Review of Siam City Hotel
1.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Sep 5, 2012
My overnight stay in Hat Yai was just for the convenience of splitting up a big trip between Penang (Malaysia) and Krabi (Thailand). Well, I wished I just stayed in the cramped minibus for a couple of hours longer instead of staying in Hat Yai. Not only is the hotel a total disaster, the city is just nothing more then a collection of grey and ugly buildings, with little or none green areas. Where to start about Siam City Hotel. To begin with, the reception staff. In the beginning I actually had a really good feeling about them, especially an older man who was smiling a lot and very modest and friendly. The ladies on the other hand already made a bad impression by looking at me an giggling in Thai. Once I was checked in I went up to my room, and the first thing the 'elevator attendant' asked me if I wanted a 'girl'. This, for me, was just unacceptable. I had the question some other times while walking the streets, but this was different. As a hotel employee you are not supposed to ask these questions. Then, I came to the room. The lobby already seemed a bit out of date, but the room was just completely worn down and dark. Most of the things were working though, but switches were yellow and dirty. I may once have been a fancy hotel, but it's on the edge of needing a complete renovation. If you're into old and worn down things, this hotel is for you. I was glad I could leave the next day, after a disgusting breakfast (which you have to pay for!) I asked the reception lady for the price of a minivan to Krabi. Since I didn't take any minibus yet in Thailand, I agreed with the price of 800 baht. It was only when I left they totally ripped me of. I shouldn't have paid more then 400 baht, so the lady is probably still laughing with the 400 baht she could spent because of me. Never stay here, just never stay in Hat Yai at all, it's a complete dump.

The hotel is old, the buttons in the elevator are falling out, the rooms are aged and worn out. The bathrooms are a bit scary, toilets barely flush, tub is well stained. That being said, the tv works, the airconditioning works, the room was fairly clean. Mini bar was not fully stocked after the last guest, but a quick word with front desk took care of that.

Upon checking in, room was not ready, we were told the lobby has free wifi, and so we waited there. When the room was ready, one of the staff alerted us, and off we went. (out bags were transported to the room ahead of time)

The mattress seems to have a foam top, or something like that, and yes it is super soft. The bed sheet was a bit small, and left the bottom third of the mattress uncovered.

There were a bunch of small issues, but most memorable was the check out, and the staff inquiring about our next destination, and taking care to ask if we knew how to get there, and wishing us a great trip. I give it a very good based on the staff, however would call it average at best based on the room itself.

One would think if you managed a hospitality property that accepted guest from all ove the world, you would surely hire someone who spoke even a little of the English language. Not so at the Siam Central Hotel, Hatyai, Thailand. I think this is the largest problem with this hotel, no one can understand your wants, needs or desires.Reasonably priced and centrally located in this large city, but not a lot to see and do except eat and shop.

Room tip: Not a bad place

The one thing I will remember about this place is that it had the softest mattress I've ever laid on. The thing practically swallows you. Judging by the room furniture, you can tell this place has been around since at least the early 80s and hasn't been renovated. The curved windows were pretty cool. Quite a few hotels in Hat Yai offer tons of English news channels but the only English channel was Fox Crime. Bathroom was awful. No free Internet which unfortunately is typical of hotels this size all over the world. Located very close to the train station and Lee Gardens. The good outweighs the bad here and overall I'd recommend it to most people if they get a good deal.

Location very central of Kim yong market . Walking distance to lee garden main bazaar . Service was ok. Good value for money. Easy to locate the hotel therefore save money to travel on tuk tuk. Bed was comfortable and room was not too small for two adult and two children. I will for sure return to this hotel if I come to hat yai again

All the hotels in the city centre of Hat yai was fully booked as it was the last weekend of the June school holidays.

We did not was to pay USD170 for a suite at the Novotel next door and had no choice but to book our 3 rooms at this 2* hotel. Not to mention that it was the last 3 rooms available on Booking.com

Hotel has no free wifi. We were offered 5hrs of wifi for 100baht by coupon.

Hotel is old but quite clean. Bath tub was old and corroding. Towels looked old and had stains.

SGD34.00 a night. Cannot complain too much. If it were SGD50.00. My complain will be harsher.

Will I stay here again? Only if there are no rooms in the other hotels nearby the city centre.
