“Filthiest place in the south of Thailand”

The staff are ok (ish), but the rooms are truly gross, the place is suffering from a severe case of total neglect, long ago broken shower heads, stinky pillows full of of solidified lumps of human sweat\grease, decrepid room furniture, and walls that desperately need painting totally depressing place to wake up in. There always seems to be a steady flow of creepy types through here as it's the cheapest in the area that'll let anybody stay if they pay. The internet is not free, actually quite expensive; you buy coupons at the counter. Find somewhere else, loads of small hotels in this area for not much more money.

Room Tip: Rooms in any other hotel are cleaner.

I didn't stay here but walked in to ask if they had rooms available when I was on an overland trip to Malaysia. As soon as I stepped in there was this guy (not Thai, a westerner) with blood injected eyes telling me they're full and then asking all sort of personal questions. There was a Thai girl behind the reception desk talking on the phone, I ignored the crazy weirdo and asked her if they had any rooms. She didn't seem to know and had to phone the manager (what the hell, you either have a room or you don't!). I left and found a better place to stay behind the city walls and close to the night market.

This place is really disgusting. The walls and bathroom are completely filthy. The floors are uneven and it really looks like its falling apart. They give you a very light blanket, but mine was full of holes, and I didn't use the cheap towel they provided because the shower was so disgusting. The guy working didn't really speak English and smoked cigerettes during the check-in process. I booked on booking.com, but the hotel told them I never showed up so they charged me the full price again for no-show, even though I was there and paid in cash! I stayed here because I was completely out of money and it is the cheapest thing in town, but if you have more than $10 to your name, stay somewhere else.

I have lived in Hatyai on three occassions while working as an English teacher and my last trip to Thailand I stayed at the Cathay Guest House for nearly two and a half years until August 2013 because it was close to my school. The hole in the ground type toilets were previously normal everywhere in Asia so they don't worry me, although the plumbing is dodgy. The rooms are basic but if staying for a long time the staff will try to give you one of the better rooms away from the main road, and you also get a discount if staying for ten days. The staff are very friendly especially Porn and Fon who work in reception, and Nui who is the cleaner. Food is good value and the reception area is a good place to socialise with backpackers, beer also being cheaper than in most bars. There is a reliable travel agency on the ground floor selling tickets to Malaysia and many places in Thailand, also with friendly staff who have worked there for years and speak English. It is close to the train station for trains to Bangkok and Malaysia and also only 50 metres from a popular Aussie bar called the Hive, run by Mat and Vaughan and their Thai wives. There is also a very nice tiny restaurant in the alleyway directly opposite the Tune Hotel which serves cheap Isan food, called Ran Aharn Kuan Kao, (or Ali Ba Ba Bar, by some farangs.) It is owned by a friendly Thai man named Sak and most dishes are 30 baht. The menu on the wall is only in Thai but recommended is somtam with egg, radnaa, and Kao phat neua. The Cathay Guest House can arrange border runs in vintage Mercedes which are parked outside, and also minibuses to Penang. There are computers for guests use in reception area 30 baht per hour or 100 baht per day. If you want to go out late at night ask for a swipe key card for 200 baht returnable deposit as this is good for security. There are markets and shopping centres very close by including Sizzlers, MacDonalds and several 7 elevens if you want a change from Thai food. If you want muslim food there is the Maliam Restaurant just around the corner and another opposite the Hive Bar. Chinese Dimsum is also available in Niphat Uthit 3 road. (Turn right outside Cathay, take first left, go to the end and cross the road and it is 20 metres to the right.) There is a trolley of food outside and you choose what you want, it is put in bamboo baskets and cooked for you, about 14 baht per basket. If you want European food then Post Laser and the Swan are popular pubs in Thammoonwitty Road, just turn left and then first right outside Cathay and walk 2 blocks along.

Room Tip: Go for a room on the left of the main corridor, the ones near the road are very noisy because window...

Imagine 'The Beach', the backpacking movie starring Leonardo de Caprio. Imagine the room he was staying at when he was in Bangkok. That summarized this place. That was the first impression that I had when I looked into the rooms.

Overall, it was a very cheap deal. THB 240 for a double fan room, come on, where else can you get such deal?

But it comes with a catch. A squatting toilet in a bathroom which is way too basic. And my room was facing the main road, so expect some noise coming from the vehicles on the road.

Nevertheless, I had a good night sleep whilst on transit to KL and the common area was nice, good spot to meet new people. Good laundry service too. But you have to pay for the Internet. THB 100 for 24 hours.

Am I gonna stay here again? Most probably, if I am under budget and need a quick rest.

Room Tip: Choose a room which is not facing the main road.

Lots of dodgy people hanging around the reception. Very very grubby and run down throughout. The guy at the desk had minimal English and was barely any help. However he was not unfriendly. And the place was not outwardly dirty nor did it have insects that we could see. It felt like you were in a dilapidated prison. We stayed from10pm to 5am which was long enough. Oh and there was a pair of jocks hanging on our bathroom door.

Room Tip: All rooms have an insane asylum feel so good luck.
