“Back to basics”
Reviewed July 10, 2013

We originally booked 5 nights at Naga Hill as it looked so cute from the website. We later changed this to 3 nights due to a change in travel itinerary but left after 2 once we experienced the 'resort'.

For nature lovers this is a great place, although a little over priced. There are definitely some positive things about the resort, the swimming pool is great (huge, deep and with a nice view), the layout is designed so each 'bungalow' is hidden from sight and very private and bungalows are kept clean with a very good mosquito net and decent bed.

However there is major room for improvement. Service is lacking, it is more of a 'self service' environment. Almost every time we came to the restaurant for a drink or meal we had to get the menu ourselves after waiting a good 20 minutes and being the only guests around. The food was good but even with just 2 people dining during the course of the evening, it was not possible for food to come out even close to the same time. It was clear that they would cook one dish and then start from scratch for the next one. One lady who appeared to be the manager spoke very good english however the rest of the staff did not speak or understand a lot. Staff were all very friendly during our stay but they were not attentive and we would often have to go out of our way when we needed something.

Also we found that their website was a little bit misleading. The word bungalow is a bit of a stretch, it was more like a small, very basic hut which could be compared to a camping experience in a large tent. We definitely feel that they should lower their prices as we paid 1,200 THB for a 'medium bungalow' for which we would not pay more than 800 THB for. A man who we assume was the owner openly asked guests to give a 'good review' on trip advisor and made sure to catch us before we left to ask us in a pushy manner to do the same while we struggled with our luggage. we also tried to arrange a driver to take us to look at 3 relatively close sights in Chiang Rai, as the manager lady had seemed so friendly and helpful we thought she would ensure that we got a good deal, however she quoted us almost 3000 THB. After stating that this was very expensive she dropped the price to 1,200 THB but after deciding to take a very friendly meter taxi driver we paid just 800 THB for 4 hours of his services.

Overall nice environment but over priced and with poor service.

Room Tip: only for true nature lovers

We had left all the arrangements for our 2 day trip to Chiang Rai to our guide ,Na, who never disappointed us. After a wonderful day at the Thai/Burma border wandering around the most amazing street markets we'd ever seen , Na drove us to this beautiful little gem, set behind rustic gates and a winding path near a small lake.
The first surprise was our bure, a classic bamboo cabin in a secluded grove of coconut palms.
Inside was our king size mattress set upon a raised sleeping platform with mosquito net overhead. Our bathroom with flushing loo was outside,,semi roofed, and walled with a pretty tree growing in the shower space. There was even a full sized bath!
The walls of our bure were open to the elements, apart from good netting, so be warned , bring a sweater as it is chilly at night. There was no power after a certain time at night, but decent torches were supplied and there was always someone to guide us back to our bure after dinner
We had a beautifully prepared and presented meal in the outdoor restaurant that night and next morning a continental breakfast was included in the price.
This is an "Eco " Resort , so don't expect 5 *s. We loved it.

We spend 1 week in 2011 and the service was excellent on every point (room, food and tours), the place was under a french management. We came back this year and were very disappointed, food was BAD, staff unfriendly and nobody could offer us an interesting excursion !

We did not expect much of this place (reading the previous reviewes). Our stay here was quite short (4nights in total) due to other places we wanted to visit. Staff is friendly, if you are friendly. Food is good, although a bit expensive in comparison for how much you can each in the Chiang Rai. But word expensive applies only for thai prices, comparing prices to Europe or US this is still affordable, safe and natural place!
We were the only 2 foreigners in the hotel due to a local wedding - and this was very unique experience. We were invited to the event, which is unforgetable. Our concerns about partying wedding guests were false, and seems the guests were more concerned about not disturbing us.
Accomodation is very simple, almost like sleeping in the tent. Outdoor bathrooms are separated from the nature with a simple brick-wall, you feel the nature from the rest (bugs, birds, etc). Well none of these were going after us :-)
Airco is missing, but why if the nights are chilly and you are happy having a warm blanket?
If you look for safe, check first the wooden box under the bed - which you think is the stair to get up :-)
Do not bring/store any food here if you do not want to figt with ants for it!

Make yourself ready for the nature and you will enjoy it as we did.

The "resort" is remote and signs are not very good, you have to have quite good sense of directions to find this place (even taxi drivers do not know where it is). The best is to print the simple map (drawing) they have on the Naga hill web page. Forget about any other maps, they won't bring you there!
The best is to rent a car (we did it at the airport) to see the neighbourhood by yourself and not to be dependant on organized tours or taxis. Driving in this area is simple, safe and police is friendly and helping with directions (if they know :-)

Room Tip: they are no rooms, just "cottages" from wood and grass :-)

This was our first stop on our tour through Thialand and Laos. We arrived quite late and the manager was very welcoming and sat us down in the bar and got us a drink. He told us to go with a member of staff to our lodge, drop off the suit cases and come back for dinner. We were only about 15minutes and when we got back he said the restaurant was closed as the staff are going home. We told him we had had a long trip with nothing to eat so he managed to persuade some body to cook us Kao Pad (a rice dish). The staff obviously did not like this manager as they did not want to do it.
We only stayed here one night. You have to like nature and a countryside location to stay here. Nice wooden houses set amidst a beautiful landscaped and well maintained gardens with a back to nature outside hot shower (private) . Dont expect air conditioning as the lodges are made of local bamboo and timber, but there is a ceiling fan. Nice swimming pool next to the restaurant. The breakfast was very good and a very friendly taxi driver took us to the bus station and even put us on the right bus (he could hardly speak any English and we could not speak any Thai)
All in all we would stay here again if we were in this area.

