I found this place after being stranded in Hat Yai and didn't last more than two hours. Both the fan and the light in my room were broken, and staff refused to fix them. There was a strange stain on my sheets, and I made the mistake to peek inside the pillow cases and glimpse a very dirty pillow who's odor wouldn't go away after that.

The bathroom was pretty dirty, but the rest of the room was bearable. It had a good view of the street, but unfortunately, it also let in plenty of sound. Reliable wireless internet was provided.

Room Tip: There are plenty of other cheap places just a few blocks away that provide more - like AC!

The room was okay for the really cheap price. I had my clothes washed and it seemed okay. Beverages are cheap, and service is decent.

On the downside- the squat toilet looked so gross, and emitted a foul smell that could be smelled from the bed. That was my strongest memory of the place, and that is still what I associate it with.

There is a nearby guesthouse called
Louis Guesthouse that has better bathrooms with western toilets. The rooms also look and smell better, but costs 500 baht as of February 2011.

This guesthouse is known because it is featured on several travel books. My friend who works for Rough Guide even visited here and featured it. I was stuck in Hat Yai for a night and found this cheap place. There's no available single bed room so I got the twin bed room for 200Baht. It is with fan, attached with a bathroom with a squat toilet which I'm uncomfortable to use and old shower and sink. The bed was pretty okay. The sheets are clean, pillow cases too. There are clean towels provided. But I do find a bedbug in the middle of the night which is one thing scares me off and keep me from having a good sleep. The good thing about this guesthouse is that it is in the central part of Hat Yai. You can go to shopping malls, night markets, hawker stalls, beer pubs, travel agents, train station by walking. They have a curfew though at 1AM until 6AM they are closed. But you can ask for the extra key from the receptionist who is well versed in English and very helpful if you will come back late or go out early. They sell drinks, meals and have internet accessible computers in their receiving area. For the price and location, this is definitely a good deal. Anyways you are most probably staying for a night in Hat Yai for transit to go some other parts of Thailand and Malaysia so this won't hurt much. Just don't expect a 5-star grand hotel services for 160-250Baht price range.

Room Tip: You can check the rooms prior to getting them. See it for yourself first.

Let's be honest there's nothing to do in hat yai. You'll be there for 1 night max waiting for transport connections.
The place is 2 blocks from the train station with daily trains to Bangkok or Malaysia.
Room very basic but sheets and towels clean. Bathroom has the dreaded squat toilet but get over it, you're travelling through Asia.
Staff friendly and drinks cheaper than 7-eleven. 250baht for a triple for 1 night. Not the Hilton but there are far worse places

Cathay Guest house in Hat Yai

I have been travelling for years and I have experienced the most various accommodations in Asia and South America specially. But here I have to make a pause and to write a post about this place The Cathay GH recommended by Lonely Planet.

This place is against the human dignity.

All the rooms smell urine. (I have checked most of them)
I imagine that the Cathay GH clean their rooms once a week or may be once a month. They don’t change the sheet.

My advice: Don’t touch the curtains or you will need to wash your hands for hours. Don’t open the window same story. The walls are filthy. Me, I am travelling with my own sheets, pillow and for Cathay GH I had to walk in the room with sandal.
I have stayed in 2 rooms. In one room the shower was leaking strongly. In the other room the shower was just a pipe (room 316). A blue plastic pipe with nothing at the end.
But the worse is the smell. The urine. In some rooms they put chemicals product to cover the urine. At the end of the day your stuff stinks.
Some comment from travellers say: “scary dump”, “Not good value”, “I don't think I will ever return - the wall of my room was filthy, and the bed sheet did not seem to have been changed. Air circulation was also quite bad” others travellers from Cambodia and Malaysia said “it’s cheap I will come back”.

My answer to this people, the last one, is: Are you happy to be treated as an animal because you pay only 200 baht?

Is this really happened!

We paid only RM8 each for a triple room =) Amazingly cheap yet clean and spacious. If you're looking for a budget guest house, this is a really nice place. I always see them mopping the floor and the employees are really really helpful and friendly!!!!
The bathroom looks a lil bit rundown but clean (although we found cockroach on the 2nd night but it was alright for us cos we kept reminding ourselves RM8)
It's a lil bit warm in the room, no AC but it was alright cos the fan speed is adjustable (note: in Thai 1 means fastest, 4 means slowest) the switch for the light was also at the opposite direction =P
Location is good too, walking distance to shopping malls and markets.
Try the breakfast place opposite the Guest house (Pak Tai Coffee Shop) we found it coincidentally =) the Pak Tai is really good!!
If you happen to be around during the weekend, be sure to visit the Floating Market and there's this awesome massage place which cost only 200 Baht for 2hours. Ask the reception for the location.
WARNING do not take the tour from the downstairs travel, walk around and you will find a better deal.
