“Not much like a Novotel”
Reviewed April 15, 2012

My wife and I stayed at the Novotel (now Centara) Hat Yai during December 2011. It looked like to be th ebest option in Hat Yai but this doesn't mean much in Hat Yai.
We booked a "Club Floor" room but the club is only open for a couple of hours the rest of the day it is closed (?). The room looks tired and not much comfortable. The breakfast was good with a wide variety of food. The staff was friendly and helpful. The location is good asit is direct in the city centre.

This is not a Novotel anymore - Accor have quit their cooperation with Centara in this and other places in Thailand.

Fist impression was the undergound car park which was dark and frightening, but not really unusual in Thailand, luckily our visit was some time before the bombing of the property across the road.
Check in was Ok, but when we got to our room it was flooded by a leaking a/c.
After trekking back down in the slow lifts to the reception desk the gentleman behind the desk mumbled something of an upgrade as there was nothong else available anymore but what we ended up in was a room that:
did not have the kingsize bed we requested
had just been repainted and smelled like ... I cannot find a suitable expression for that at the moment. Housekeeping brought some kind of an Ozone generator which kept the smell down but my eyes were still tearing next morning
This is a place frequented by tour groups from across the border to Malaysia and also by conventions by Thai companies (as we found next morning at breakfast). It is well past its prime and if this is the best place in Hat Yai, we will desparately try yo avoid Hat Yai in the future.

I stayed in this hotel a couple of times before (quite a number of years ago). I was thus, very impressed upon walking into my corner room to see what an improvement the reno had done to the room. Anyway, let's start from the beginning...

We booked through a local Hadyai Travel Agency which had always given us the best rate and this had not increased much since my earlier bookings years ago - which added on to my jubilation at seeing the improved room, as usually after reno the price jumps too! Anyway, at check-in they initially couldn't find our two rooms reservation. It was discovered that they had our reservation as arriving the day earlier. Anyway, no issue since the hotel wasn't full. However, the manager/supervisor said if I wanted the rooms to be next to each other it would have to be 1 twin and 1 king. There is no inter-connecting room at Centara. I mentioned that I'd prefer both rooms to be king bedded but if no choice then no choice since priority was for proximity of both rooms. He surprised me by handing me keys to two king bedded rooms right next to each other after a few minutes! It was a good start already!

We were given rooms on the 9th floor. 1 was a corner room and it was definitely nicer and roomier than the next room. It also has a two seater sofa while the non corner room only had an arm chair. I really love the new design and colors of the room. Right from the gorgeous patterned carpet to the coloured feature wall behind the bed to the stark and modern bathroom. I'd prefer a walk-in rain shower rather than a bath tub though...
The bed was huge (actually it was two single beds pushed together). Good TV channel selection. Negative points for the room were these items were not provided : Bathrobes, slippers, tea and coffee making facilities. Interesting... Since when I checked out their official website all rooms were meant to be equipted with these items. Another negative point is the very unusual in-room safety deposit box. Pre-historic even! Guests are required to ask for the key from Front Desk but the key despite being the correct one (can turn in the lock) the safe door couldn't be opened. When I told the Front Desk they offerred their safety deposit box. So obviously, this is a common problem. Another minor negative point was the large sliding windows were locked up and couldn't be opened. However, these were truly minor issue for me.
Otherwise, I love everything else about the room. Aircond worked very well, very quiet. Now the hotel is apparently fully non-smoking. But I did detect a very slight whift of ciggy smell.

From my reading of previous TA write-ups there are still rooms which had not been renovated. Hopefully all will be done up soon and the maintenance of these nice rooms kept up. Since it would be a pity to renovate so nicely but let the the effort go to waste.

My room rate didn't come with breakfast so I can't comment. Hadyai has so many yummy food anyway! For example, right outside the hotel at the corner (Lee Garden side) there is a lady selling good Tau Fu Fa. I love Thai Tau Fu Fa since it comes in sweet ginger base and crispy mini yau char kwai. Also, the tau fu is scooped thinner and not thick like in Malaysia. She sells in the evening. There are also many other vendors in the evening - Thai dessert, mango sticky rice, deep fried chicken, barbecued cuttlefish, Malay styled Roti Canai and Teh Tarik, noodles, etc. if I go to Hadyai I will only stay here or across at Lee Garden since the location is THE BEST. Central Departmental Store is right below. Another mall across below Lee Garden Hotel, many small shops everywhere, massages... The list goes on and on! Parking facility is good too. We never take the car out once we are there. Just took the Tuk2 everywhere.

Service was very good. Right from the constantly smiling bellmen to reception to housekeeping. My request for the safety deposit box key to be delivered to my room was fulfilled in about 5 minutes. And of cause, what impressed me most re their service was how the manager/superisor found two rooms next to each other for me despite me not really making a fuss over it.
Keep up the good work Centara!

Room Tip: Corner room is bigger and has nicer layout.

Hat Yai is the largest city in the south and caters mainly to crowds from Malaysia. The hotels in town are mostly old though some have been refurbished. That includes this hotel which has recently been taken over by new management. Nevertheless, the design or lay-out of the rooms are no different to others in town or for that matter, hotels of 3 star standard in Thailand. The big difference though is that this hotel is much cleaner and in that respect, I dare say, one of the better ones in town. Stay in most other hotels in this town once and you will consider this hotel to be a 6-star!

So keep your expectations in check, appreciate its location at the heart of the action (as well as being walking distance-ish to and from the train station) and that it even has a buffet selection for breakfast. You could stay elsewhere for less money and for the same level of cleanliness but I wouldn't think it'd be as centrally located as this hotel.

I stayed for 2 days in Hat Yai for a business trip. The hotel is in downtown so it is easy to get food or good for shopping. The hotel has a small pool and a small gym. The room is rather old and rundown. Breakfast is average. There are 2 small elevators to use, and not enough when a big group of tourists from Malaysia arrive.
Overall, it is just okay to stay. probably similar to others nearby.

If this hotel is one of the best hotel in HatYai, i can't imagine how the other hotels are. This is a very standard hotel, a little bit disappointed by Novetel standard. Overall the hotel room is clean, but need to refurbish ASAP. The furniture, the towels are pretty old. i paid for THB2150/night during CNY.
One weird experience, i went down to the swimming pool floor, where the spa center is located. The lady that on duty at the pool side bar told me that the spa center has closed down (it was 11am). But i saw many posters (inside & outside the hotel) advertising the spa.
the location is very strategic, many restaurants & malls around. very convenient. However, the food around this area was not very good and it was very pricey for Thailand's standard. The prices here are higher than in Bangkok.