The Hotel Management has changed. There was no warm welcome no warm goodbye. Bad food. No wine no cookies like before. But the food was more expensive. A lot of food were out of season. The service is really bad.
Its such a nice place but the bad service doesn't make it attractive anymore. Also it is difficult to find.

My girlfriend and I came to Naga Hill for the fith time. We had decided on ending our roundtrip there since we knew that the srvice was excellent, the food fantastic, the drinks and coffee delicious, the pool clean, fresh, salty and deep. the view spectacular etc. you get my drift. However we were gravely disappointed. On our first day we found out that the former manager had been replaced and a knew manager had taken his place, we did not give this much thought, as the owners remained the same and we expected they would continue in the same manner as the previous six years. We were gravely mistaken.

In short we came to Naga Hill for the FOOD, the WINE, the DRINKS, the COFFEE, the POOL and the ambience.

FOOD: On our first day there we discovered that the menu card had been drasticly reduced. The Naga HIll kitchen is characterized by being a french thai fusion, however all the dishes with French elements and all western dishes were unavailable, some were crossed of the menu card and listed as out of season, how can apple crumple be out of season???? While others were listed as available, but to our disapoinment, again were unavailable. The dishes that were available were thus mainly thai dishes, not a problem, we love thai food. However, since the cook had also resigned the dishes were not at all up to standard, I must say, some of the dishes were okay, while others were runny and tasteless.

WINE: When we thought we would have to make due with the excellent wine, we were once again deeply disappointed. There was no wine menu as usual and they only had one wine a south african house wine, that my girlfriend tried by the glass, that had been aerated for too long and was going sour.

DRINKS: Since the head waiter had just come back after resigning and going jobhunting down south we were able to get cocktails and good ones, which was nice. But cocktails is not really a substitute for wine, if you don't wan't to be senseless drunk anyway.

COFFEE: At the time we ordered coffee our head waiter was not on the job and we had to settle with the knew manager. My girlfriend ordered coffee and after 45 minutes went to check on the staffs progress. They had had problems cleaning the coffee machine and figuring out how it worked, so they had had to call for an employee who was not on the grounds. Furthermore it was not possible to get the homemade cookies Naga Hill has offered on other occasions. It is not to sound spoiled, but I think the disappointment was so profound that even lack of the small things that one could do without, such as cookies, which normally gave Naga Hill it's excellency, bothered us. We had simply been looking so much forward to these last days of papering, cosiness, great food, wine, coffee, cake and utter relaxation.

POOL: On our first day we told the manager that the pool was dirty, there was a great amount of sand on the bottom and you were not able to see anything under water, we found a dead frog in the water that had been there for quite sometime, we could tell since it was dissolving. Since we have visited Naga hill five times before we knew that this was the opposite of normal, however she tried to explain the pools dirty water by referring to the rainy season, which we know not to be true. On our last day, we had planned to spend the day by the pool, even though it was somewhat nasty. However when we came out to lay by it it was completely green. This was around 10 am. We contacted the staff three times before anything happened, and at around twelve the manager came. She told us that since it had been raining a lot last night the pumps in the pool had switched off, she explained that she would turn them on and the pool would return to it's "normal" colour within two hours. Three hours later the pool was still green, we did not feel like dipping ourselves in it, since we thought that the water could only turn green without the pumps due to great amounts of bacteria. So we lay baking in the sun (it was very hot when we visited). The water would of course not clear up and the water was not changed. Furthermore the pump set out several times during the day but nobody came to check on it, we had to fetch the manager every time.

Needless to say the next day when we wanted to check out we wanted a discount, since what was promised on the webpage was definitely not delivered. We were given a 10 % discount on our three day stay, and a line from the manager that it was not her fault. My girlfriend who has long been in the restaurant business begged to disagree. There was no attentiveness to the pool, the food was inconsistent, and a much poorer qaulity than the previous years, and the basic coffee making skills were lacking.

Needless to say we will never visit again. But I hope that this review might prompt the owners to acces the deterioation of their former fantastic, romantic, delicious, friendly, warm bungalow resort. Because we would be very disapointed if Naga Hill could not get back on it's feet.

So Vincent, hurry up and rehire Christopher!!!!!
