Visited Chiang Rai, Happynest Hostel as our third destination as part of our backpacking trip across Asia in August 2016

Location: About 7-10 minutes walking distance from the center of Chiang Rai where the markets and bus stations are based in a quite area which suits the hostel theme as it was in a relaxed area and the hostel itself gave off a stress-free vibe. It is also about 15 minute walk to the Golden clock tower based at the roundabout which is surrounded by plenty of cafes and restaurants (I recommend there local specialty of spicy sausages).

Building & Room Type: We opted for a 6 bedroom mixed dorm which was spacious enough for everyone to keep their belongings in or around there bed as well as pad locked lockers to keep valuables. The rooms where provided with AC & a single fan which was useful as there was minimal natural light coming into the room due to the lack of windows. Although outside the rooms they had a nice relaxed lounge area on the upper floors which provided bean bags, reading materials and a TV to share among other dorms. Upon entering the facility you are welcomed to this open space of a Zen type feeling due to the front of the building being protected by glass allowing sunlight to shine through. The building had consistent front desk team during the day and security at night. There were 3 different areas where you could relax and socialise (Reception & 2 on the middle floor), they also had computers which are free to use especially useful as you are on the border of Laos so may need to print some documents.

Other Facilities: Kitchen & laundry room are also accessible for everyone on site.

Staff: We never communicated with staff too much as everything is quite local to the hostel so it was easy to configure our way around as well as plan what we wanted to do. Check in was fast and easy process and we were also shown to our room as well. Although they were quite helpful when it came to getting into Laos as they helped us understand how to cross borders via local transport and gave us information on how not to get scammed.

Overall: A great stay especially when looking for a more relaxed hostel rather than a party hostel. The city is generally a stopover for other locations or access into Laos so you will meet like minded individuals who will be taking the same route as you.

Room tip: Visit the white temple is a must do! So different from other temples you will visit. Take local buses as it is drastically cheaper.

Great breakfast - it was nice to have a proper cooked breakfast. Glad we chose a room with ensuite. Room was very large and spacious. Staff were very helpful and offered to call us a taxi, let us store our bags after check out, and gave us good advice for public transport. We were only here for a night but the common areas looked comfortable to spend time. Hostel was in a good location, easy to walk into the main restaurant area of town, night market, and bus station. A little more effort if it is bad weather but taxis are cheap.

No wifi in the room, I believe this was available in the public areas but we were only there for a night so didn't try it elsewhere. We couldn't work out if one of our bedside lights didn't work or if we just struggled to find the switch?! No extraction fan in the bathroom but there was a little window out to where the sink was which meant the shower didn't get too steamy.

Room tip: Private rooms are on the top floor away from the road but require walking up a few flights of stairs

Pretty pretty place that provide nice photos opportunities at common areas which are also comfy for rest and some nice talk. Clean bed and shower and washroom areas. Within walking distance from night bazaar.

Personally I am not so crazy about their breakfast but you can always go out and find something else to eat.

There are a few lizards that always stick on the walls, which is of course, it is Thailand. But it's ok even for someone super afraid of lizards like myself because they do not seem to go to rooms/bathrooms.

Located only 5-10 minute walking to the town, modern and nice design, lovely breakfast set. The service in overall was good, Khun Am (sorry I don't know how to spell) was very helpful and friendly, however the guy did check-in for us was not really good, feel lazy.

Can't connect wifi during the stay as the signal was too weak.

This hostel is very convenient only a 5-10 minute walk to the main town / night market. I had a really comfortable stay here, the beds were comfy & large lockers are provided in the room for valuables. I love the decor of the place. Very fast wifi, I had some freelance work so this was very handy & I enjoyed sitting in the common room with the large open doors. Washing machine is available for 40baht per wash & can dry laundry on the rooftop. Would recommend!
