the pool more than a couple of hours a day. There is a very small poolarea where there are a few sunbeds.
The breakfast is boring.
I think this was the last time we were staying in this hotel.

Booked a deluxe room. The room was neither deluxe nor quiet. Quite frankly, we feel that we were deceived as the hotel had an obligation to advise of the ongoing construction activity.(See picture) It looks like the work will continue for some time.
This hotel is comprised of 2 buildings. Building 1 is the main building and building 2 is the adjacent building which you get to by walking down what we called the corridor of despair. This narrow corridor made it difficult if two people were walking in opposite direction with bags, as one would have to back up to allow the other to pass. This corridor is on the side of the pool. We did not use the pool, but the comments made by others appear accurate (see photos). The 2nd building is adjacent to another structure undergoing renovation/demolition/construction such that the walls started to resonate with pounding at approx 7:30 am when we were there. The large crane was in operation most of the day and was loud. Construction personnel were often shouting and the staff maintenance personnel also picked the area at the far end of the building to have their smoke breaks and chat time. Neither a relaxing nor quiet area to be. The parking area with the noise of the vehicles didn't help matters.
Housekeeping was not that good, as there was literally an inch of dust on the glass shelf that is over the minibar and cabinet area. The breakfast was bland and more often than not cold or so overcooked as to be unpalatable. I don't think that discouraged some of the guests as they looked to be loading their plates up, so I guess some people liked the fare. We thought the first breakfast experience was an off day and tried again the next day, settling for coffee. Unfortunately, the nasty instant coffee was enough for us and we gave the included meal a pass for the remainder of our visit.
This hotel seems to be directed at first time European package tour visitors who have no experience in Thailand. I would be surprised if the hotel attracts many repeat customers as there are much better options available. The location wasn't that bad, but it is somewhat inconvenient to get to the beach and to the major food areas. Yes, it is close to the KFC, and McDonalds, but we prefer to eat the local food and one had to walk a good 15-20 minutes to get away from the hotel to find it. This hotel has so much potential, but it seems that there is no visible management presence.
Reception was not friendly and it was if they were doing us a favour by letting us stay in one of their noisy dirty rooms. I cannot offer anything positive to say about this hotel except to say that the high point was checking out. We would have left earlier but we had prepaid for the room. I won't be coming back.

Room tip: Do not take a room in the building next to the construction on the side. If you really need western food, then take a 100baht tuk tuk ride to the Market Village Shopping complex. The meals are 1/2 the cost as what is in the area. Try the old night market area for some authentic Thai food.

Location.
Located opposite the Sofitel in centre of town, less than 3 minute walk to cross roads of main street and two minutes to beach from there. Bar area's and restaurants are all in close proximity. Even though close to busy town, hotel location is fairly quiet and did not hear any noise at night.
Room
The room (701) is on the top floor, the elevator only goes to 6th floor so one must then walk up stairs to final floor. However there is a benefit to this floor, only one other room on 7th floor and next to 701 there is the roof top terrace (as does not have balcony which other rooms do) which offers good views of the city. I also sunbathed up there but there is only one sun bed that is in adequate condition, but great if you want all day sun without any shade and a quiet spot high up, close to room if you need a drink or anything. No one else came there so felt like my private balcony.
This room was deluxe as stated on key card and quite pricey (£70pn) but did stay over NYE so expected it. The room is large with a large really comfortable bed a couch and good air conditioning. There is a desk area by the TV which although not flat screen worked well and there is a DVD machine which is great because lots of dvd's sellers in the markets. The bathroom had shower/bath combi but was clean with good controls on shower. The amenities were a little tight compared to other places stayed at in thailand but they did include room flip flops which preferred to mine as they were really comfortable. Overall the room was clean but nothing special or luxurious but comfortable and slept well. Main beneift being close access to roof terrace.
Facilities
There is a restaurant next to the pool. The restaurant serves breakfast but not sure about lunch or dinner. Its buffet style and nothing special for Thailand. However no so typical buffet breakfast foods as one day had Chicken Curry and spicy pasta for breakfast which was delicious. They also have an egg station but the cook uses so much oil that was put off.
The pool is also there and looks nice however it was freezing, perhaps because i was at the beach all day but as people have said there is little sun on the pool area due to position between tall buildings, so pool cannot get hot. However it was refreshing and clean.
Staff
Staff mixed really for Thailand, one girl at reception seemed a bit short and sharp but others were nice. They didn't seem to particular go out their way for you at reception.

Overall it was the cheapest decent option with last minute booking but it was better than expected. Definitely a 3rd of the price of the main resorts and so close to everything and beach, yet quiet so was a good location.

Room tip: 7th floor for a quieter option with roof terrace if you dont mind not having a balcony.

Occupied a ground floor room at the far end of the small building adjacent to the car park. This allowed for the daily pleasure of listening to the heavy truck parked outside and the ongoing construction that resulted in our room having a banging and drilling serenade that made the walls vibrate. Sometimes we had a bit of hot water. The pool is small and whoever decided to put deck chairs around what is for all intents and purposes a wishing well, had delusions of grandeur since there is inadequate deck space. This hotel is a a 2-3 star establishment by Thai standards and had I known what a dump this place was, I would never have booked here. The staff are neither professional, not friendly, by Thai standards. Yes, this hotel is about a 15 minute walk to the beach, but there is no beach to speak off. It is about 300 meters of sand walled in by deck chairs and umbrellas that go right up to the water's edge. It is extremely crowded and one is obliged to walk the gauntlet of restaurant touts that illegally occupy the beach. This is the biggest booking mistake I have ever made in my life and for someone that is used to decent hotels in Thailand, this has been a major disappointment. Worse yet is the general location. There are almost no Thai restaurants in the vicinity. If I wanted Burger King, McD, German or Italian food, I would stay home. In simple terms, if one is looking for a Thai vacation experience in reasonable proximity to a decent beach, the Wannara Hotel and its unhelpful staff is not for you.

Room tip: Do not accept a room on the ground floor. No privacy.

Reception: Extremely friendly and helpful!

Cleaning Staff: Very competent.

Breakfast Buffet: Loads of good food!!

Location: As good as you can get unless you pay 5 times the price to stay ON the beach!

Room: The TV is a "little" small. (I'm being nice.) Otherwise, no complaints.

Room tip: The higher the floor the room is on, the better the breeze on the balcony. Higher is better here. Balconies are HUGE!
